After 3 failed attempts to install the web driver with SIP disabled, I followed the advice in the link I posted after removing the SIP patch via your instructions (thank you), enabled SIP and now have the latest Nvidia driver installed.
The installation of the web driver did require SIP to be enabled contrary to your comment...
"The nVidia Web Driver doesn't require SIP to be enabled to install"
Anyhow after re-disabling SIP all is well again and I'm back running High Sierra.:)

I'm always using my Mac's with disabled SIP and disabled gatekeeper. Always used nVidia Web drivers, and never noticed any problem with it. Maybe, you have enabled gatekeeper, and sometimes enabled gatekeeper with disabeld SIP creating strange things and error messages. Maybe, this is the main problem, not the disabled SIP.

No, I don't think so...
But whatever, enabling SIP allowed the driver installation to complete and I'm once again a happy camper.:D

@dosdude1 Is it possible to create a splash screen for the bootloader that's used for loading AFPS ? Just curious if the bootloader text that is shown when powering up can be hidden behind a image of some kind. Not a huge deal, just curious

HI All, I'm new here long time reader though.
I running a Mac Pro early 2008
2 x 3.2 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon
Thanks to Dosdude1's blog I was able to get Sierra 10.13.1 running on it.
I've downloaded the 10.13.3 combo installer from Apple
The questions I have are
1. do I have to run through the whole installation process from Dosdude's blog to upgrade to 10.13.1 ?
2. What is the pre install looking for to determine that its an unsupported Mac is it just the age of the processor?

Hello fellow 3.1 owner, so now you are on High Sierra.
Have you tried to update your Mac to 10.13.3 via the App Store?

If you downloaded the Combo 10.13.3 installer from the Apple Support Downloads pages it will not install on an unsupported Mac without first modifying the Distribution file, instructions to follow.
The answer to your second question is that the pre-installer checks that your Logic Board ID meets the installers requirements, and then it checks to see if you Mac is listed as a nonSuupportedModel, these are the things we need to change in the Distribution file.

Modifying the Combo Updaters for High Sierra.

Download Combo.

Open Combo.

Move Combo .pkg to desktop.

Open Terminal.

Enter pkgutil --expand ~/Desktop/macOSUpdCombo 10.13.3.pkg ~/Desktop/Expanded

Open Distribution file in BBEdit

Change Distribution file change Board iD to Mac-F42C88C8

Go to nonSupportedModels and remove macPro 3.1

Save As .xml file on the Desktop

In Terminal chmod +x ~/Desktop/distribution.xml

Remove .xml extension

Move new Distribution file to expanded package

In Terminal pkgutil --flatten ~/Desktop/Expanded ~/Desktop/Modified.pkg

Using the .pkg extension is crucial.

Hi L Caputo: Yes I've tried the App store, App store opens fine but If I click on updates it just freezes and I have to kill it.
Thanks for the instructions my terminal skills aren't greatest but I'll give a shot.

It seems to be a feature of High Sierra on unsupported Macs that Apple apps seem to freeze after the OS has been updated. This can be resolved by downloading Onyx from Titanium Software and running its maintenance tasks, the app is free.

Once you start installing the modified combo update you may encounter an error towards the end of the installation, do not be alarmed, just restart the Mac and you should now be on 10.13.3.

Let us know how you get on.

I'm trying to install Sierra on my 2008 Mac Pro but it hangs when booting from the patch drive. Does it matter which version in Sierra installer I'm using?

OK I've followed these instructions and ended up with Modified.pkg on my desktop but when I launch it the installer runs and says This software is not supported on your system.

i just ended up reinstalling osx but some ones needs to take a look at the guest account when find my mac is on. it really broke my os install. i had file vault on at the time as will. it literately killed the booting of osx 10,13

Okay so did you check that you followed the procedure correctly.
Next can you check that you do have an early 2008 MacPro 3.1, if you have another model of MacPro the Board ID will be different. To find out what Board ID your Mac has download this, http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/IORegistryExplorer.shtml run the app, highlight MacPro 3.1 on the left and the Board ID will be displayed on the box on the right, four rows down. If it is different then this is the Board ID you need to enter in the procedure above.
And if it is a different MacPro to the 3.1 then you will need to remove that Mac from the nonSupportedModels list.

So when you modified the Distribution file and saved it to the desktop did it have the .xml extension?
Then in Terminal did you type the command chmod +x and then drag the Distribution.xml. file into Terminal
now press Return for the command to take place. Now click to highlight Distribution.xml and press Command-i to get the Info panel up, now remove the .xml extension and close the box, it will ask if you are sure you want to Remove the extension, click on Remove, the file should now change to an icon of a black screen with exec written in green. Now move this into the Expanded folder to replace the original Distribution file.
Now go back to Terminal and enter the pkgutil --flatten commands as shown previously.

Let me know how you get on.

Looks like I missed the part about dragging the .xml back into term I just changed the .ext
when changing the board ID am I just changing one entry or removing all of them?
I'll give it another shot.

Hello again

Right good we have the same Board ID what we need to do in Text Wrangler is go down to the section for Board IDs
and select one to replace, just one will do. I tend to replace one that has the same amount of characters, I think the one I choose to replace starts with F22 etcetera I just replace the characters after the F with the ones for the MacPro 3.1 Board ID. And then in the nonSupportedModel list MacPro 3.1 is way over to the right nearly at the end of the list just put the cursor behind the last apostrophe of 'MacPro 3.1' and back space to remove it and the apostrophe, be careful to also remove the comma so there is also only one between the two Mac identifiers left with of course the correct spacing.
Once you have done that click on File in the menubar and then Save As from the drop down, save it to the Desktop as Distribution.xml.
Next in Terminal enter the chmod +x command and press space after the x now drag the Distribution.xml into Terminal press return. Remove the .xml extension as described above and move this new modified Distribution into the Expanded folder replacing the original
In Terminal follow the commands to make the modified.pkg
Try again and let me know.

If your macOS version is 17D2047 you must find version 387.10.10.10.25.157 of the driver. Try here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/to...pdates-for-macos-high-sierra-update-01252018/

It appears from the error message that you need a driver for macOS 10.13.3 (17D2047) which can be found here at the bottom of the list.

thank you.
I have installed the drivers....
Everything works fine now!
[doublepost=1517430762][/doublepost]I have not noticed of big performance differences with the GTX 680 (previously I had an ATI RAEDON HD770).
But the other problems have disappeared (Sleep Wake and the annoying red rectangles).

thank you all!!

Great tread and many thanks to dosdude1! Currently running High Sierra 10.13.1 on a Mac Pro 3.1. I'm not able to update to 10.13.3. I have tried to update via app store, but no updates are visible. Tried to reinstall updates in Patch Updater, but no luck.

Is the only option to download the Combo 10.13.3 installer from the Apple Support Downloads pages?
