...and so what’s the best use for the Highpoint Card? For a boot drive or a media/files and folders drive? I’m reading that it’s a waste putting a boot drive on there...

It depends on your needs or wants. It boots faster than an Apple SSUBX drive, and as @tsialex says, it has 4 drive slots so you can literally use it for everything. I hate using anything connected to my slow SATA2 ports. Dramatic difference.

I think we can sum up our experiences with this latest update in one word supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!

Thank you @tsialex for sharing this update with us, @crjackson2134 for harassing Apple on adding NVMe support regardless of whether or not it was the reason they did, @handheldgames for letting us catch the early bus with the SSD7101A and Apple for not forgetting about their cMP user base.

I suspect NVMe hardware prices are going to increase from here. Take it from an early adopter, the upgrade is well worth it!

Edit: Forgot to thank Apple too.. just in case they are monitoring these threads.

This one looks pretty sinister. I like it.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N78XZCH/

Even though I never look at the back of my cMP (and it's butted up against a wall to boot), the black slot cover on that thing would slowly eat away at me.

I've got a generic Lycom DT-120 now but I've got my eye on the KyroM.2 Evo. It's got a gaudy LED lightshow on it but apparently there's a switch to turn it off.

Why would you expect NVMe prices to go up from here? They've been on a continuous trend downwards. Why wouldn't they keep going down?

New demand pool = uptick in prices

As soon as suppliers/sellers find out that nvme is now natively supported on the cMP 5,1 or notice an uptick in demand, they'll bump their nvme hardware prices. I don't know exactly how many 5,1s or converted 4,1s to 5,1s are out there but I am sure there are a lot.

Retailing for $214 on NewEgg

2 slots with half the lanes as the HighPoint/PLX PEX8747 .. not sure if it is supported by the mac pro so someone needs to order and test it.

Not sure if this card will work with PCIe 2.0, someone will need to bite the bullet.

Anandtech has a article about the PCIe switch used by this card https://www.anandtech.com/show/13022/asmedia-preps-asm2824-pcie-30-switch

I believe it should as the HighPoint card was designed for PCIe 3.0 but is working on our PCIe 2.0 boards. Looking again at the specs, it supports Non-BiFurcation and Bifurcation motherboards so there's a very good chance that it will work in cMPs although I am not sure how it will interact with or if it will impact other cards.

Looking at a close-up photo of the pcie card, it appears to be a cheaper alternative to the HighPoint and Amfeltec cards as it doesn't look to be well built.

PLX one has support for PCIe 2.0 on the documentation, this ASMedia ASM2824 only cites PCIe 3.0 - so my warning.

I doubt cMP users will create any amount of demand that would affect the market. Macs in general are a small percentage of the market. cMPs are a small percentage of total Macs. A small percentage of cMP users will apply the update, at least right away. A small percentage of those will go out and buy a new NVMe drive.

One thing for sure, prices of MP51 will not continue to decrease as they have been before Mojave improvements. ;)
