Thanks for pointing that out. I already have a USB for the Dosdude Catalina Patcher inserted to be able to run the post install patches.
It is an unpatched ROM, all nondestructive so far.
Once I've created a USB with USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3.app, how does it figure into the above update sequence?
Boot it, then boot into Catalina and install the updates as described. It uses OpenCore to emulate nativ APFS support what the software update is expecting to see.

I do not use this, so you depend on others to support your little experiment.

Thanks for that.

Although appearing promising as I booted through USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3bs, to the main EFI, or the Hard drive, install process still seems to give up & reboot at about 10% when installing the security update.

Unless anyone can chime in with any other suggestions about what I'm doing wrong, I'm probably going to cave in & give OpenCore Big Sur another go (for the sake of security updates), but Dosdude Catalina was working so well on this 5,1 macbook....

I am very sympathetic with you for the dosdude1 Catalina update issue. It took me six months to finally understand the process. Like you, I went to OCLP Big Sur first because I just couldn't get the Catalina update going. But dosdude1 Catalina is a far better OS for your Mac.
My understanding is that your Mac needs USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3 app. The trick is to select the USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3 at step-9 first, and select macOS install (or something equivalent) for installing the update. This will let you go further by showing an update window after around 12 min. But the update may seem to be stuck at 2/3 mark with a spinning cog slowing grinding to a halt at the end of the update process. You then long press the power button to turn off your Mac, then continue from step-9...

Many thanks to ps866mker for his help. I did the following.
date 010112002019
then I prepared the USB stick with dosdude1 High Sierra patcher which worked now without problem, then booted from the stick and did:
diskutil list
diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ DiskName /dev/DiskNodeID
Then installed High Sierra, stopped with command Q. Checked that the laptop started. Sent it off.
I have the same problem. Mine is a Macbook pro 15" 2011 with DosDude Catalina. After then, is not possible install another MacOs version different os DosDude Catalina. I would like to install High Sierra again, and I have tried ALL type of methods and nothing, always no luck, no finish installation process, always stuck nearly the end of process.
I will be very glad if you explain me better how you did It. I dont understand well the part where you say: "..stopped with command Q. Checked that the laptop started. Sent it off.".
Thanks!

Take a look here

The Recovery option might not work if you have an very old Catalina installation, but Internet Recovery or using an native unpatched USB installer for High Sierra has to work. Have done this numerous times with 2009-2011 iMacs here.

If all these (supported) installation methods/attempts continue to fail you might face a hardware problem.

Edit: Use an USB installer, perform a PRAM reset on boot, press alt/option to boot the USB, wipe the internal disk using the disk utility bundled within the installer, install!

Hey! I have a Late 2010 Macbook Air with 4GB ram and a Geforce 320M and a 1,86GHz Core 2 Duo and I installed Catalina but it runs extremely slow is my macbook to low spec for it or is there a chance i can fix it?

I'm not 100% sure. Most probably 19H1
I've a 5,3 mid 2009 MBP running the dosdude1 Catalina patch 10.15.2. Wanting to update to the last version of 10.15.7, I've re-watched his original installation video as per home page. Really, just wanted to make sure that this update, I should follow, as I originally did upgrading from ElCapitan?

Also needing to confirm that I can skip the step to reformat/ erase the main drive (that 10.15.2 resides on as the main drive) with Disk Utility, as this drive is already previously been converted to APFS already. I'm assuming further that 10.15.7 will effectively just be installed on top of the current set up and my data on this disc will remain (all going well) intact?
@treee111 ^^^Post of mine from another thread. So you've gone from 10.15.7 to the current beta then? Could you let me know if the above will work as I'm thinking it will or did you erase + format again to APFS for your latest version.

Many Thanks TigerA for that additional info for installing on a non APFS native machine. That totally worked and I am now updated to (19H1824).

It might be a minor niggle but I'm now getting a persistant warning on startup that "apfshelperd" cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.

