Trip report for Big Sur Beta 6:

They took it away!

8K vids that played before now back to a maximum of 1080p60. Oh well.

8K vids only playing with avc1 codec. Looks like they yanked VP9 support.

Check again, I think however the support is working it seems to break on youtube every beta for some hours before google updates something to allow it again. I at least still get 4k hdr vp9 support at moment of checking.

I'll wait until tomorrow to do further testing. I just noticed that some Safari settings got reset during the Beta 5 to Beta 6 update. Had to disable content blockers and allow all auto play; as of five minutes ago the same batch of 8K videos that worked before still refuse to play VP9, sticking to AVC1. Do you have a link to one of those that's playing VP9 in 4K?

Good old costa rica for example:

Not sure I like the new safari preferences dialog tabs either, a bit too toned down ( also buggy selection box ), content blocking still working here also, and autoplay setting did not reset.

I guess they have set some hardcoded limits of what is required for playback. So some will have playback and some not.

Looks like it only got disabled for Macs that use Quick Sync?! On the Hackintosh with Radeon VII running as iMacPro1,1 it's working as well.
Could be they want feedback on AMD drivers and thus disabled on Intel.

Nope, heat is reasonable and so is CPU usage. And again, would make no sense. They would know about issues in advance.
Also ot got disabled for more modern Macs as well.

Yeah on my Late 2013 rMBP running Big Sur, it looked like the VP9 decoding was 90-99% offloaded to the Intel Iris 5100 GPU, which was quite surprising.

Looks like Apple doesn't want to throw any possible bones to longtime faithful users- you want hardware accelerated 8K video, buy a 2016 or newer machine, even if it's possible to give it to older ones.

8K has been toggled off on Google’s side. Probably they detect your machine type and disable it because nobody has an 8K display and you consume more energy for nothing.

4K HDR YouTube seems a little less efficient than two builds ago. The MBP gets noisy quickly. The video scrubbing and resizing to full screen also becomes jerky for a few seconds before resuming normally.

In general the graphics drivers took a dive in the last two builds. There is a noticeable loss in performance in some games.

I don't have 8k display, not even 4K but can play 8/4k videos.

Which machine have you got? It’s really confusing to follow this thread without everyone posting a quick spec when they confirm they have a feature enabled.

Edit: I have 8K on one of the videos above but not on all the videos.

Los Lagos is working on the MBP18 on the iGPU but it is very jerky on the Radeon 560X.

It is in my signature.

Who said it is working in iOS?

Signatures on this forum. They don’t appear on Safari for iOS, which is what I’m using to read and post here.

On macOS side, I haven’t logged on to any websites in Safari for Big Sur yet and this forum’s signatures are only visible if we log in to the desktop site. I haven’t imported my keychain into Big Sur at all yet.

How do you explain that startergo still has access to 8K?

I'd be more inclined to believe that they'd disable 8K because it puts a strain on their servers to transmit that much video on a widespread basis over identifying a platform as incapable of that kind of playback.

Are you referring to all graphics drivers under Big Sur, or just Intel iGPU, or AMD's drivers?

I added an ‘edit’ to that post above saying that 8K is working but not on all videos.

For the 8K video (when the option appears) it’s smooth on Coffee Lake iGPU and badly jerky on the Radeon dGPU.

Gaming wise, for each beta I have been testing most of the same benchmarks that Barefeats uses. The last two betas are significantly slower than the first betas on dGPU and eGPU. GFXBench Metal went from 200fps down to 128fps on eGPU.
