Trip report for Big Sur Beta 6:
They took it away!
8K vids that played before now back to a maximum of 1080p60. Oh well.
8K vids only playing with avc1 codec. Looks like they yanked VP9 support.
Bah.I can confirm this, VP9 support is gone.

I can still watch this clip in 2160p on my 2017 non-Touch Bar Macbook Pro 13 with Beta 6. Therefore, support is still there for me.Good old costa rica for example:
Could be they want feedback on AMD drivers and thus disabled on Intel.Looks like it only got disabled for Macs that use Quick Sync?! On the Hackintosh with Radeon VII running as iMacPro1,1 it's working as well.
Too much processor usage--> too much heat?Makes no sense. Why would they implement Broadwell and Haswell VP9 acceleration just to disable it again?
I don't have 8k display, not even 4K but can play 8/4k videos.Probably they detect your machine type and disable it because nobody has an 8K display

It is in my signature.Which machine have you got? It’s really confusing to follow this thread without everyone posting a quick spec when they confirm they have a feature enabled.
Edit: I have 8K on one of the videos above but not on all the videos.
Los Lagos is working on the MBP18 on the iGPU but it is very jerky on the Radeon 560X.
Who said it is working in iOS?
8K has been toggled off on Google’s side. Probably they detect your machine type and disable it because nobody has an 8K display and you consume more energy for nothing.
4K HDR YouTube seems a little less efficient than two builds ago. The MBP gets noisy quickly. The video scrubbing and resizing to full screen also becomes jerky for a few seconds before resuming normally.
In general the graphics drivers took a dive in the last two builds. There is a noticeable loss in performance in some games.
How do you explain that startergo still has access to 8K?
Are you referring to all graphics drivers under Big Sur, or just Intel iGPU, or AMD's drivers?