I'm happy to click cancel and carry on but other users of this machine might get worried about it. Can I do anything about it? Clicking move to bin doesn't work & it seems to be part of DosDudes install.

Hello everyone, a few days ago I installed MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 (19H2) on my Macbook pro 7,1 (13 inch mid 2010) thanks to the Dosdude1 patch (version 1.4.4). The system runs very well and I was able to extend the life of my laptop! I used to use Mojave always thanks to the great work of Dosdude1 and it worked quite well (only incompatibility with the scanner of my Samsung C480). With Catalina, however, PDF scanning still does not work with the C480, but in image format it works and prints correctly. I am having trouble getting third party applications like Coconut battery, Burn and Teamviewer to work! The applications are installed regularly, but when I try to open them I get an "unexpected close" error, ignore or report? Yesterday starting the application while holding down the CTRL key, it started regularly today it no longer works! Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help!

Dosdude1 suggests to immediately restart the app after crashing. Works for me.

But you can also do the following for each app that acts up:
sudo xattr -lr /Applications/coconutBattery.app
Enter your password.
Then copy and paste this command:
sudo xattr -cr /Applications/coconutBattery.app
Finally copy and paste this command:
sudo codesign -f -s - /Applications/coconutBattery.app

Thanks for your reply! i preferred to go back to mojave, it's more responsive on my macbook pro than catalina. Maybe in the future when Mojave becomes obsolete and with no compatible applications I will go back to Catalina (hoping Dosdude will release updates for his patch). One question, the command you suggested can also be used for Teamviewer 15.x because even on Mojave it installs but does not start, generating the same error! Thanks in advance for your invaluable help!

Nothing, I tried to follow your advice also on Mojave and unfortunately it doesn't work with TeamViewer 15.29.4. The previous version of the application works without changes or mod (app version 14.7.48671).

You'll have to replace the name, of course. And repeat this routine after system updates. Speaking of which: Mojave hasn't had security updates since July last year. Catalina is near the end of support. Don't expect any updates from Dosdude1.

Two more things: I'm quite sure, that the problem with apps like Chrome or Coconut was Catalina patcher only. So if your problem persists, it could be something else. Actually I don't recall TeamViewer was affected. Maybe you ought to post a Console log file.

Few days ago I upgraded from 10.15.2 to 10.15.7. 3rd party apps suddenly terminated with 'Namespace CODESIGNING Code 0x1' error. I panicked a bit as 1Password6 opened in Mini format but crashed trying to open the actual program. Whilst probably not a permanent fix, I found it interesting that temporarily disconnecting from the internet, allowed them to open. They since open online still, except for the Office16 Suite, that requires this offline start up now and then.

Hello and thanks for your answers. I would like to install a newer and Apple supported operating system, but I know the limitations of my 2010 model macbook pro, already having Mojave running is a great achievement for me! I don't know if I will be able to install more recent systems than Catalina in the future, like Bigsur or Monterey (I think not)… I think in the future, I will either switch machines or switch to Linux.

As you can see, we're still using machines from 2008-2011 - just to have a computer where you need it. Of course my quad core MBP is faster than the 2010 MPB6,2, but I don't think there's much difference in speed between Catalina, Big Sur and Monterey (I've never seriously tested that though). A year ago there were quite a few restrictions for non-metal machines with OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Many issues have been solved. Some will persist - e. g. current versions of Maps, iMovie, Keynote and Microsoft Word won't work properly. You need older versions.

Hello and thanks for your answers. Mojave works excellently! I will try once again to install Catalina on an external drive. I tried Monterey 12.4 with opencore, but at the end of the installation it restarts in a "loop" ... I think having Catalina running is the best I can get for my Macbook pro 7.1 (honestly I'm already satisfied with Mojave).

Code:
Macmini5,3 [Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)]

}

Seems to work. This is a dosdude1 system.
I guess I'll need to learn some OCLP stuff during the summer, as Catalina is said to go EOL.
