On my wife's laptop(Macbook Pro 13 Late 2014) when running Safari 14 within BigSur 11.1 she is experiencing constant "blue balling" when selecting for example the Reading List. Activity Monitor shows Safari using over 96% CPU.

I am really taking the heat for this, its' my fault for updating from Catalina 10.15.7 for her. She was upset that youtube videos kept yielding errors within the Catalina context. Since I was having such good experince with Big Sur, I figured it was time to bring her machine upto date with BigSur 11.1 as she was using Safari 14 on Catalina.

Well that didn't end well, I am wondering what is driving this lagginess on the Safari 14. If anyone on this forum thread has clue I am open to suggestions as were to begin looking to fix this from my end.

Or do I have to wait for Apple fix it? 🤔

I’m firm believe with Mac that old you better open it up and replace the dried out thermal paste on processor! That should cool it down some!

TextEdit:

Deleting text in a document results in automatically scrolling back to the top of the document, which is a real pain when editing long documents.

Selecting text that includes a line break doesn't work as it should. Place the cursor on a line, hold the Shift key and press right arrow to select text. When the end of a line is reached, it doesn't continue to the next line with the selection, as it used to.

Frequent beachballs when editing text documents (.txt or .rtf or .srt), resulting in the need to Force Quit.

Finder:

Frequent beachballs and slow response when scrolling or selecting files and folders.

Booting in Safe Mode:

Dock takes a long time to appear. Everything is extremely sluggish, with frequent beachballs.

Yeah, it should not take long. Ten minutes tops.

as for Big Sur itself: I hate the new icons. They hurt my eyes. Especially iMessage, FaceTime, calculator, chess and image capture.

Why doesn’t Apple combine phone, iMessage and FaceTime into one Teams-like app on all platforms? How many similar green icons do we need?

Otherwise seems pretty solid to me so far.

I have two weird bugs I'm experiencing in Big Sur 11.1.

1. when downloading a file using a web browser it freezes on the "save as" dialog box. same issue across Safari, Brave and Edge. Note, if I select "save to downloads" directly it works without problem, it's only freezes on the save as dialog box.

2. virtually everything in system preferences is frozen. I can open each item, but when I open them I can't make changes.

I would guess these two issues are related. would upgrading to the latest beta help? should I just trash it and reinstall fresh?

Yup! I had a 2013 that would freak out and shutdown whenever I had too many tabs in Safari open. It got worse after I installed Catalina. I read similar advice, replaced the thermal paste (which was completely dried out), and it was all good after that.

Well, ran into my first bug when using V11.1 of Big Sur. But it seems to be application related.

A little while ago, I tried to print a page while using Brave. It came up with a dialogue which said that the selected printer is not available or not installed correctly, and hence it could not print. It did offer me the option of using a system dialogue to print, and that worked. I did not have this issue with Firefox and Big Sur, nor with the same version of Brave in my Catalina environment.

Oh well, a minor inconvenience.

Big Sur is randomly locking my wife's M1 MBA with the screensaver, right in the middle of doing things. There is a separate thread about it here, but I wasn't sure if the issue was listed in this thread (I can't find it). Seems a fairly widespread issue, given the Google search results. Also seems a fairly major issue!

Worst operating system...ever. I have a brand new iMac 27 and this is its first O.S. clean installed and it’s a POS. Its so bad in, in fact, that I will be downgrading to Catalina. It crashes every second or third "reboots", It will not recover from sleep without having to hold down the power button, Safari restarts on its own after indicating it is using too much RAM, (I am loaded to the tilt with 128GB and a video Card with 16GB) which is a farce. Mail freezes and doesn’t respond to mouse clicks for minutes at a time. My Bluetooth keyboard will randomly type 30 or 40 empty spaces on its own. The Bluetooth keyboard will also get a latency effect of about 1 second which can only be remedied with disconnecting and re-connecting the device.

This is a disaster of an operating system.

While I don’t have near issues with Big Sur as you, I did experience the keyboard typing in extra spaces/characters issue. A reboot seemed to have fixed the issue as I have not had it happen in a couple of weeks.

Check you memory booting from a thumb drive with Memtest86. I had my OWC memory testing fine with Apple's diagnostics, but nope its showed defective memory, and yes swapping its out even though they claimed they couldn't verify it was bad worked. The chief problem is that most of those memory test gear don't check memory operating at the same speed as in your Mac. Memory issues as such are rare, but this really is a useful piece of software when you have unusual problems. I just used the free version.

So what do Apple say? What do Apple diagnostics say? If this a clean install without any third party software you almost certainly have a hardware problem. If the 128GB is not all Apple RAM, run it with only Apple RAM - if that 'fixes' it you know the the extra RAM is at fault.

Check you memory booting from a thumb drive with Memtest86.
I had the same experience with OWC RAM (in iMac 2019) and used memtest. The Australian sellers of OWC RAM were good to deal with on this issue.

