Finally I've find an issue on iMac 2011=) Airplay screen mirroring not working at all on iMac (it works in Catalina before), but its works on MBP mid 2012... Please someone advise who had the same issue and already find a solution to fix this. Thanks!

Also if some one has a problem with Universal Clipboard (not working) - you just need to add a second computer (make a connection with it) in the bluetooth section of setting (awesome feature=).

Alright, guys. Here's the scoop. I've been working a lot on patching metal lately, as BenSova created a GUI patcher that works quite well, and I've realized something. There seem to be some modifications that forcefully reboot the Big Sur install USB into a generic Big Sur internet recovery now (so I guess apple made a Big Sur internet recovery). This might be a big problem, as it seems that most of my modifications trigger a reboot into internet recovery, including patching applications to the USB. I don't know how you got it done, jackluke, but nothing is working for me. I also once had this weird thing where two apple logos showed up next to each other with two loading bars. Didn't happen again. If it happens, I'll make sure to take a video. For now, Big Sur is getting more and more frustrating to patch, as Apple is closing our boundary of patching slowly, but rest assured, we WILL patch metal on pre-2012 Macs. It WILL happen. You can count on us.

Hello all
Smooth install on cMP 5,1 with Big Sur 11.0.1 RC2 and Barry K nathan's Micro patcher v0.5.0.

Does anyone know if Barry K Nathan's micro patcher can install other legacy PCIe hardware Kext in a Mac Pro 5,1 besides USB and WiFi?

I think its a legit question to ask if dosdude will provide a patcher like for 10.13-15
I saw nothing of him lately and I would prefer to use his patcher, because I had good results with my MacPro 3.1

If dosdude will not provide a patcher for Big Sur, is there a patcher which is as easy as dosdude´s ?
Who did successfully update his macPro 3.1 with Big Sur ?

Thanks guys !

Read the docs on the page where you got the patcher from. You can do it yourself.

Read post #1 for patching options and search the thread for Mac Pro success stories - there are some.

I think I'm going to give Nathan's patcher a try again. I have a Mac Pro 5,1 (2012) with upgraded WiFi/Bluetooth card plus an upgraded video (Metal) card. First I'm going to clone my existing Catalina SSD onto another blank SSD and use that SSD to upgrade to Big Sur. I'll be doing this when Apple releases the 11.2 or equivalent (10.16.2?) However I do have two types of Macs that can upgrade to Big Sur natively. On one Mac, it is a MacBook Pro 2015 and I have a SSD for it using Catalina (I use it for the Zoom application and don't trust Zoom to spy on my other applications and data). I'll be trying it there first.

Yes, I greatly love the simplicity of Dosdude1's installation system. I think he moved on. By now, I think he is in his fourth year of college and the fourth year can be very taxing. Last month I send some money to him to help him out with his outside life. I wish him well.

I think Nathan took over the mantle from Dosdude1. I'm just going day to day. Yes, I have a limited knowledge of Terminal commands but I'm willing to learn. I love it when instructions are very detailed so I don't ask dumb questions and irate others in here. I just hope Nathan and others can go slow for me. But I see a lot of members here are far above me.

All in here, just stay healthy.

It may be useful to list known hardware compatibility issues in the first post. It may also not be a good idea to install Big Sur on unsupported Macs. Beginning with 11.0.1 officially supported Macs require a firmware update to run Big Sur. It isn't known what changes Apple has made to these Macs to make them ready for 11.0.1.

I'll also add that the answer provided for the first Q&A question may be false or misleading, and hypothesizing Apple's reasons for cutting off support is conjecture. Big Sur officially supports an Ivy Bridge Mac (Late 2013 Mac Pro). When contacted, Intel support stated Ivy Bridge CPUs will continue to receive microcode updates to patch security issues if necessary, which are provided to the OEM (Apple) for distribution. According to Intel, there are no known security holes in Ivy Bridge processors that affect computers running macOS.

It seems there will be new build today in comparison to RC2 (20B28) - it will be 20B29!

Has any one else had issues with Bluetooth? I rarely use it on my Mac, but tonight I tried to get my AirPods to connect. They would connect briefly, but after a second or two, would disconnect. Nothing I could do to make them stay connected. I also tried with a pair of Sony bluetooth earbuds, and had the same problem with them. Other bluetooth devices (my trackpad, for example) seem to work fine.

Running 20b29 on a 2012 Mac mini.

I mean really...Apple, why did you exclude the 2012 Mac Mini from supported Macs, heck, even worse, even the 2012 cMBP which was sold until November 2016 is excluded, a 4 year run only, it runs well on both, I do not see speed penalties on Big Sur...What the heck Apple.
Hello. How did you install Big Sur on Mac Mini 2012 and where can you download the system image?

To those who encountered issues in making my recent BigSur BaseSystem fix with unbootable Installer or "disk full error" or patching errors, you should verify these:

- an internet connection is required because resources are downloaded from my Github, if Github is in maintenance then the script won't work properly

- BaseSystem fix can take up to 10 minutes and fix2 up to 5 minutes to complete

- after fix1 unplug and plug again the USB drive or unmount from DiskUtility the "Install macOS Big Sur" disk , then mount again that disk and continue with fix2

- to make the createinstallmedia installer use at least a 20 GB HFS+ disk partition (this is faster than any USB drive) or use a 32 GB USB drive (in my test also a 16 GB worked)

- check that the output of Basesystem fix and fix2 is as attached pictures (of course Preboot is different diskXs2)

- to check if BaseSystem is properly made you should have on the USB root these files: (some hidden folders), "Install macOS Big Sur.app", Hax3.sh , HaxLib.dylib and a kext folder (don't rename the files inside that folder)

