I’m not sure if this is a Big Sur issue or M1 issue, but any time I try to rename a folder on my network drive (Synology) my screen flickers pink and the machine restarts.

Okay I don't want to blame BS because this morning I ran Onyx for the first time. I just noticed that all my Widgets are gone. If I edit the widgets nothing is listed and I have to do a search. Anyone else having this problem?

Edit: I waited a few minutes and when I went to edit the widgets a 2nd time I had the full list of widgets. I just had to put them back.

Hey guys,

I upgraded from Catalina to Big Sur on my 2013 MacBook Pro 15” and I’m getting random crashes against. I would typically use a workaround where I rename the applethunderboltkext. However, I did some searching and tried this one here (post #22) https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/big-sur-and-applethunderboltnhi-kext.2267818/

no errors, everything goes through. However, my laptop still seems to get the random crashing. Has anyone found out a work around yet?

I was just curious if anyone has tried to see what SMB transfer rates were on Big Sur? Last night I tried transferring a big file over 1g ethernet and would get about 150MB/sec, then it would slow to a crawl about 10MB/sec for a long while, then send another blast around 150MB/sec. It would cycle like this over and over. The end result was a pretty slow transfer. I have Big Sur on a 2015 MBP to the same NAS and it doesn't have that issue. It gets a sustained 140-150MB/sec.

Anyone experience this and have there been any fixes?
Same problem here with 11.1 -- and also, if I try in parallel to do a "ls -la" in a terminal window on the share I am copying my file to, the command gets blocked, until the transfer resumes, and so on...

macOS 11.1 (20C5061b)

I have noticed that my BlueTooth connected non-apple speakers/ear pods are unusable due to the miserable sound quality. Terrible cracking & popping noise & muffled music. I am not sure what release of Big Sur Beta started this because I usually run them from my iPhone or iPad.

Anybody else noticed this with their MBP?

I've had this issue as well. I have to turn Bluetooth off and on again to fix it.

11.1 brings the "incredible shrinking open/save dialog box" show to the mix. No matter how many times I resize it, it reverts back to being just tall enough to show 2-5 items in the window, depending on the app I'm in.

In the password login box on my 2019 iMac, I couldn’t log in because loads of extra characters were being added to my password. A powering off/on of the keyboard seems to have fixed the problem. I never had this problem before until immediately after the 11.1 update.

Beware of ccleaner mac. This causes many crash reports. ccleaner was one of my favorite apps for mac for years but now i can not recommend it anymore.

That's too bad. Not sure how much more robust ccleaner is, but Onyx is an excellent choice. Been using it for a number of years, and a Big Sur version was released on Monday. I also use it in combination with Tech Tool Pro, and both of them work well together.

You don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps to keep your Mac running well, and some of these apps can do more harm than good. Most only remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, which does nothing more than free up some drive space, with the risk of deleting something important in the process.

These apps will not make your Mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on a drive does not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space. In fact, deleting some caches can hurt performance, rather than help it, since more system resources are used and performance suffers while each cache is being rebuilt.

Many of these tasks should only be done selectively to troubleshoot specific problems, not en masse as routine maintenance. macOS does a good job of taking care of itself, without the need for 3rd party software. Among other things, it has its own maintenance scripts that run silently in the background on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, without user intervention.

Five Mac maintenance myths

I disagree. My use of Onyx and Tech Tool Pro help to keep my Macs "lean, mean, and clean". Yes, in terms of actual disk space used, the cleanup by such apps does not, usually, free up that much more space. For that, one really needs to do disk cleanup on their own (which most folks neglect to do). What such apps are good for is checking the integrity and stableness of some important aspects/functions. For example, I really like it that Tech Tool Pro can check for the two "snapshot" volumes on my internal SSD, and also rebuild them. For folks who use their Mac very, very intensely, that can sure help.

In many ways, it's similar to cleaning and maintaining an automobile. One does not have to actually clean it, and the car (as long as mechanically the car works fine) will still run. But I insist on doing just the opposite, and keeping both our vehicles clean (my wife certainly appreciates that I clean her car also). Similarly, one can neglect to do some basic tasks with automobiles, like checking tire pressure, checking the oil, checking the anti-freeze, checking the brake fluid, etc. But if an issue develops from such neglect, watch our for bigger and costlier issues.

I don't want to cleanup my files because of myth´s i want it because i am a lazy man. Logs, caches, cookies and junk files to clean up this is part of my maintenance behavior.
I know cleaners can harm a system, thats wha i need some tool to clean without background monitoring.
I will try onyx. Seems to be one of the first and rare universal apps for cleaning.

hm onyx requires system restart for cleaning can i clean without restart?

I've set the system language to my native language and then reverted it back to English but some titles are still displayed in my native language, is there any relevant preference file i can delete?

Onyx, and all the other "cleaners" available simply FORCE what the OS itself already does on a schedule. macOS already runs all the maintenance routines in the middle of the night, once per week, and once per month. All you have to do is leave the computer turned on.

I love Onyx, but it's not a magic bullet. It does (as do other apps) offer a bunch of other features as well, but if all you want is "cleaning/maintenance"-type tasks, it's a complete waste of drive space. That being said, it's nice to run the tasks when YOU want to, not when Apple decided they should be run.

Why is there a white line between the window and taskbar? Is it supposed to be like that or is this a bug? If it's a design feature gotta say it does not look very elegant.

That's the window's frame in dark mode, not a separate line.

I know it's the frame, but why is it visible in that way? Why is it white when the window is dark? It's a strange design choice. Safari in dark mode has the same issue.

And the window doesn't even cover the entire space between the menu and window. There's a very visible gap. The kind of design oversight that would never be accepted under Steve Jobs. This is with the window maximised:
