That is good news!

I accept that every external drive is a big ask! But something like being able to use an icon stored on the drive itself - which gets read as part of the connection process, might work? Manufacturers could put one or more (multiple if they offer different colours, for example) on - and users could add their own and choose a default. Whichever machine they connect to, they'd have the same icon(s) offered.

I've bought disks before that already had custom icons exactly as you described.

They get lost when you format the disk... which I do before doing anything else.

Yes - I agree. But there could be some protocol which retains them despite an otherwise full format. Or a code embedded on the drive which allows them automatically (but optionally) to be downloaded and re-copied to the drive.

I just want the ability for a Mail draft to be sent later, at a scheduled time. Either natively in the Mail app, or in a Shortcut. Is that too much to ask?

(Oh, and maybe the ability to add @mentions, as in Outlook, which I hate otherwise!)

fwiw, you'd lose the icon on the drive if you bought a pc-formatted drive, and reformatted.

many people no longer keep hard drive icons on the desktop. but also, as above... you can paste your own icons over the default (over the years, all my drives have had weird & fun icons). now i never see them (the drives).

EDIT: oops! missed nicho's post above. but either way, reformatting is reformatting; wiping the drive... wipes the drive.

Which was why I suggested an alternative of downloading icons! :) Or the icon could be in a protected bit of storage - even a tiny bit of ROM space! Further, once a drive has ever been attached, your own machine could retain a copy to re-apply if ever the drive is reformatted. And copy back to the drive, if needed. And transfer to other Apple machines you use with the same ID.

And, even if you do not have them on your desktop, the icons appear if you do Get Info.

seems like a lot of work for the drive manufacturers. why not just find some icons (lots of resources online), and use what you like? could be a drive icon, a dog, a face, a... etc. etc. it's been this way forever, no reason to expect that to change. meanwhile, you can do whatever you like.

also, how much time does anyone spend in the 'get info' window?... 🤔

That Thunderbird icon is what my Samsung T5 appears as!

Automatically and without me doing anything (consciously, at least) to affect the display. So I assume that is a built-in icon.

there are apple-designated icons for different drives (ie usb, thunderbolt). that's the default from your mac's icon database, not the drive manufacturer. and again, you can find all sorts of great icons online...

EDIT: it's also true that, if you add an already-formatted-for mac drive to your setup, it may very-well have a custom icon....

... this isn't Intel-specific.

Previously, these wallpapers were only on the new iMacs. Beta 2 brings them to all machines, Apple Silicon and Intel.
Technically those wallpapers were always there in the Desktop Pictures folder (Any Mac running Big Sur 11.3 I believe will have them located there) - just for whatever reason they wouldn't show up in the default

On the latest build which came out today - is anyone having an issue running Microsoft Remote Desktop ? Worked in Beta1 - but now when I open it just closes.

New display preferences for re-arranging positions (sadly, don't have my dedicated external monitor plugged into see it with 3 at the moment.)

Clicking on the name first allows you some "quick options" and at the next level it allows you to adjust resolution, etc. as before, but now inside a modal which is on top of the settings view. There is a vertical tab-like list for switching between connected displays to modify others.

The presence of the keyboard and mouse here is interesting, perhaps leading into the eventual introduction of Universal Control. If nothing else, it may make this tool's purpose (arranging the layout) a little less abstract for less technical users.

I'm a little surprised they didn't rename "Launchpad" to "App Library", just for consistency.

I think something's planned for Launchpad, quite telling it's been removed from the keyboard of the M1 Macs. It's also a surprising neglected for a core feature of macOS remaining unchanged since it's introduction with Lion in 2011. It needs a complete overhaul.

Personally I can see them incorporating Launchpad into the Dock so you click a button and the Dock expands to show all your Apps.
