Dear friends, I can't install it on Mac Pro 3.0 (early 2008).

I downloaded new utility and Sierra installer through the menu of this util.

I installed in both HFS+ and new APFS file systems. Formated drives each way. I installed in on 2 new Seagate 1 TB drives different times. Surely, I do post-install procedures. But I always get white screen after some lines and nothing goes next ((

What should I do? I see a lot of people here have installed it on 2008.
What video card do you have installed?

macOS High Sierra on Unsupported Macs

4lxKiPF.png

For the first time since OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) in 2012, macOS Sierra (10.12) changed the official minimum requirements needed for installation, leaving many older (but still perfectly capable) Macs behind. Now macOS High Sierra (10.13) brings a new set of updates, and older Macs that can possibly run them.

  • MacBook (late 2009 or later)
  • iMac (late 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Air (2010 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (2010 or later)
  • Mac mini (2010 or later)
  • Mac Pro (2010 or later)

Note this space!

Preliminary Tested Models List:

MacBookPro5,5 (13-inch Mid 2009) - No issues
MacBookPro5,3 (15-inch Mid 2009) - No issues
MacBookPro5,1 (15-inch Late 2008) - No issues

MacPro3,1 (Early 2008) - No issues

iMac7,1 (Mid 2007 W/BCM94360CAX and SSE4 supported T9300) - Screen brightness not controllable (NightShift works with modified CoreBrightness.frameworks)

iMac9,1 (Early 2009) - Missing Screen Brightness Controls (buttons don't work either)

MacBook5,2 (Early [Mid] 2009 MacBook) - Screen brightness not controllable (buttons don't work either), volume buttons do not work, same trackpad detected as USB mouse issue

So are you saying that this currently resolved or that it will be in a future release of Dosdude's patch?

Hello, perhaps someone can help: I have installed High Sierra several times on a SanDisk-USB-stick; everything seems to went fine but starting from that volume finally ends up with the strikethrough-cycle. I applied the patches with the MacPostInstall-App and installed once the stick being HFS+ formatted and once APFS-formatted. Both with same result (strikethrough cycle). Who knows what could be helpful?

P.S.: Maybe of interest: I am writing this post from High Sierra with the USB-stick with High Sierra connected; "start volume" does not accept this USB-stick as start-volume.

Additionally I can inform that I can start with the USB-stick from a supported machine (Macbook 2009, MB 6,1) but unfortunately not from my Macbook Pro Mid 2009, MBP 5,5. Also can I run High Sierra from a USB-SSD on my MBP 5,5 but unfortunately not from the USB-stick. So where is my mistake or what did I forget? Any hints are kindly appreciated…

FYI, I finally got around to compiling the byte-unixbench and running it on the same

jhowarth, did you say that APFS is much slower?

dosdude1, I have Radeon HD 7950 3072 (flashed) card. It is working with Sierra 10.12.6 now and it shows boot logo in High Sierra. But when I start high it shows black text screen with lot of strings going then strings ends and only white screen.

Try reapplying the patches from USB High Sierra Patch USB installer again making certain to select the correct destination volume for the patching. Looks like the patches just didn't get applied correctly.

Many people with the MP 3,1 have found that it requires a standard Apple GPU and preferably the card it shipped with for a successful HS install/boot.
The problem is missing GPU drivers in HS.

I finally copied the installation of the USB-SSD to an image with disc utility, then from this image to the USB-stick. I restarted from the installer-stick and reapplied the patches. Now I am running High Sierra from a 1cm2 USB-stick connected via USB 2.0 and for me it is fast enough for testing purposes :)

I am not an high-level expert as most of you in this forum so I don't understand why with the MP 3,1 only the original Apple GPU card will permit a successful boot in High Sierra. My actual card, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 was not the original one for the MP Early 2008 3,1 but it was the one who shipped with the 2009 and 2010-2012 versions to my knowledge.
And the 2010-2012 are supported for HS installation. So "missing GPU drivers in HS" doesnt seems to me the right reason or the only reason??????????

Thanks in advance for an explanation.

It's not that the GPU drivers are missing, there is something else going on with the OS causing it not to finish booting with those cards installed. I've been looking through the OS files, but haven't yet been able to find anything that looks to be causing an issue.

Thanks for your reply dosdude1. I replaced the original GPU card with the HD 5770 for one obvious reason : Final Cut Pro in the 10.3 versions will not work with the old card................I didn't kept the old card so for the moment no chance to upgrade to HS if no workaround is found by the "masters" of this forum !!!!!!!!!!! But I am keeping faith Dosdude1 and the others will find a solution...........

Bad news for me. I have a Mac Pro 3,1 and the original GPU failed, so I bought an ATI Radeon HD 5770 (VRAM 1024 MB, ROM 113-C0160C-155, driver EFI 01.00.436).

I have not tried to install High Sierra yet...

I hope the problem is in Apple's betas...

I have a MacPro 4.1 (early 2009) flashed to 5.1 last year, when also I upgraded the processor card from dual core to a hex core, bumped it to 24gig of memory and upped the video card to the alternate "original" Apple nVidia GTX 285 1GB Video Card. I also installed a 480 gig OWC Mercury Electra 6G SSD ... I had crashes with some of the early betas, and backed them out. But now I'm thinking of trying again. Has anyone else gotten this kind of combo to work with High Sierra?

Can somebody install a Radeon HD 5770 or some other non-stock card in a Mac Pro 3,1, boot High Sierra, then reboot with a stock card or in Safe Mode, retrieve the contents of "/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports", and send it to me? Just compress the whole folder into a ZIP file. Also, "/var/log/system.log" may be useful also.

@dosdude1 Would the 5870 logs be of any use?

Any hope of getting the trackpad to be fully functional on the mid-2009 MBP? Touch to tap?
I here have a MBP 5,5 Mid 2009. My trackpad is fully functional, as far as I can see :) Touch to tap is to be configured in the system configuration for the trackpad. No idea, whether you did that. Also have a look at Systemeinstellungen/Bedienungshilfen/Maus&Trackpad (blue icon with a white person shown :)), where you can configure some useful improvements.

Same here: on my MacBookPro 5,2, mid 2009, 17", the trackpad seems fully functional. In fact didn't observe a single feature on this laptop which isn't working under HS with APFS - that is really great. I keep testing.
HS with APFS is installed on a USB-connected external Samsung 840 Pro SSD so far. Running stably since days. Looking forward to having the final release on the internal SSD.

Yes, any card that works in OS X, but is not the stock Radeon HD 2600 or GeForce 8800GT.
I'll do this tomorrow for a Radeon HD6870 that works perfectly in Sierra with efi boot screens and for an RX460 that also works perfectly in Sierra but without boot screens. In both cases when I have looked at the logs in Sierra, it has been caused (I think) by a WindowServer crash due to a GL driver bundle. And in the case of the RX460, if I Safe boot, it can get to a desktop that has no acceleration.
