Maggie,

I am very excited to win a Magellan Roadmate 2010 App! Being one of the winners made my Christmas extra special. I'm looking forward to experiencing the application first hand.

Magellan is on the right track with your quick responses to questions about the application and Premium Car Kit. I haven't seen any comparable question and answer forum from your competition! Keep up the good work.

This might have already been answered, if so sorry. Will the Megallan cardholder also improve GPS with other GPS apps likes Navigon and TomTom? Just curious.

Yes,

According to the Magellan Website, "Works with any GPS navigation or location based app. The cradle is compatible with most GPS navigation apps. "

+1, this is definitely true...I tested it myself with the MotionX Drive app. :p

Hi Shane,

Thank you and great video!

Thank you,
Maggie

Maggie,

It was my pleasure. I am currently working on the in-car review, and I will most likely be posting it up tomorrow for all to see. Thank you so very much for everything. I hope your Holiday week/weekend is treating you well thus far. We'll talk soon. :)

ShaneXman,

Thanks for posting the great video. I have a question that hasn't been answered yet. Once you have the cradle adjusted for your iPhone and case, are you able to attach and disengage the phone with one hand without re-adjusting the adjustment arm?

You got it bud! :D

I replied in the other thread, but I will reiterate here...

Yes, it's quite easy to place your phone in the cradle once it has been adjusted for your phone. You will see this in my in-car review video that I will be posting up tomorrow. ;)

I hope this helps. :p

Thread,

Well, I took the plunge today and downloaded Magellan GPS...I also have the other 2 main competitor applications as well. Man, this software is absolutely fantastic. Unlike the others, this software FEELS perfect on the iPhone and is easy to navigate while driving and most of all...easy to read with a quick glance while driving. This by far is the sexiest looking of GPS apps (imo of course), especially the maps. With a quick boot up and snappy lock-on to signal, I'm extremely happy with this. Continue to iron out bugs and most of all, add live traffic =) And ppllleeaasseee dont make it a monthly payment, one time fee or at worst, make it a yearly subscription. Love it.

Thanks for the update !

Maggie,

Thanks for the app update !

I do have more requests and some bug reports.

Make updates a smaller size.
Please make the arrows for next turn and associated text bigger.
Add Podcast/Book support.
Add AAA ratings and emergency help.
Free traffic and local info.
Add Google local search.
Add more Voices.
Add location based temperature (Nice to know if the road is frozen)
Add the option for the program to auto switch information posted on the lower left of screen Speed/Miles/Time/Direction/Elevation/Time Left/Distance. Bigger Text option.
Allow route change in turns list. Should be able to Block road and have program reroute.
Fix sound bugs related to auto adjust sound based on speed. Had problems where if you exceed the speed limit the sound stays low.
Play list bugs; at times repeats same song back to back not to sure if this was after a reroute or signal loss.

Thanks,

Rad :)

Christmas App Giveaway!!!

Maggie,

I was very happy to be one of the lucky winners of a Christmas App Giveaway. After using it for a couple of days, I must admit that I’m very impressed with the graphics, logical menu items, quick startup and fast GPS lock. I also like the ability to complete a route preview at various speeds. Magellan may have been a later entry with its navigation application, but you obviously have created a quality product. Magellan has become my favorite navigation application.

Comments on the App:

- Still too much lag. Needs to improve and be more snappy.

- "OneTouch" Menu has all those unnecessary "Assign" icons. Magellan needs to fix this and just place only one "Add" button in place of all those unused icons. Let the users be able to simply add more buttons than create a boatload of unused button that scroll all the way down. It's not logical.

- The big black screen asking you to save your car location and just stays put after you reach your destination is annoying. It's covering the whole map and needs to be TRANSPARENT as well as "time out" after a few seconds.

There are times when you may have missed your destination due to traffic and you still need to navigate around the area. That big black screen covering the map is not useful especially if I click "Okay" to save my car location. What if I choose to go around the block first finding for parking then it didn't correctly save the exact car location.

Build an option to press "OK" to save or "Re-Route" to let it know I'm circling around the block first especially if it's a big compound I'm going to. And don't let it be that opaque. Let it be transparent so the map is still visible.

- There has to be a short cut to save and retrieve your car location. I don't readily see it under the "OneTouch" menu. Can we have a specific "CAR" icon so we can easily save and retrieve location information on where we parked the car.

- Satellite GPS signal has to be built in and readily available just like other GPS apps as well as was available on stand-alone GPS devices. It is useful to note how strong the satellite signal is in our area. This should have been built in from the very first version.

- Kindly add more TTS voice options. I really don't like the current male and female voices. How about something more formal and British sounding like a Butler guiding you.

