Magellan Roadmate on an iPhone 3G

I am curious about others' experience on a 3G. Specifically, Magellan themselves recommends on the download page not to use the app in 2D mode on 3G phones. Anyone care to share their experience?

I was lucky enough to win their giveaway recently, and took the app for a test using my 3G and so far it hasn't been a pleasant turn by turn experience. I'm still waiting for further updates that would hopefully speed the app for 3G users as well. I'm assuming this could all be solved if you used a 3GS but currently my upgrade status with AT&T won't let me buy it with a discount.

Basically, I used CoPilot before, using a simple car mount with a clear view of the sky inside my car, and comparing the start up of CoPilot VS Magellan, CoPilot won. It took that timer(clock) thing close to 17seconds before it could fully open the app. Take note there's two loading screens that they show and I'm referring to the second one.

Navigating was not so good. My first run was to a local McDonald's and it can't even locate me properly on a local highway. I was driving a mere 30-35mph during that time, and sometimes on the app it shows I still have to turn but in reality my car already did the turn and was 50 ft away from the turning point suggested. I did however seen some improvements when I took an Interstate Highway, and it could lead me to the exits exactly, I don't know if speed was a factor (though their speed function in the app is off too)

Like someone mentioned, the "save location and close" screen is quite a bit annoying, especially when you drove past by your final destination and still needed directions, but due to the fact that the app thinks you reached your destination and have that "save location and close" screen, you won't get any directions anymore until you close that window and start all over again.

Addresses like someone posted still has a problem. My (contacts)friend's standardized address won't get accepted by the app, even though when I typed it in Magellan, the app showed me the same exact spelling of the address I have in my contacts.

I do however like the user interface of this app, graphics was really pleasant, the maps are updated compared to my previous TBT app. I also like how the app tells you where your final destination is (right or left side). If you want to use the Music Player (iPod) on a 3G, it won't run properly, either it will freeze or just lock up and you have to restart the app again.

I tweaked the app so it won't zoom in on turns, turned off WiFi and Bluetooth but still to some extent it can't pin point me directly especially in turns.

Some of these problems, like I said earlier can probably be solved if you use a 3GS, but if you want to use this app for a 3G, I'd suggest you wait first.

Maggie,

Do you have any idea of what the size of the ball mount on Premium Car Kit is? I know it's not a standard size, because the ball is definitely smaller than that of Garmin (I compared). Could you please find out the exact size?

I am looking for options for mounting the kit to my dash, because I want something that is moveable to prevent theft.

I was thinking something like the Magellan Beanbag Mount...

getProdImage.asp

...but I am looking for "slimmer" options, since the space on my dash is narrower than the beanbag mount.

I would like to try some sort of friction mount, like the Magellan RoadMate Portable Dash Mount since I can put one of the "finger" towards the front and the others towards the back.

Any insight as to whether or not this is feasible? Either way, please let me know ball mount size, as there are other options (RAM mounts, etc.). Thanks in advance! :D

A couple questions about GPS apps in general, and I guess, the Magellan app in particular.

- Is there an easy option to choose an alternate route from the one calculated by the software? With my TomTom gps unit, I often don't like the route it chooses, but it has a very easy option to Route Via where all I have to do is choose a city on the route I'd like to take. Do any iphone GPS apps have this option?

- Does Magellan or any app use the compass of the 3GS to show what direction you are currently heading? Not a deal breaker, but I like this feature of my TomTom unit.

Thanks!

can't speak to Magellan, but yes typically (and confirmed with Navigon MobileNavigator) you can choose an "interim destination" (same as Route Via) from a variety of choices incl. other city ... and yes, Navigon, has a compass in it's enhanced Pedestrian mode (not in car or other mode)

Thank you for the response. Would you say that the 'interim destination' is something you can fairly readily set while driving down the road or is it buried enough as to require serious attention? Too bad about the compass, I'd like that while driving.

Can anyone speak up as to if either of these features are available in the Magellan gps app?

i am able to do it, but not super easy ... buttons are small (german engineering), and it takes 5-8 taps depending on specific your search

zhenya,

The Magellan app does offer some alternative route options, that are viewable under the "routing options" map view. It shows you the different routes available, and different colored lines illustrating each...as well as the distance and driving time of each. This option is readily available through the turn list (on the map screen), which is fairly simple to adjust while driving IMHO (2-3 button taps). ;)

You can also create customized trips, much like andersonGPS stated (as a Route Via or Waypoint) to take you to various locations (editing the route preference along the way).

