Core i7-3770?!???!?!?? Is this a hackintosh, and if so, which GPU?
No that was in Windows on another PC with GTX-1050TI as I said before.
Here is the cMP5,1 Firefox Nightly BigSur (drops like hell):

Same video in Safari (smooth as a butter):
1597453731774.png

Conclusion?
VP9 does not work properly in Firefox yet 8K60FPS.

What mac do you have? didn't you say you had a 2014 one?

I'd be very surprised if Safari software decoder was any better than Firefox one.
Yes, I have. Thats the reason I think there is something else than just pure CPU instructions, and in Safari videotoolbox is called and some functions of the Intel Iris is used which Firefox does not.

Hmmm... I wish I could test more machines, but I can't.

My two more recent machines are 2017 Kaby Lake, and we already know they have full hardware VP9 decode support. My bazillion older machines can't run Big Sur. I have nothing in between. (All of my pre-2017 Macs are from 2010 or earlier.)

Very funny but the same video decodes with VP9 in regular Firefox:

And in Av1 in Firefox nightly:

And of course it does not play well in Nightly. It drops frames like hell.

Edit: Nightly plays that video with Higher resolution as well.

I have seen that in newer uploaded videos 8k is typically only available with AV1, while 4k is in VP9.

I'll leave it up to you guys and gals of course, but I think it could help if going forward we list the CPU and GPU with the video specs when posting results. It's hard to keep track of all the different hardware from the various posters in this thread.

Hmm, I'm not seeing the option to turn on 8K in Safari. Only 4K@60fps. Running the PB of Big Sur on a 2019 MBP 13''.

Some videos will not have the option as they are streamed with AV1. There are videos in this thread you can try which use VP9.

No chance in Safari because it's not hardware supported, you could try Chrome but your CPU is gonna go nuts 😂

I was specifically talking about the videos that have been posted here. None of them have the option of playing in 8K in Safari for me. I'm guessing people here have been using Safari and not Chrome/Firefox to test things out?

Are you on latest Big Sur? Only there you can get it.

It depends on the hardware. On some videos I have the 8k option on my Hackintosh while on the Mid 2014 Retina MacBook Pro i never get any 8k option (which doesn't surprise me, it couldn't play it anyway).

Hm, I find that interesting. If I try to play this
I get the 8k option, and you have much better laptop than me, so should you. What version of Safari do you run? Mine is 16610.1.23.1.3

If you’re using a MacBook Pro you have to disable Automatic graphics switching and use the discrete graphics to get the 8K option in Safari.

I get drop frames like crazy when playing 4k60 with the AMD 5500m dGPU on my 16 inch.

Intel iGPU is better, but still has some drop frames, software encoding on (Edge or Chrome) is totally fine and have no drop frames at all.

Does anyone else experience this?

Here is the video I tested.

Ok, I have to say this since it’s a video about Peru. My grandfather helped build the railroad tracks from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu. He was a friend of the president of Peru and was given the land rights to run the first hotel at Machu Picchu. My dad was born in Machu Picchu, well the town below which had its name changed to Aguas Caliente. My dad would play all day with his brothers in the ruins. Whether it was soccer, tag...whatever. They’d go up and down the ruins to the town below and also run up and down at Huayna Picchu, the ruins at the top of the mountain behind Machu Picchu.

I notice that HDR is once again off on youtube for me, probably due to only hlg working properly before I guess?

Same version of Safari as you (also the latest Public Beta of Big Sur) and these are the only options I see in YT on that video:

Very weird.

Ok, looks like youtube tweaked something overnight.. now getting HDR again in safari, and both HLG and non HLG seem to work now.

Very weird.

8K option no longer available in beta 5 when playing on a MacBook Pro display

The 8K option reappears if you connect a eGPU and external display but decoding performance has dropped badly. 8K is jerky and freezes.
