My Mac Pros 5.1 both have a Radeon 580 Sapphire Pulse with no boot screen.
I found on the internet that I need to create a USB installer with
Should I deactivate SIP? Some sites mention that, this one doesn't.
To boot the USB installer I need to remove all hard drives, erase the PCI SSD I want to use. Some sites say I should remove that one first too, others don't.
I would get a boot screen after the patch. provided the Radeon is in Game mode.
(a) Can I still go to Mojave and then back to Monterey without issues?
(b) Do I need a USB hub?
(c) Should I deactivate SIP when installing and can I activate it again after installation?
(d) How should I use OpenCore Patcher on post-install. Is that from the USB disk?
(e) Do I have to remove the PCI SSD too and Clear the NVRAM to boot from the USB stick?
(f) Do I have to install open core on the PCI SSD before or after the Monterey installation or is this automaticly done by the USB stick?
My thanks are great for those persons who can help me.

[ORIGINALLY POSTED in Manually Configured OpenCore Thread]

This thread isn't the place for help with OCLP - for that you should follow the excellent Dortania guide/instructions. If you have issued the OCLP Discord is very active and the best place to get more detailed help with OCLP.

The purpose of this thread is on manually developing, installing, and managing a manually configured OpenCore setup for the cMP. It works great up to and including Monterey.

May I ask, thanks.

Running Monterey with OCLP 1.4.2.

Is it possible to leave the NVME drive alone which I'm on Monterey, and keep Monterey as a back up and put in another clean drive and upgrade to Sonoma, then update the new OCLP 1.5.0 package >?

Thank you.

Ops, sorry I think I posted in the wrong section perhaps?

This thread is almost exclusively about OCLP. There is a different thread about just using OC.

Thanks. Everything runs fine now on my two Mac Pro's 5,1 with Open Core Legacy Patcher 1.50 and Monterey.
A pleasant suprise is that I didn't need to desactivate SIP or use the terminal and I didn't need an USB HuB. I removed the internal HDs and erased the PCI SSD. Then I was able to boot with the USB stick without the option key. I did a clean install on both Macs. Then I put the HDs with older OS back. Both Macs have 32 GB RAM, A Radeon 580 Sapphire Pulse, an Acccelsior NVMe PCI SSD and an USB3 card. Another pleasant surprise is that Bluetooth and Wifi are supported without a hardware upgrade and that my legacy Wifi card in one of the Macs which didn't work above El Capitan works with the OCLP. There is only a slight problem on one of the two that the fans are more noisy there. And I am unable to select the Mojave HD because the disk selector screen only appears one second and then the macs boot under Monterey. (the option key doesn't work)

I have another question:
Etrecheck reports that SIP is disabled. Can I safely re-enable it or won't the system boot anymore? Or is it suffcicient to run a malware scanner in the background: Microsoft Defender from Office 365?

Because I can't boot anymore under Mojave, I decided to uninstall Monterey and OCLP on one of my two Mac Pro's. Do I have to remove the PCI SSD where Monterey is installed on? Or is it enough to ZAP the PRAM? I have an internal HD with Mojave on it.

I zapped the PRAM and didn't remove the PCI SSD with OCLP. The computer booted from the internal HD with Mojave. Problem solved. I wiped the PCI SSD and copied Mojave to it with CCC. I had to re-enable SIP using the terminal. The question is: what is less unsecure: Mojave without security updates and SIP enabled or Monterey with security updates and SIP disabled but with Microsoft Defender active?

Monterey will have a better choice of browsers which is important for the overall security. I am currently using Big Sur, Mojave and Windows 11 Pro on my 13 inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro.

Less luck for me. I’ve got a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), and just installed 12.7.6, and now it won’t boot. This is with OCLP 1.5.

As with the other updates, need to boot into safe mode to repatch the root partition. Only thing is the Nvidia driver. I do this, then on the next boot gets to about 30%, stops for a bit and reboots.

No error messages, just reboots.

I can boot into safe mode, but can’t boot normally.

Upgraded my MBP6,2 to Monterey 12.7.6 via OTA without issues. Still applying Monterey post-install patches with OCLP 0.6.8 while booting with an Open Core EFI generated with OCLP 1.5.0 (actually a hybrid 1.5.0 / 1.6.0 version that allows me to boot Sequoia). I realize that my patching strategy is different from most others, but it still works for me.

Thank you developers!

Trying to patch Mac Pro Mid 2012 with following specs to MacOS Monterey from a patched bootable USB.
After doing EFI Boot > Install MacOS Monterey, the next screen does not progress at all and the progress bar kind of hangs... How to see the debugging (verbose) information of the issue to generate error log? Any pointer would be truly appreciated. Thanks

Good detective work! You shouldn't need to fully or partially disable SIP (SIP should remain fully enabled) if you do not need any OCLP post-install patches. For example, I can boot Sequoia Beta 5 on my MBP6,2 with SIP fully enabled, since I am currently waiting for OCLP Nvidia Tesla post-install patches and I am not applying any OCLP post-install patches to Sequoia. With SIP fully enabled and with my APFS seal fully intact, Sequoia Beta 5 actually runs well on my MBP6,2.

It's always best to test your new Open Core EFI changes on a separate bootable USB thumb drive (leaving your fixed-disk EFI unchanged) until you are certain that your EFI changes are working. After testing, copy the tested EFI to your fixed disk for production operation.

Note that if you override any default OCLP settings, like SIP, you'll likely need to restore your custom settings if you build a new Open Core EFI with OCLP.

Hi all. I have a 4K monitor capable of 120 Hz on RX 5700 XT in macPro 5,1 under Windows 10. But under Monterey/OCLP it’s limited to 60 Hz in prefs. Anyone know why and how to get higher refresh rates? 12.7.6 under latest version of oclp.

MacOS does support 120hz over hdmi 2.1 badly. I have seen it work on Displayport.

I have a MacPro 5,1 with Radeon RX580 running Monterey on Open Core (latest updates). My Dell 27 inch is normally 120 Hz, but now it's only 75 Hz. (DP 1.4)

One possibility is that you may need to patch EDID. I've read where others have successfully added display resolution and/or refresh-rate support by adding property AAPL00,override-no-connect with an EDID that you extract in Windows or other OS (other than macOS). You can read more about it here.

Alternatively, I've also read that a display firmware update may also fix the macOS display issue.

Update: with a shorter cable I can get 100 Hz. But display stream compression must be off to avoid constant attempts to resync.