Interesting bug you've got with TextEdit. I tried testing the delete text on mine; it works without issue (as in, does not jump back to the top of the document). I didn't get a chance to test the line break issue, and beachballs doesn't seem to happen so far.

Did you do an upgrade or clean install? I would recommend testing this in a new test user account, just to rule out OS-wide issues, then report back.

Today, I needed to retrieve a password (safari-preferences-passwords) but it won’t accept my system password, even after a reboot.

Sense you still use an Intel Mac use this to reset your system password:

First, boot into single-user mode:

1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple)
and the S keys until you see white text appear.

At the prompt, type fsck -yf and press the return key.
Type mount -uw / and press the return key.
Type rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone and press return.

Type reboot

When the computer restarts, it should act as if you had
just installed OS X for the first time - it will prompt you
for information to set up an administrator level account”

This was given to me ( by a use called g/re/p) some time ago and it works on a Intel Mac!

Or reset SMC (works for this particular problem -- at least worked for me).

Additional Notes

iCloud Safari tabs not in sync - Apple notified in Nov. of 2020 (it's Jan. 4th 2020 now)
  • Started when I updated to iOS 14, iPadOS 14, & macOS Big Sur.
  • Affected devices: iPhone XS, iPad Pro, & non-Apple Silicon/mid 2020 MacBook Pro.
  • For the past few months, other Apple-product users have been reporting the same issue on here, on reddit subreddits, & on Apple “Discussion/Forums”.
  • Another previously-working feature ruined with software updates.
  • You would think such a big company would release a software update to fix such an issue within a matter of a week. However, it has been months since others and I made Apple aware of the issue.
  • I called today just to be told that they are "still investigating the issue".

I filed FB8962355 for Safari iCloud Tabs being all wonky, too. What's really weird for me is that sometimes Safari on macOS shows iOS or iPadOS Safari tabs that are either closed or were open briefly a few hours ago. Totally jacked up. Sometimes my iPhone and iPad are syncing, but not very often. This has really been irking me.

Handoff seems to be having a similar issue. And I've already done plenty of BlueTooth troubleshooting, too. Issues were happening on my older 2015 MBPr 15in and now on my new M1 MBP.

I've still been unable to rename the thunderbolt kexts to prevent the random crashes. I was able to do so in Catalina, but not Big Sur. I've been using the method (I saved it to a word document, forgot where I found it:

"
csrutil disable
csrutil authenticated-root disable
mount -uw / Volumes /Macintosh\ HD/
cd / Volumes / ** Mac Partition Name ** / System / Library / Extensions (press Enter)

mv AppleThunderboltDPAdapter.kext AppleThunderboltDPAdapter.kext.bak

mv AppleThunderboltEDMService.kext AppleThunderboltEDMService.kext.bak
mv AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext.bak
mv AppleThunderboltIP.kext AppleThunderboltIP.kext.bak
mv AppleThunderboltNHI.kext AppleThunderboltNHI.kext.bak
mv AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext.bak
mv AppleThunderboltUSBApapters.kext AppleThunderboltUSBApapters.kext.bak
mv AppleThunderboltURDM.kext AppleThunderboltURDM.kext.bak

kmutil install -u –force –volume-root / Volumes / ** NAME Mac Partition **
bless -folder /Volumes/**ИМЯ Раздел Mac**/System/Library/CoreServices –bootefi –create-snapshot"

I'm getting the read only file system error. Meanwhile, for the first AppleThunderboltDPAdapter it says no such file/directory exists.

What's interesting too, is that I found a link to this on an older reddit post/thread when someone asked for help with Catalina. https://realmacmods.com/product/macbook-pro-nocrash-utility/ This actually works for my Big Sur, but i'd rather fix it via terminal.

The Activity Window in the Music App is continuing to open to the Desktop while the Music app is in Full Screen. I filed FB8960553 for that one. It should either open/hover over the Music app or it should open like the Playing Next or Lyrics window slides open from the right. Even that, IMO, is incorrect behavior as it opens and covers what's underneath. The window should just be dynamic and fit. Similar to how a new Email opens in the Mail app. You can tell the different teams working on the different core macOS apps don't ever really work together.. No consistency at all.

Anyone experiencing slow iMessage syncing? Used to be near instantaneous syncing and sending, along with the "..." when people were typing. Now it takes about 10-15 seconds to receive after my phone, it takes about the same to send, and I never get "..." on my 2020 MBP.

At times, yes, I'm seeing iMessages not syncing normally. Sometimes it seems to be real time and sometimes it takes many minutes. I've seen almost 10 minutes go by until a message that's showing on both my iPhone & iPad finally show on my Mac.

Had another Mission Control crash, too. Well, it just stopped working. The only way I can reboot while docked is from the Terminal. Otherwise I'll have to undock and then hard reboot. Filed another Feedback for that, too.
