How to install macOS Sequoia on an unsupported Mac.

This article was just posted on Macworld, it is about OCLP, there is some confusing info about having to use a compatible mac to download an unsupported OS version, also about USB's I think. Maybe someone who knows them, could point this out.

I’m trying to update my mid-2011 iMac from Sonoma to Sequoia 15.2, but the installation gets stuck on “Preparing macOS Sequoia 15.2.”

OCLP has been updated to version 2.2.0, but the installation simply doesn’t start.

When I attempt to download the update, I briefly see OCLP launch (icon in the taskbar), but it then disappears, and after downloading is complete, the process gets stuck at the message mentioned above (35 minutes remaining).

I might be missing something obvious, but that sounds normal. Maybe just wait for it to prepare?
If that does not work, d-load the appropriate installer from mrmacintosh.com Good luck.

I have had a weird problem with my Macbook Pro 8.2 (2011 15"). This is the one with the AMD GPU that fails (mine failed about 5 years ago.) It was running Sequoia fine (surprisingly well) but then an Apple update made the display go black. I ended up doing an SMC and NVRAM reset which undid the disabling of the dGPU and I also tried to wipe the SSD and do a clean install. I have managed to get the install to complete with the fuzzy screen but I can't get it to boot afterwards. I could probably get Linux to install but I don't know if you can re-do the NVRAM GPU disable from Linux. I have also tried Ventura and Sonoma with no joy. Any help or advice much appreciated...

Had a friend that had this reasonably well fixed. Read this if you have not and still want to give it a go:

It is also technically possible to replace the GPU but probably not worth it, unless you have a very good friend in a repair shop. Good luck.

The issue is that I had it working these last 5 years with the broken dGPU but as far as I can work out, I need Mac OS on there to do the fixes and it just won't boot. Anyone know how to do the NVRAM and kext fixes from the install USB which does boot or from Linux? Single user mode just boot loops and even safe mode won't finish booting. Recovery doesn't work either.

Combine this post with the next one, sorry I made a mess of this, to much experimenting.

I did the above post after downloading the latest beta, that came at the same time as the IOS and ATV betas. It used to be that I would have a white screen after an update before the patching process, recently the desktop has been normal at startup, but the mouse control is still iffy. The OTA update process was smooth, although I did have to sign in, and there was an error sign about windows something or other. After the patching no problems.

Do you get any video signal whatsoever with an external monitor connected in open or closed lid mode while holding the option key? Does the machine gives off the POST chime?

MacBookPro6,2 is running good. Some slight lag here and there, but not unusable.

Issues:
- Keyboard brightness varies, but re-applying patches and clearing NVRAM (3 chimes) brings it back most of the time.

- I did have to change my wallpaper and change the wallpaper in the plist file (Library/Preferences/com.apple.wallpaper.plist) because it kept on trying to revert to the animated sequoia wallpaper which would lag TF out of everything. Looking at it again, it changed itself back, but doesn't try to load anymore 🤷‍♂️
Code:
<dict>
    <key>SystemWallpaperURL</key>
 <string>file:///System/Library/Desktop%20Pictures/.wallpapers/Sequoia%20Sunrise/Sequoia%20Sunrise.mov</string>
</dict>

I don't use all features, so I'm sure there is stuff that doesn't work 100% due to being Intel based.

External monitors haven't worked since the dGPU failed. The machine does chime and the backlight comes on. I get a fuzzy boot screen and can choose OCLP, Install Mac OS Sequoia etc but the boot process doesn't complete and ends with a black display. I can get terminal etc if I boot from a USB stick but with the fuzzy display.

I have the same issue on one of my Macs.
Not much to do with OCLP and the known fixes are in the link I gave you a few posts back.
The one thing to try in OCLP would be to build a new OCLP with "Disable Firmware Throttling" on a USB stick and boot from that. Unlikely to help but maybe worth a shot.

Thanks for the tip. OCLP has really kept this MacBook alive, I have gone through Big Sur, Monterrey, Ventura, Sonoma and Sequoia. In the past, i have always been able to do a clean OCLP install and get it working again which is why I am asking on here. I don't really want to go back to Lion or High Sierra and start again. If I can't get Sequoia working, I'll probably have another go with Ubuntu, Mint or Pop OS which all really fly on this machine. I think I can blacklist the AMD drivers and go that way.

These issues predate my use of OCLP on this MacBook but OCLP has really helped me keep on top of it. The "root patches" disable the dGPU and make sure it just uses the iGPU. I think my issue is getting to the point where Mac OS is fully installed, boots and I am able to root patch or use the NVRAM args to disable the dGPU. If I can't manage this, I may try to install Linux and blacklist the AMD drivers as an alternative approach. When it works, it is my most productive laptop where I can just get stuff done quickly.

Can you see the boot picker or any other display while booting?

Strange behaviour the first couple of times creating a 15.2 install installer for my test cMP 5,1. I also had a similar problem trying to install 14.7.2. Tried different USB sticks and re-downloaded the full installer. Reapplied my never been started BootROM image (thank you @tsialex) and the third attempt of building the USB stick it worked installing macOS 15.2. And it’s running buttery smoother.

Not sure I can move my main production cMP 5,1 over just yet. Is there a list somewhere of what software will or won’t work using OCLP with macOS 15.2 due to the AVX/AVX2 issue? I read somewhere that FCP, Motion etc transition completely over to a code set utilising AVX/AVX2 but I can’t see if older versions like those that are now using it will work in Sequoia. I’m quite happy to stay on Sonoma because I eventually ironed out all the other issues I had (formatting my User Fusion Drive to APFS has finally sorted out all my problems).

I have (4) 5,1 machines and all apps that ran on Sonoma are running on Sequoia here...
Adobe, Logic, Final Cut ect....
cheers!

Can someone with a MBP 9,1 Mid 2012 who has updated to 15.2 confirm that Safari is no longer working with webgl? There is a simple test page at get.webgl.org. I was not having issues in 15.1.1, but it looks like webgl is the source of my safari problems in 15.2. I just want to confirm it's something with 15.2 OCLP and not something specific to my machine somehow.

Does anyone have a workaround for getting a USB Web cam to work in Sequoia 15.2 on a cMP?
I tried 2 diff cameras and No Go.
p.s. I am getting Audio from the cameras just no video.