- from terminal type ls -l /Volumes/Install*/BaseSystem/ , you should have a BaseSystembackup.dmg (about 650 MB) and BaseSystem.dmg (that is the patched one, it's size is around 630 MB)

- if you use opencore to boot maybe use this version that includes "Restart and Power off fix" to keep "-no_compat_check" and SIP disabled: USBOpenCoreAPFSloader4b.zip

Now that the final version of Big Sur is about to appear, I wonder if post #1 can be updated with a summary of actions or options one should take depending on the specific Mac model and specific hardware one has. For instance, something like this:
  • All Macs without Metal: Not worth it. Remain as you are [if that is truly the case] or update your GPU to Metal if you can and, when done, follow the relevant instructions
  • Mac Pro 4,1/5,1 without 802.11ac/BT 4.x: Run micropatcher 0.5.0 (or some other process) according to the instructions in http://.... (whatever address)
  • Mac Pro 4,1/5,1 with 802.11ac/BT 4.x: Run micropatcher 0.5.0 (or some other process) according to the [alternative] instructions in http://.... (alternative address) OR Install OpenCore 0.6.3, spoof your computer as an iMacPro 1,1 and install regularly as supported [if that is truly the case]
  • Mac Mini >= x,y: Run micropatcher 0.5.0 (or some other process) according to the instructions in http://.... (third set of instructions)
And similar entries for the various MacBooks, MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros and iMacs. Can a knowledgable person write such a basic summary? I think most forum members with obsolete hardware would appreciate such a summary, instead of having to read more than 200 pages of successful and not so successful experiences with various recipes and iterations thereof.

Hi
I would also like to know when the final version of Big Sur is released today, how will future updates be implemented. will we always have to do a fresh install or upgrade using the micropatcher or other methods

The most common question will be how to download the installer. So let's wait and see until we get this info. I agree that instead of listing the supported machines on top (which are not topic of this thread) we should maintain a table of known successful installations.

But we need for this kind of table the posts of such installation including all necessary additional interventions like plist manipulation for the WiFi etc. unless these get's included in a patcher (we would have to detect the hardware with a finer sieve to do so). Possibly we should add it directly to the first post. I have some experience with information scattered around a long, long thread and new users no able or not willing to follow those links.

My add ons to your list:
  • iMac 12,x with metal enabled GPU without 802.11ac/BT 4.x: Run micropatcher 0.5.0
  • iMac 11,x with metal enabled GPU with or without 802.11ac/BT 4.x:: Run micropatcher 0.5.0, Install OpenCore 0.6.3, use the @khronokernel OC patch provided there
  • iMac 14, 13,x Run micropatcher 0.5.0 (needed to install but does not patch)
I would add such a table or list to post #1...but we should keep into mind that the number of owners of modded Mac Pros and modded iMacs are small compared to the number of sold Mac mini 2012, etc...

Hi guys, Will the official version of Big Sur be released today? I have installed Big Sur Beta 9 on my MacBook Pro 13 Mid 2012, if I wanted to install the official version, what is better to do? A complete and clean installation?

Hi
I would also like to know when the final version of Big Sur is released today, how will future updates be implemented. will we always have to do a fresh install or upgrade using the micropatcher or other methods
As of now:
You would need to reinstall the new complete (patched) installer to install MacOS patch the Big Sur with every upgrade. Since the user data will always stay untouched this is basically close to an OTA upgrade. Welcome in the world of unsupported Macs. This is a message for the first post, too.

Thank you so much for the support.
Ok, I have already made a copy of my current version of the operating system so that if I do something wrong I can then restart.
So to recap. Download the BigSur update
I install the patch
I proceed with the installation on the same disk.
This allows me to be able to update the system without installing completely from scratch.
Correct?
Can I suggest something?
Is it possible to insert whenever a new version of Big Sur comes out to insert the download link in the first post?
I think it is more practical for everyone.
What do you think about it ?

This might be a big problem, as it seems that most of my modifications trigger a reboot into internet recovery, including patching applications to the USB. I don't know how you got it done, jackluke, but nothing is working for me.

I don't encountered this reboot to BigSur recovery, anyway this is easily skippable with alt-option key, or using from BigSur Installer "Startup disk" or even using USBOpenCoreAPFSloader4b (non spoofing) version to show the boot menu with APFS bootable devices.

About patching BigSur BaseSystem, it's an APFS ramdisk with its own Preboot (that changes at each apple update), to allowing booting BaseSystem on non-APFS Legacy USB Mac you need my patched prelinkedkernel from BigSur beta3, then use Barry method to replace Extensions already present on "macOS Base System" with those from a full BigSur installation, but when you want to add and test an app on BigSur Recovery you need to make again the BaseSystem.

You can add custom apps also on the USB Installer root, where from BaseSystem booting the path is /Volumes/"Image Volume"/folder/ , I instead added them to /macOS Base System/Applications/ where the path from ramdisk is /Applications/

Otherwise also adding custom apps editing "Recovery Springboard.app" Utilities.plist is also doable keeping the stock BootKernelExtensions.kc (but this won't work for non-APFS Mac) , to boot without kp you need of course a patched 0xfff boot.efi or an USBOpenCoreAPFSloader4b version that sets 0xfff for csrutil in nvram.

When you say "100% vanilla", do you mean you didn't modify the Big Sur installer in any way or form? Did you simply install it, from Catalina booted using OC, on top of Catalina itself? Have you experienced any issues with sound/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, et cetera? Do you have Night Shift?