I am pretty sure the Magellan app utilizes the compass constantly, but I can't answer that with certainty. The reason I think this, is because when I have my phone on a horizontal plane, and rotate it...my map moves accordingly. Maggie will have to confirm/deny this for us though.

I hope this helps. :p

Thank you ShaneXman. I take it that even if Magellan does use the compass, it does not give a compass view on the screen?

Have you used other gps apps than the Magellan? If so, how do they compare in your opinion? How about compared to a stand-alone device? It's hard to believe that there is no guaranteed return policy for apps this expensive, so I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible. :)

Now that I actually look at it, it wasn't Magellan that changed direction as you rotate the phone around. I also have MotionX-GPS Drive, and that application utilizes the compass. The front of the arrow has what appears to be a headlight of sorts, and depending on what direction the phone is aimed, the headlight points that direction.

I just went outside and launched the Magellan app, and it did not detect my direction as I thought. In order for it to know the direction you are traveling, you actually need to be in motion. So to answer your question, no there isn't an on-screen compass with Magellan. Would be nice for future updates (Maggie?). :p

As mentioned above, I also have the MotionX navigation app, as well as the social navigation app called Waze. Magellan is my GO-TO navigation app, but I was considering purchasing the TomTom & Navigon apps while they are still on sale. I'm not sure if I am going to do it, it was just a thought I had while they were on sale. My intention on purchasing them would be to do a direct comparison, which I would post up for everyone to see. I considered even doing a video. However, even at the sale prices of $50 & $60, I'm still looking at over $100 for the two apps (more if I want the optional traffic). I even considered purchasing the Co-Pilot app as a less expensive option to compare with this apps. Decisions...decisions... ;)

Shane, if it makes you feel any better I purchased Navigon and TomTom at full price to do reviews. Sometimes I hate being a gadget geek.

That's awesome. Where's the review? I would love to check out what you said about them. Did you update the reviews to reflect the latest versions of each program, and what issues were resolved, etc.?

I'm still up in the air as to whether or not I am going to do it, but it's not out of the question. Cheers! :)

Hello,

I have a few questions for Maggie or anyone else who is familiar with this app.

1) Is there a 2D map mode?

2) Is it possible to move around the map by dragging your finger (like with google maps and other GPS navigation software)? My boyfriend's stand alone TomTom only allows you to zoom in and out, not move around the map to look at the area or look ahead at the rout. Navigon has this feature but it's completely useless because it automatically switches the orientation to north is up from up being the direction I'm going which changes where everything is located. If it is possible to move around the map, do Magellan also change the orientation?

3) Does Magellan announce what side of the street the destination is on? If so, does it announce the side of the street before you reach your destination? Navigon announces what side of the street my destination is on but only once I reach the destination and by then it's too late. I previously had VZ Navigator with Verizon and it always told me what side of the street the destination was on as soon as I turned on the street or when I got close to the destination but hadn't reach it yet.

4) Does Magellan have problems finding GPS signal? The reason I ask is because Navigon frequently fails to find the GPS signal even when other applications such as AT&T Navigator and Gokivo can which is frustrating.

5) Have people found that the voice on the Magellan app is loud enough when coming through the iphone speakers? Is it as loud as Navigon (which is loud enough for me)?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Yes, there is a 2D map mode, but we do not recommend using it with the iPhone 3G
  2. Yes, our App allows the user the freedom to browse nearby locations/streets by scrolling with your fingers
  3. Yes, our App informs the user ahead of time the side of the street the destination is on.
  4. GPS signal is mainly due to the built-in GPS chip in the iPhone. Signal strength may vary on location
  5. We haven't had any complaints on the loudness of our App. It seems like its loud enough for many users.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask.

Thank you,
Maggie

Hi Shane,

1. The ball diameter is 5/8”. The suction cup diameter is 2.25“. The PCK uses the same windshield mount that is used on all 2009-up Magellan PNDs. The PCK mount will work with a PND beanbag.

2. Yes, but it performance is slower than the newer iPhone models.

Thank you,
Maggie
