Hmm, even with the supposedly vp9 compatible chrome 86 I'm still not getting HW acceleration there..
There is no VP9 decoding in Safari in any other version than Big Sur.Any love for Safari 14 on Mojave? I can play 4k 60fps videos in Chrome absolutely flawless, but Safari can't even handle 1080p60 videos without tons of freezing and stuttering.
I enabled the WebRTC vp9 codec in the developer menu but still can't even see an option for 4k on Safari 14. 1080p60 still stutters.

The WebRTC option is not for normal playback, it is used for WebRTC applications. Typically like streaming out of tour computer.I enabled the WebRTC vp9 codec in the developer menu but still can't even see an option for 4k on Safari 14. 1080p60 still stutters.
Since last Big Sur update I can’t watch Amazon Prime videos/movies on either Safari app although they play perfectly on Chrome browser. Any suggestions?

You can even watch 8k.I'm seeing music videos for smaller artists even at 5K now, in Safari Big Sur on my 2017 iMac Core i5.

Yes I know, but most of the 8K videos I’ve seen out there are basically videos to demonstrate how great 8K is. The link you provided is a case in point: The fact that it is 8K is emphasized right in the title. You can even watch 8k.
Check if VP9 acceleration is enabled in Safaris developer settings under experimental features. VP9 acceleration has been implemented on the RDNA drivers.
