That will do nicely. I run a GTX 680 (2 GB) and no problems at all.
My GTX 680 (2GB) do the job but I wonder which is the best GPU for a Mac Pro 3,1 with High Sierra and metal 2.

Thanks for your opinion.

[doublepost=1519118557][/doublepost]@dosdude1 : again, you are doing a great job and we, all of us, have to thank you for that.

Just a question : is it possible to convert, without loosing anything, my SSD Samsung (startup disk) in APFS (actually in HFS+) : I have a Mac Pro 3,1 with a gtx 680 GPU (2GB), or do I have to make a new clean install ?

Many thanks for your expertise.

Today's 10.13.3 supplemental update to fix Messages crash with telugu character went without problems on MacPro 3,1 when run from Software Update
Just a little problem for me :
the version is now
macOS 10.13.3 (17D102)
and the Nvidia web driver is not working :

Hi fam,
I have a MacBook Pro 17 early 2009, running Sierra using the patch.
The last time I tried to upgrade to High Sierra the brightness and volume controls didn't work.
Is that already fixed? I don't see that anymore.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, but I prefer to wait for the Nvidia update. That said, the default macOS driver is working.

And I raise my questions :

- What is, for you, the best GPU for a MacPro3,1 running HighSierra and metal2 compatible ?

- Is it possible to convert, without loosing anything, my SSD Samsung (startup disk) in APFS (actually in HFS+) : I have a Mac Pro 3,1 with a gtx 680 GPU (2GB), or do I have to make a new clean install ?

Many thanks,

Yes, I believe your MacBook Pro 5,2 is completely supported via the patch software. On top of that you can use the Patch Updater for brightness and volume control.
-Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The nVidia GTX 680 supports metal 2 without problems. Since Apple has not recently supported newer nVidia cards like the nVidia 1070 and 1080, it is hard to finesse them into running with HS. You'll have better luck if you stay with recent AMD cards in the series used by Apple iMacs. I have a Sapphire AMD Vega 64 coming; it will require some power supply tweaks to run in a 3,1 but is reported to do so. However, putting this powerful card in the 3,1 does not make a lot of sense because the old slow PCI bus in the 3,1 might bottleneck the Vega 64. The AMD RX580 and 480 are reported to work too but you need to choose the right brand and onboard RAM size to match what Apple has used in its iMacs. There are plenty of forums here and elsewhere on this.
Personally, I'd minimize the GPU investment in a MP3,1 and stay with the cheaper GTX 680—you can find a secondhand EVGA GTX 680 (2 GB) for about $75 and flash it to the Mac rom; it works perfectly well for all but the most demanding graphics work in Premiere Pro or FCP.

good morning all... overnight (GMT), my MBP4,1 (17" early 2008) updated to 10.13.4 beta3 (17E160e), but showed a notification that the update was incomplete (some components failed to install). Two choices presented - Details or Install. Both eventually led to the AppStore where there was nothing to update. Strange behaviour - everything (in those parts of the OS that I use) seems ok. Wonder whether to leave well alone. Any suggestions welcome.

If u see 17E160e then it is updated. If the upgrade package contains updates for the recovery or firmwares, sometimes the app store fails to recognize the correct installation state.

Boot up is very slow (as is every other version of 10.13) but the system is responsive once logged in.
Hello to all
I’m new so I hope not to offend anyone.
My MacPro 3.1 takes an eternity to boot, I think. 20s from button presso to chime and 55s from chime to login. I have a Crucial MX300 525 gb, is there a way to make it perform better?

In 10.13, the driver for newer AMD GPU's are crashing with invalid instruction because it is require some newer CPU instructions (this instructions are introduced with Nehalem). So these cards are not recommended for HS because it's not working with stock HS drivers. These cards works with Sierra drivers, but with Sierra drivers, newer things (like metal 2) are not available.

