I have tomtom but am dissapointed at how un polished and un apple it looks. The Magellan app looks like it was designed by apple and generally looks superb.

When is it coming to Australia though?

Can you use it just as a speed limit and speed/red light camera warning system?

What is the startup time to load this app on the 3G and the 3GS?

Hi Aluren,

From my test trials, the average startup time was 7-9 secs for the 3GS and 17-19 secs for the 3G. It was based from selecting the Magellan icon until it found the current location.

Thank You,
Maggie

Hi Needthephone,

Currently, we do not know the exact release dates for Australia. However, when I find out, I will let you know as soon as possible.

The app will warn you when are speeding. However, it does not have warnings for speed cameras.

Thank you,
Maggie

Hi All,

We are going to be giving out free apps soon! Please stay tune for further notice!

Thank You,
maggie

Maggie, thanks for the updates and support. If we purchase the app, do we get updated maps in the future or is that something we'll need to buy later?

How will you be distributing these free apps? Will you be giving out promo codes for your app? I currently own both the tomtom and Navigon apps and like them both but yours looks very impressive as well. I would love a chance to try it out. :)

Hi TastyChicken,

That's a very good question. Usually we do charge for map updates in our Personal Navigation Device (PND) products; however, we are uncertain for the Iphone app because it was just released.

Thank You,
Maggie

Anyone have a chance to compare Roadmate with the other apps like Navigon? I hadn't heard good things about Magellan's standalone GPS devices, but then again I may have just been surrounded by disgruntled Magellan users, I dunno. :D

I bought this app 2 days ago, and i absolutely love it (not just saying that cuz maggie is listening hehe). Anyways, I think its the best GPS app for the iphone out there right now and yes I tried out Navigon's, TomTom's, G-Map, etc etc. Mostly through friends'

The main difference between Magellan vs Navigon vs most other apps out, is the extra features it has. I dont know all of the features yet considering I only had it for 2 days, but the one feature that stands out the most is the "One Touch" feature. I could customize and edit my favorite destinations, and just navigate via one touch. For example, I set up my work, restaurants, school addresses, etc. on it, so when i want to change my route from a lost location, its there. Also, I really like the freedom to browse the map while navigating unlike dumb tomtom's app where it takes me back to the menu when you touch the map...ARGH! Another feature I like is the 3D setting, I live in NYC so when I pass by the empire state building, there actually a 3D model of it lol...Pretty cool

Anyways, I thought it's a great app. Even though it cost more than some of the others, there is a REASON! YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!

Now I am just waiting on the car kit...Maggie do you have the exact date?

Glad to hear you live in the city, since that's my area too. It's one of the reasons I'm anxiously awaiting to see how live traffic will work with Magellan.

Other than the features, how does the routing work out for you? They make sense and seem straightforward or does it get weird on you?

Oh and a question for Maggie: does the app allow you to entire coordinates as a destination too?

Will this work with a 1st gen iPod touch?

On Amazon it says:
Compatibility: iPod touch 2G, 3G; iPhone 3G, 3Gs

Kind of a bummer since I was going to upgrade my iPod and use the old 1G for car use only. :(

Hi LincolnsiPod,

I am sorry but our system does not allow entry of map coordinates (longitude/latitude), just addresses, intersections, and POIs.

Thank you,
Maggie

Hi Sparrky,

We haven't tested the 1st Gen iPhone yet. However, it should work with the car kit coming out, but I cannot guarantee anything yet. I will keep you posted.

Thank You,
Maggie

Hi Battleonmac,

I am glad you like our app! :) There is no official release date yet. Sorry!

Thank you,

Magellan Premium Car Kit

Hi Maggie,

Thanks for starting this thread.

I have both the TomTom and Navigon apps but have not tried the Magellan app yet. I have the TomTom iPhone Car kit and like it except for having to take off the iPhone case each time I put it into the cradle. Due to that fact I have ordered the Magellan Premium car kit from Amazon and am looking forward to trying it out. A suggestion for future updates of the Premium car kit would be the ability to have the phone call audio go through the aux output instead of the car kit speaker. The TomTom car kit does not allow for this and sometimes at high speeds you cannot here the other end of the phone call.

I like the Magellan GUI look compared to the TomTom and Navigon apps.

Hi EDH667,

Thank you for your support and feedback. :) I will be sure to forward your suggestions to R&Q.

Maggie,

I have a few feedback comments but before i do, is there anyway to avoid a part of a route or roadblock. For instance, today it took me to an exit that was recently closed. I wanted to be able to choose to avoid that part of the route.

Also, is it really as tedious as it seems to get back to the main navi screen? If i am navigating, and choose menu and then go into a couple other menus, i have to hit the back button 7,8 times until im all the way back to the traveling route?

much thanks

Hi dhy8386

I do apologize for the inconvenience, and I will personally look into it for you. I will let you know after the weekend.

Thank You,

Hi All,

We here at Magellan would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! And we would like to celebrate by giving out TWO FREE MAGELLAN APPS for Macrumors' members ONLY! To qualify, you would need to answer the questions below and pm them to me. Then we will randomly select the winners (assuming all the answers are correct). We would ask the winners for their feedbacks on our application.

The last day to submit your answers is on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 11:59pm (PST)! NO EXCEPTIONS! We will announce the winners sometime next week! Good Luck and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Questions:

1) Who was the first company to offer a portable navigation device with voice command?

2) What historical monument is at this location? Latitude: 40°68′92"N Longitude: 74°04′45"W

3) When did our Magellan Roadmate 2010 application for the iPhone released?

4) True or False: The Magellan Car Kit turns the iPod Touch into a GPS Navigator.

5) What year was the first Thanksgiving?

Hi Maggie,

Since I am a new member, I am not able to PM you yet (not until after 5 posts). Do you have an alternate email to send you the answers?

I made some other posts and was able to send you a PM.

Thanks.

contest entry submitted, the thanksgiving question can technically have 4 different answers..

I have a dedicated GPS unit. Often would like one for my phone, for those times I was in someone else's car. Still on the fence about buying one just for other times though.

does it have options for GeoCaching?

thanks!!

Hi lemonademaker,

I am sorry, but it does not. Geocaching is usually only available for outdoor activities (fishing, hiking, camping).

Thank You,
Maggie

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your participation! We had a great number of interest. I will be announcing the winners either on Wednesday or Thursday! Please check back soon!

Thank You,
Maggie
