I've been having a bear of a time on this build-

tl;dr
My M1 MBP has suddenly decided to hide the curser when I select an App. I have to swipe up into Mission Control and then reselect the app again to get the curser back ... until it happens again.

My 2018 Intel Mac mini has decided that it doesn't want to mount any of my Encrypted Password Protected / Time Machine drives at login. I'm (along with others) having to unplug all External Drives before a cold boot. This has made my next issue a PITA- at some point after the Screensaver comes on, and I come back to unlock by moving the Trackpad, I'm prompted to enter my Password and then I get a spinning circle and ....... nothing. I'm also not the only one this is happening to.

These issues are not happening on my M1 MBP, and vice versa. This is worse (for me) than Ventura's rollout where two External Drives became corrupted and had to be tossed. It's been a long day.

If I install Sonoma via the full installer from the App Store, will it upgrade to Sonoma and keep all of my data intact? Just like a IPSW install on iOS*?

Or does it wipe my computer in the process.

An upgrade should keep all your apps and data by design - unless something goes wrong.

Again - assuming nothing goes wrong - to wipe your data during a macOS upgrade you need to manually re-partition/wipe your drive.

I upgraded from 13 to 14 no problem, but as always - make sure you have a backup, or at the very least store all your important stuff in multiple places (e.g. cloud sync, copied to external drive, etc.) first.

You really should have a backup (or ideally more than one form of backup) anyway. If you do, you should be able to upgrade with minimal hassle. May pay to check any of your mission critical apps for updates/compatibility first but from what I've seen so far in my experience things compatible with Ventura work just fine in Sonoma. YMMV.

The only way you can do a fully clean install of macOS is wiping your disk via Disk Utility. You used to be able to use Internet Recovery, but it seems this is just the standard install now. Otherwise, every way you install Sonoma will be a standard upgrade. Not a bad idea because Disk Utility is something you have to deliberately do, it shouldn't happen by accident.

Yup, that's it, and I agree. Unless the user deliberately goes out of their way to wipe stuff, this should be the default.

As above, unless something unexpectedly catastrophically goes wrong with the installer your data should be retained.

After installing macOS Sonoma 14.0 on my Mac Studio Max I have had a number of freezes when zooming into the screen. On boot up only sees 1 monitor instead of 2 and have to reboot.

Anybody else seeing this ?

Hello everyone.
Is there anybody who has same issue with failing DNS when using VPN.
I have this issue since Monterey, and when connected to work VPN using Cisco AnyConnect then after while DNS crashes. Safari and other Mac Apps DNS resolving stop working and every new website I visit with Safari end's with host resolving problem - same trought terminal with nslookup.

DNS Issue Bug

Is this fixed in MacOS Sonoma ?

Thanks.

The motion of the Sonoma Horizon wallpaper isn't smooth and results in judder. My iMac may not have enough graphic horsepower? Is there a setting adjustment I can use to smooth it out?

DNS Issue Bug

The cisco notes you reference indicate it is fixed in 12.3

I'm at my wits end (BUG) - cannot change FIND MY person widget.
I can't select it when I INITIALLY place it on my desktop - one choice, that's all.
I can't even CLICK to change to another person 90% of the time - very rarely it works.
Then when I do get the list of four people to change, it NEVER sets another person - it always reverts to the original.
Me, too. I have several family members in my FMF and I wanted to add one as a widget on my desktop. It only ever shows the same person, and if I edit it to try and change it to someone else (or add a second), when I click on "Person" then the window just disappears.

I hate sonoma. My MBP does not wake up from from sleep so often, reboots apps even these I don't keep open and animations slow down so dramatically. What a s***y system...

Edit: this may be the same issue as reported here #45

I have Intel MacMini 2018 currently on MacOS Ventura 13.6 (22G120) which is pretty much usable-stable with most of the show-stopper problems fixed.

I have been contemplating whether it is worth the risk to upgrade to Sonoma; however I had such a horrible time with Ventura 13.2 when external display problems made ultra-wide 49" monitor useless and then requiring workarounds at each reboot, along with other less severe problems. I was hoping that Sonoma would not follow in similar traumatizing bugs.

But it seems like Sonoma 14.0 will be like going through similar frustrations as early Ventura - any one concur or counter ?

Would really like to hear from you all.

My only issue so far is bluetooth. Mouse, trackpad, and keyboard randomly disconnect for some reason. Thankfully it's not a lot but maybe 2 or 3 times all day. Just enough to by annoying.

I haven't had a single issue with Sonoma. That's not to say that some of the features work the way I wish they did, because some do not. That being said, I had no issues that I recall with Ventura either.

Update on this- I stopped using the apps Amphetamine and Jettison, just stopped them from loading at login and then rebooted. I’ve also disabled the option to unlock my Mac with my Apple Watch. So far so good.

