In fairness, I think that was just one user, and he used a Nitro, not a Pulse. I think probably most cMP users with the 580 are using the generic framebuffer and no consistent reports of problems related to it.

That’s why I said most likely irrelevant, but worth to try.

I used a RX 580 Nitro+ with a successful Mojave upgrade, however I do not recommend the Nitro+ since the backplate of the card does not fit in the bottom slot and it's really exaggerated by the screws with springs that protrude from it. If installed in bottom slot it would push the screws against the cpu cage and push the heatsink away from the cards GPU and memory not to mention put force on the motherboard slot. I changed to some lower profile screws with small spring/lock washers to fix the physical fit problem and managed to fit it (safely I hope), I'd buy the pulse if I could do it over again. My slots are all full but if you have dual pci slots with space to move up one and have it occupy two or three slots from there it might be fine. Again thanks tsialex for post #1!

Whilst there have been reports of some GPUs being hit and miss, I can confirm that my Sapphire OC Radeon RX470 4GB. HDMI/Triple DP UEFI appears to be working perfectly.
Let me now what other info you need about it if any.

Metal: Supported, feature set macOS GPUFamily2 v1

1) Did you updated your firmware to 5,1?

2) If your GTX770 works with the Apple native driver, yes. If you have to install the NVIDIA WEB drivers, you have to wait for the release.

Hi all,
I have an early 2009 mac pro 5.1 with dual quad core xeon 2.26, 32gb ram & NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB running High Sierra at the moment. Boot ROM Version: MP51.0084.B00 / SMC Version (system): 1.39f5 / SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f5

I would like to install Mojave but as I understand it I would have to replace the GPU and not sure if it is worth it.

1. 100% can't install Mojave without GPU upgrade?
2. Would Mojave run without any issues on this system if i upgraded only the GPU and is it worth it?

Thank you.

Not with Apple installer, you will have to use dosdude1 patcher

Yes, will run better than 10.13.6 with your GT120.

You can get an Apple recommended MSI RX-560 4GB for around $90~100 on eBay, less for other models, but $10 or $20 less and with half the video ram…

1. Hacks might make it technically possible, but it would not be a good experience.
2. Yes, Mojave runs quite well on the cMP. You didn't mention what kind of drive you're booting from but as long as it's an SSD you should notice pretty good performance.

Keep your eyes out for the MSI Gaming Radeon RX 560. You can get it for under $150 (maybe less on sale this holiday season) and it doesn't require any hassle to install.

I just tried "dosdude1 patcher" and it says "This machine is natively supported by Mojave; you do not need to use this patch" but when i tried the regular Mojave install it wouldn't install because I do not have Metal GPU.
Will def look into the gpu's to replace

I might try the hack just to see if I like it before upgrading the gpu.

That's because Dosdude1's patcher is designed for Macs which Apple has totally dropped from macOS support. The 2010/12 Mac Pro is supported, but only with a Metal GPU. You still need to use dosdude1's patcher (ignore the message about it being natively supported) to make a bootable USB installer. Then boot from that. It bypasses the "checks" Apple does to verify the Mac is compatible.

I highly advise you to do this experiment on a separate hard drive apart from your normal boot drive.

Awesome, I am installing on a seperate ssd. Also, my current Boot ROM Version is MP51.0084.B00 on High Sierra 10.13.3 do I need to try and update that to MP51.0089.B00 if I can before installing Mojave?

Yes you should, although Mojave wants you to be on 138.0.0.0.0 (the successor firmware to MP51.0089.B00) before installing Mojave. I have no idea if dosdude1's patcher bypasses that check also--probably does.

It will be difficult for you to upgrade to the 138.0.0.0.0 firmware without replacing your GPU with a Metal-capable one though.

Yeah, I had trouble w/ this. I wanted to update just the firmware on a couple of machines using original GPUs like GT 120 and HD 5770. I generated the dosdude installer, but that never prompted me to do the firmware update, so I bailed...

Buy one of the RX 560 that are confirmed working, like this one USED PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 560 4GB

Thanks, Alex. Yeah, I know I can certainly buy a cheap supported card like that, and probably will buy a couple in the future anyway. For the moment, the cheapest method would be just to temporarily move my RX 580 to these other couple of systems for the quick firmware update. However, I like to have repeatable "solutions" in situations like this for future use, so I was interested in finding a way to bypass the Metal GPU test and still proceed w/ firmware updating. No biggie tho...just something I wanted to find a way to do, not something essential.

Only way that I know that is safe is reconstructing BootROMs, everything else is force flashing with hidden options etc.

I'm new here, but thought that some of you might be interested in the below pic. Not Photoshopped. It really is macOS Mojave running with the stock Radeon HD 5770 GPU installed in a mid-2010 Mac Pro 5,1.
Yes, we know almost any Mac EFI UGA GPU can boot Mojave and display. However, the installer won’t run with this GPU. They are installed on another system, or with another GPU, then boot with this card.
I must be the exception, but I can NOT boot into Mojave with an HD 5770 installed (not connected to any monitor) with a MSI RX-560 card installed. I've wanted to do this for weeks just so I could get a boot screen if I needed one, but it has never worked.

I never tried booting into Mojave with ONLY an HD 5770 installed. Maybe that works - I don't know.

Mojave with a HD5770 installed boots without acceleration, so it "works" but you can't work. :p
Not on my machine. I've tried it 3 or 4 separate times because I put the 5770 back in and then out about that many separate times and tried it each time. But as I said, each time with an RX-560 also installed, and Mojave won't boot.

I had no intention of using the 5770 with Mojave. I just wanted it there so I could later switch video monitor cables and option-boot into the boot manager screen when I wanted it. So I don't care how slow it would be with Mojave because I would never use it with Mojave.

I've tested 3 cards, HD 5770/5780/6870, all booted the Mojave DP that I was testing at the time but without any acceleration, all installed alone into my Mac Pro. I think @crjackson2134 tested his original GPU too, if I remember correctly.

Did you have another non-EFI card (like the RX-560) ALSO installed at the same time? That was my situation. It would not boot.

Only one card installed, did not test this scenario since all my cards except HD 5770 needs or two 6pin power inputs or one 6pin and one 8pin.

So maybe that is the difference. Maybe with only the 5770 card it would work. But since I would never use it that way I never tried it with only a 5770 installed. BTW, I have two 5770's, years apart, and have tried both.

Next time I have the PCI cage open for something else I will try the 5770 only just to find out.

I have asked on this site and elsewhere a couple times if anyone was able to boot Mojave with BOTH a 5770 and non-EFI Metal card installed, and no one has replied to me that they could. (I can boot into HS and Windows with both cards installed).
