Hi there, I installed High Sierra beta on my MBP 5,1 using dosdude1's patcher last week. Fast forward to today and I'm still at Beta 17A362a according to the About This Mac info. Is the update to release build supposed to pop up in the App Store eventually? If not, what is the "proper" way to manually update to it now?

BTW thanks a lot dosdude1 for all this! Being able to still use the latest version of macOS on my beloved MBP 5,1 (the last truly "Pro" Apple laptop imo) is awesome! They'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands!

1. Seems that I have also sleep problem in Mac Pro 3,1 HD 7950 (black screen after wake up).
2. My login window is red? After I install this #1590 login screen was correct in first boot.
3. Can I convert third party ssd to APFS?

I've downloaded and tried the 2.3.2 version of dosdude1 patch and I still be the same problem. Is there any way to see a persistent log that not disappear every time it crashes?

Make sure the name of your USB drive doesn't contain any weird characters, and also ensure the path to the High Sierra Installer app doesn't contain any weird characters (such as accents, ñ, é, etc). Also ensure you're logged in as an administrator on your Mac.

3. I boot my Mac from installation usb. Then I convert my ssd to APFS. Now it wont boot? It boots directly to recovery partition.

I've installed High Sierra on a MacBook Pro Mid-2009 17" (macbookpro5,2) using macOS High Sierra Patcher 2.3.1. Kudos to @dosdude1 for the tool - it's nicely designed and extremely easy to use.

So far, everything works as you would expect on a supported machine, except for sleep: If I close the macbook's lid, it obviously doesn't go to sleep. Apparently, just the display's backlight is turned off and the (in case of sleep) normally pulsing LED remains permanently on. If the lid is re-opened, the LED is turned off again and the display's backlight is returning at some point (it's often necessary to either press some keys or to remove the power cord from the machine to get the display into a lightened state again).

I'm currently a bit unsure whether that behaviour is owed to the fact that I'm on an unsupported machine or if it's a bug generally affecting older, also supported MacBook Pros, because the dozens of reports of such problems in Apple's own forums would suggest it's the latter and you're actually not better off with a supported machine.

Further general drawbacks of High Sierra I've noticed so far:
- GfxCardStatus, the tool to switch from integrated to discrete graphics, is no longer working, no matter which fork and version I try (1,2). Any helpful advice on that would be highly appreciated.
- iTunes 12.6.2, which I'd like to keep for it's ability to browse the iOS App Store, is throwing a -45076 error on launch and is usually closed immediately after acknowledging the error dialogue.

Is it safe to enable FileVault on a APFS system volume now? Reading the thread it seems there were problems at boot but were they fixed?

If it isn’t then I guess I’ll reformat and reinstall, I value encryption more than the possible advantages of the new filesystem...

No, the current APFS booting implementation does not support encrypted volumes.

Hello! I really thank to Collin for his valuable effort because I use to old Mac (MBP mid-2009 13 and a iMac 24 2009), and I had the opportunity to use these machines with the latest software.

I think he deserves to receive a donation for his work, even if it is a single dollar or single euro. I am from Portugal, and donated him aprox. 5 euros, and I think it is not to much. These old machines are update, and we can still work with them.

Though, today I have a problem. I installed High Sierra Beta and the latest version is 17A360A. I have been prompted to install the latest beta version. The final version has been launched by 25th September. I have been in trouble because, although I have installed the patch updater, Apple does not allow me to update for beta version 17A362A (GM version), or the High Sierra version.

I ask Collin (dosdude), how can I solve this. Do I have to re-install the OS High Sierra, downloading the latest version, and the use the Install patch with version 2.3.2 ?

Thanks a lot!

Yeah, you'll need to re-do the process using the latest version of macOS High Sierra Patcher. After creating your USB drive, just boot from it and install to the volume containing the beta, and it'll do an upgrade, leaving all your contents in tact.

it is not needed to make the macOS Post install again right?

A 2009 Mac Pro? That's a Mac Pro 4,1. These Mac Pros can be flashed to 5,1 which are officially supported and can run Sierra and High Sierra. Do that and you won't need to mess around witch patched installers and post-install patches, it'll work out of the box, including natively booting from APFS volumes (you'll get a firmware update from Apple, like all other officially supported machines).

WHAT? I wasn't aware of this! Thanks for sharing!

I just made sure I had the latest firmware on my 2009 Mac Pro (MP41.0081.B07) and then got the 1.5 firmware for the 2010 5,1 Mac Pro model at https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321?locale=en_US and then got this version of the 2009 to 2010 firmware utility https://github.com/pigsyn/MacProFirmwareToolUpdate and it upgraded the firmware to the 2010 5,1 firmware fine.

I downloaded High Sierra from the App Store and when it downloaded it came up and said I needed another firmware upgrade as another poster said and it did it successfully as well. Installed High Sierra and everything is fine so far! Putting this in from the computer right now.

Only hardware differences I have are two nvidia 120 cards and my main HD is a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB. It also converted the drive to APFS automatically too.

Glad I came across this!

Shame on Apple for making these machines obsolete when they run the software perfectly fine! Yea I upgraded to an SSD, but still! Apple could have left some of these machines on the supported list!

Anyone know whether the iMac 9,1 airport card supports this?
Works fine on my iMac 9,1
[doublepost=1506555085][/doublepost]After quite some time I have now re-installed 10.13 with the latest patches and I have a question...

How do the backlight patches work for the iMac 9,1?

On a positive note, they are working now. You can control the backlight from the keys and the slider in Preferences.

However, on the negative side: Sleep/adjusting color/nightshift resets the backlight to the lowest level and you have to turn it back up again.

Not a huge inconvenience, and better than using an app (even the one I wrote), but still a little annoying.

You need to BOOT off the install drive, not run the installer app from there.

An idiot is me; thanks. Works spectacularly, except waking sleep causes it to black screen of death. 2009 Mac Pro, GT120 (temporarily), 27” Cinema Display. I’ll see if anyone else has sleep issues.

For the mid 2009 MacBook 5,2; the brightness I can get through with using the menu bar addition, but do the volume buttons really not change the volume? I was hoping to get the buttons fixed in Sierra for brightness, but that I can live with since I don't see any fixes. But volume? I don't know...

Both of those things have been fixed. Make sure you've used the Patch Updater to install the latest patches.

I can confirm that a nVidia GTX 680 works with 17A362a giving Metal support and no red screens without needing to modify the four kexts related to the Radeon AMD3000 drivers. I have also not installed the nVidia Web drivers or CUDA yet.
This was an MSI GTX 680 that I flashed to Mac efi using a rom from the Netkas site. it shows the Apple boot screen at boot and seems to behave correctly. I'll test some more but so far no apparent problems.
Note that the Metal support shows as v2, which is for Metal, but this is a System Information glitch and it should be v3—indicating Metal 2. Apple will be fixing this glitch soon.
I bought this card S/H for $70—a deal.

I read that there is a new upgrade to 10.13.1 1 but its not appearing in my App Store on a unsupported MacPro 3,1 who was successfully upgraded to 10.13 via dosdude1 patch.

Do we have to run the old swuppatch ??????? Thanks for the info

There is no such thing as a mid 2009 MacBook5,2. Furthermore, there are issues with MacBook5,2. Do you mean mid-2009 MacBookPro5,2?

That 10.3.1 is a beta. You won’t see it as an update until it is non-beta.