I've encountered a couple issues since I was forced onto Sonoma (long story).
First, it seem that trying to copy large files (2GB+) via USB is a problem.
When trying to copy about 2 years of work off my 14" MBP to an Aura SSD carrier with an Apple SSD in it, I'd get spontaneous disconnects. Before Sonoma I was on Monterey for a long time. I used these drives constantly to keep my Mac from building up too much stuff on it's internal SSD. So almost every week when I was traveling I would go through and move raw files, music projects and filed recordings over. Never had a glitch.
Tried different cables, even a USB to USB 3 adapter. No dice.
Finally used an SD card as a workaround.
Anyone else?

The other one is pretty well attested over at Adobe
When using Adobe Photoshop, the Save for Web dialogue is only displaying the upper left quarter of preview.
Adobe swears up and down Apple broke something with Sonoma.

Also just now I've noticed I can't finish signing in to AppleId for all services.
I've got iCloud working for most other things except Mail doesnt seem to be synced for the iCloud account.
But I'm getting 2 alerts that I need to finish something AppleId in system settings.
Screenshot 2023-10-09 at 1.32.07 PM.png

Both of which go nowhere when you click on them.
The first literally doesn't do anything.
The second pops up a blank window that never does anything.

ScreenshotPM.jpg

I waited a half hour, plugged in an ethernet cable etc.
It just sits there forever.
NBD I almost never use iCloud email as anything but a backup recovery address.
Just want the little red dot to go away.
Anyone else?

IMHO it is not working as intended to.

When typing in Mail app, Notes, Safari address bar..., the arrow representing enabled caps lock is not showing. Only when I stop writing, or make a significant pause. When I type with CAPS LOCK ENABLED, the arrows stays there all the time, which is unnecessary, but it is not staying in a way of the text, so I find it more as a cosmetic bug, not annoyance.

To be honest with you, I find this helpful, as there are lot of people who are typing and looking at keyboard and not display. After they stop writing they automatically look up on the displayed text and check for typos. At that time they see on display if the caps is still on, or not. In the moments between typing and checking one can easily forget to turn off caps and continue to type with all cap and then recorrect. This can be frustrating for people who often forget to do so.
This is another layer of letting you know that you continue to type with capital letters. Even this does not happens to me often, I find it helpful and appreciate it.

Agree, option to disable it should be available in settings...For example Settings --> Keyboard --> Text Replacement
I hadn't noticed an issue with it not working for specific applications. If I turn on CAPS, then the indicator is on.
But as I indicated, I know how to type. Looking down at the keyboard and then looking up to check for errors after the fact, isn't the proper way to type. While I think the end user would be better served (and have an improved career skill) learning to type, that's not my business. Like you, I think a toggle would solve the issue for everyone.

TL/DR: we agree, but I haven't seen the app specific bug.

Some bugs I have:

Unmounting an SSD, sometimes macOS will say it wasn't unmounted properly and then it will spam me with this message every time I wake from sleep or screensaver.

Selecting a file or folder on the desktop is still buggy. The desktop isn't being properly focused on.

Two bugs that have existed for a few years now:

Sidebar in the Stocks app scrolls up on its own if I click on anything.

Scroll bars don't appear on the TV and Music apps at certain window sizes, so if you are using a Wacom you can't scroll. You have to resize the window until the scroll bar appears again.

MacOS Sonoma 14 - problem with Keynote
I use Keynote on a daily basis and record my presentations with the Keynote audio presentation recording.
I just installed the new mason Sonoma 14 and now it doesn't find my microphone and does not record any sound anymore.
Is this a problem with the new keynote software? does anyone know how to fix it? Does apple know about this recording problem in the keynote upgrade?
Thanks for your help
Sorry for my English

My GF reported that she upgraded her 2019 iMac to Sonoma and it was a huge mistake. Beach balls and freezing, 5-10 minutes to log in after boot. Generally unstable system. She also has M1 MBP and M2 Air and she has not upgraded. Based on her experiences and all troubles described in this thread, I will wait to upgrade.

You could find a new GF that upgraded without issue?

Jokes aside, most people aren't having those issues. Does she have any external hardware connected to it, or is she running any half-dodgy software like clean-my-mac or whatever? She should remove any VPNs, network monitors (little snitch) etc and re-install them after the upgrade.

haha, nope, since she has the newer laptops all she's really doing on the iMac is Sims 4. I'll have to have her look at all the startup apps and see if she can get it back.

I suggested just wipe it and start fresh but she'd prefer not to.

New issue:

The 'Drift' screensaver is broken.

It ignores all selected color options and defaults to red hues only. Not only that, but once activated, there is barely anything on the screen at all, it's mostly blank space with just a few 'Drift' bits here and there, unlike before the Sonoma upgrade.

I also had (and still has) this issue. I did find a workaround after playing around with different wallpapers and image formats. It works on all Apple wallpapers as is. For custom wallpapers, you can make it work by adding the wallpaper to the Photos app and choosing your wallpaper from there instead of from a folder in Settings.
