Actually you can run the installer with full graphics support for mojave and it gets weird.

So let me explain.

I have a Mac Pro 5,1
8 gigs of ram
HD radeon 4870 512 megs
1tb hard drive.

running mojave.
with full graphics acceleration

and don't ask me how it just worked on its own.

I'm still studying why it likes the hd radeon 4870 and not the 5000 series. weird as heck

You did a dosdude1 Mojave Patcher install with a supported Mac, this is not what we want to do here - we have fully supported Macs.

dosdude1 hacked installs have acceleration with some GPUs (HD 4870 is one that can have it while HD5770/5870/6870 don't work at all) but will not run anything that requires METAL.

I think my eyes are bleeding from all the reading. Great info here and greatly appreciated. I do have a question that I cant seem to find the answer for. I have a 4,1 flashed to a 5,1 running High Sierra. I would like to get 140.000 boot rom from the Mojave install but Im not wanting to run Mohave, just HS. Can this be done with the GT120 card or do I need to find a supported " metal" card. Thanks again

First post talks about it, you can’t upgrade from MP51.0089.B00 to 1xx.0.0.0.0 firmwares without a METAL supported GPU. Firmware upgrade process requires a METAL supported GPU.

First I want to thank you for the excellent quality of information! Thank you very much!

I’ve made the transition to Mojave 10.14.4 without any problem!

(MacPro 8 cores 5.1, Nvidea QUADRO K5000 for Mac, 32 GB RAM, Samsung 860 EVO. Firmware 141.0.0.0.0)

I'm thinking of selling my old original ATI RADEON HD 5770 Apple MacPro 5.1.

I think, from now, all future firmware updates can be done with my Nvidea Quatro K5000 For Mac, right?

What do you guys think? Can I sell my old Video Card? Is it safe?

A big thank you and shout-out to tsialex for starting this thread with detailed instructions. Now running Mojave on my 5,1 Mac Pro with the Sapphire Radeon RX580 Pulse and everything running great so far. Even got a few little performance boosts here and there.

I'm sure many are looking at either 4,1 (flashed) or 5,1 in the refurb/second hand market to to get a more upgradable Mac to last them at least another couple of years. Likewise for current users looking to extend the lifespan of their trusty beast.

I have strong doubts Apple will ever make a Mac this user serviceable again. Right now; popping in a RX580 and doing the firmware upgrades was the best value for that money I could get to enjoy this machine another couple (hopefully) years.

I neglected to thank tsialex and all the contributors on this thread for their assistance and information. My 2009 is also running Mojave smoothly. The next thing for me is to get continuity and hand off working. My pockets are not deep enough for a osxwifi solution so I think I'll go the BT dongle route. I'm trying to digest those threads now...

You should hang onto it for use as a diagnostic tool that may be needed at some point.
Thank you so much for your answer!

Just for my learning, could you elaborate better what types of diagnostics I can only do with ATI RADEON HD 5770? My Nvidea QUADRO K5000 for Mac has EFI as well.

O think 5770 will not work properly on Mojave to make diagnostics. I know it will work on Mojave but not very well ... Unless I reinstall the High Sierra ... Am I wrong?

If it's not taking to much of your time, can you elaborate a little more about it?

Thank you!

Apple original ATI HD 5770 will only be useful for the complete AHT tests. If you already have a GPU with pre-boot configuration support (aka Mac EFI) you can do everything else.

A card with pre-boot configuration support have:
  • Single user support,
  • Verbose boot,
  • AHT support (except the GPU test itself)
  • EFI shell access,
  • Startup Manager, the new name for the BootPicker/BootSelector,
  • FileVault support (for macOS versions before Mojave).

Hi Tsialex!

I do not want to be off topic but this information can help someone in the future...

I was able to make the Apple Hardware Test with the Nvidea Quadro K5000 for Mac using the 2nd Apple DVD that came with myMacPro (Restart with the "D" key pressed)!

I did the complete/extended test flawless!

The only thing is that the name of the video card did not appear on the test profile page ...

Pics attached!

Will I even need the old ATI 5770?

What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

Read the thread, there are various posts about difficulties with Firmware Programming mode. You have to get it right and do the two BootROM upgrades needed.

You need to update first to 10.13.6 with firmware MP51.089.B00. You can use the 5770 for that.
To update to Mojave, you'll have to install a METAL capable card. The 5770 won't work for Mojave.
See the first post of this thread.

Same upgrade method as described in the first post, no change whatsoever.

I'm troubleshooting this now as I am having the same issue. Using a Vega FE. After getting the prompt to do firmware and holding the button till the lights flash and long beep, the screen just remain black indefinitely. For all previous 1.xx. firmware updates before, it would update fine as usual. I've left my machine on this morning on the black screen and will see if it needs time.