For those interested, I've just released a new update to macOS High Sierra Patcher. In this update, I've revised the built-in macOS Installer downloading feature, now allowing you to resume the download if it has an error or is cancelled. This should help people with less stable Internet connections. Download here as always.
Downloaded Patcher 2.5.4 and have tried downloading 10.13.3 but it fails about half way through. Not able to resume the download, just starts a new download. Anything I should be looking out for.

Are you saving it to the same location you initially downloaded it to, without deleting the folder named "HighSierraDownload"?

Ok so on the third attempt it downloaded fully in one go, but no I had not been asking it to download to the same location, so that was the problem.

A problem I am continually encountering is that I had a previous install of High Sierra and I like to update using standalone updates which I then modify so they can be installed on my unsupported mac, this worked flawlessly on Sierra. What I am finding is that the modified Combo is accepted initially but when it came to select the disk for installation I would get a yellow warning triangle on my High Sierra volume.
So I completely erased the disk and reinstalled High Sierra using your patch. Successful installation. Now to apply the modified Combo update, but it will not install , yellow triangle and a dialogue to consult an Apple beta program website.
This is most confusing as the HD (a spinner) had been erased and a new 'clean' install applied. So why would it be picking up this apfsfusion beta program nonsense. See below for screenshot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Here are words of wisdom : I will keep my Nvidia GTX680 (2GB) for the moment.

I do not use FCP, Premiere Pro or FPS games...just Pixelmator or Affinity Photo, sometimes.
I work essentially with Office and "pdf" documents.

Pixelmator Pro does not want to be installed on my configuration while it is possible on my MacBook and my Mac Mini 2014...I wonder why ?

Any particular reason you are attempting to update your system using this convoluted method rather then just accepting the point updates from the App store?
Which have worked just fine for me on my MacPro3,1 running High Sierra.

Well it is my choice, and I do like to have the Combo updates. I can quite happily use the App Store I am just curious as to why I am getting the error when trying to install the Combo update. It is also generally accepted that installing the Combo update when it becomes available is beneficial to your Mac as it resets some system files and caches which can lead to improved performance.

It's not recommended that you convert the drive to APFS when using this patch, as it seems to cause some issues. If you choose to do it, however, you can do so in Disk Utility after booting from the patched USB installer drive... Just open Disk Utility, unmount the volume you want to convert, then in the Edit menu, select "Convert to APFS". Afterwards, apply the post-install patch with the APFS Patch selected.

That's really weird, I haven't seen that before... I'll have to look into it a bit. I'll post back if I find some kind of solution.

Just an update, my Mac Pro 3.1 has four disks in it each with different OS's. I took out three of the disks leaving the one in so I could reinstall High Sierra, on restarting I reset the NVRAM. Now booted into the High Sierra install USB and through Disk Utility reformatted the drive and continued to install High Sierra, once installed went to install the Combo update and now it will install without error, so it seems zapping the NVRAM with only one disk in has done the job. Previously I tried resetting the NVRAM with all four disks in but that didn't remove the problem. Somehow I have resolved the problem, so thank you for the patcher app and your attention.

Yet, you recommend using APFS if the boot disk is a ssd ?

So...?

So ! I did it anyway : now my startup disk (SSD Samsung) is "APFS" formatted and all is running without any loss...even faster than before, in HFS+.
I strictly followed your instruction, DosDude1 : perfect work !

Merci beaucoup !

Does anybody know if it is possible to get a GTX 660 running on High Sierra on a Mac Pro 3,1?

I've tested it some while ago (and still got the disk here with High Sierra on it) but after a few minutes I get a lot of graphic glitches and therefore reverted back to Sierra.

I guess because of a missing driver? I read about the Nvidia Webdriver but I also read a lot of horror stories about it so I'm not interested in playing russian roulette with my working machine. Maybe any of you got experiences with my hardware combination or that graphic card and High Sierra?

Please note I did not mac-patch the bios of my card (if that is possible at all) — so I don't see anything on screen until the OS and drivers are loaded. That's why I always keep a second (mac-compatible) card and backups close just in case.