- iPhone Address Book integration is still an epic failure. It cannot read both US and Canada addresses unless you format it to it's specification which we will never know how it likes to read addresses. Google maps can read all my addresses perfectly. It can even detect the informal Canadian formatted address wherein the apartment precedes the street number. For example:

1234 Broadway Drive, Apt 12

can also be read by Google maps as

12 - 1234 Broadway Drive

It can intelligently decipher the street number and name from the above. Whereas Magellan can't even read addresses with a second line with an apartment number. It can't even read properly formatted USPS and CanadaPost addresses. What more addresses like these which are now accepted as the norm in Canada.

- How about defaulting the city based on the current location of the GPS? Must we have to enter and spell the city all over again. Majority of the time users are simply going around the same city.

It would be helpful to simply have the current city name filled out already based on where we are at the moment. If we need to enter another city or scroll thru the previous locations, then we will go thru it.

I hope these suggestions are taken into serious consideration as I'm liking my Navigon iPhone app more and more and the way it is right now, I'll be using the Magellan Premium Car Kit paired with the Navigon. ;)

Can I remove the "Music Player" button from the main screen or is it stationary?

it's kind of funny i read your post and the one's by Sxmen and i find myself going... ahhh yup, yes, ahh yes that would be nice, yes that bugs me, yes etc....LOL
they definitely watch the forum with "maggie", and it seems like they get some great stuff for implementation to make 2010 the best gps out there...

Thanks, ShaneXman and lemonademaker for the support. I'm glad others are finding my thoughts on how to make the app better also useful. I can only hope Maggie and Magellan listens to our comments so they can strive to become the number 1 GPS iPhone app.

I usually beta test software apps for the Mac enviroment and I also test products for an online retailer. So my train of thought is immediately to scrutinize it and how to further improve it to benefit us customers for actual use versus what was on the drawing board of the developer.

+1 here

I completely agree with the said comments above. I'm still kinda tweaking the app to its optimal performance so it won't be too much lag on a 3G, which is the iPhone I'm using. Even CoPilot is snappier than this app on a 3G.

Maggie,

Let me start off by saying that Magellan has done a fantastic job with this app, especially considering we are still on "Version: 1.0". This leaves me VERY hopeful and excited that this already great app will get even better, especially with the user feedback and suggestions posted here. Overall, this is a good app, with the potential to be a GREAT app! Nice job Magellan, keep up the good work. The user interface and overall structure is exceptionally laid out and aesthetically pleasing. However, this app most definitely does not go without its faults, but at this present time I will not penalize Magellan for issues that I believe/hope will be resolved.

Here are my qualms, which I would LOVE for you to pass on and take into consideration for future updates…

1) TRAFFIC! Not much else to be said here, but I think traffic integration is a must....preferably free. However, if it will be a charge, make it a one-time charge (not monthly/yearly).

2) All traditional navigation POI databases leave something to be desired, and hopefully Magellan doesn't overlook this very blatant weakness. It would definitely behoove them to integrate Google's Local Search, which allows users to enter simple search terms (as they would in Google or Google Maps). This would also be a step in the right direction to fend off the attack of the FREE "Google Maps Navigation" that has reared its ugly head. It appears that Navigon will be incorporating this feature, so I’d suggest Magellan do the same.

3) When attempting to use an address from my Contacts, I am often prompted with a message that states “No useable address found”. This is bothersome because if I type the address in manually, it uses it just fine. I’d have to imagine this is a software issue, and should be resolved fairly quickly and easily.

4) The TTS feature could also be more expansive. Often times it won’t say the street name, but rather make a general statement or direction.

5) The speed is VERY inaccurate, and I don’t believe it’s even been close to being correct since I got it. It jumps around constantly, and never locks onto my exact speed.

6) When playing music while navigating, the audio interruptions are quite abrupt and choppy. A fade out/in would be nice, and the music should pause for the duration of any given direction…rather than resuming the music only to cut off the directional statement.

7) The speed limit notification sign should be displayed at all times, not just when you are speeding (even if speeding notifications are turned off).

8) I have always used Garmin in the past, and have appreciated its repetitive nature with regards to keeping you on track. The Magellan seems to keep quiet while on long freeway stints, whereas the Garmin would confirm (verbally) that you should stay on the appropriate freeway. More frequent directions (at interchanges, etc.) would be a welcome change.

9) You can’t zoom out very far when in 3D+ mode. If you want to explore the map, you have to change it to 2D to zoom out to a useable/explorable distance.

10) Garmin also has an "Information Page" of sorts, which displays a number of trip related items (i.e. current speed, top speed, current trip distance, overall distance, duration of trip, etc.), which I often miss looking at on one screen.

11) Although the route calculations are fairly quick outdoors, it can take some time to get a satellite lock while indoors, around building, trees, etc. Why can’t “triangulation” (like Google Maps Navigation” be utilized to obtain a rough location lock, which would enable quicker overall functionality.

The iPhone is constantly (or almost constantly) connected to the internet, so why not take full advantage of it?!

...and most importantly, PLEASE keep all future updates FREE. We (the Magellan customers) vested a good amount of money into this app, and we would love to continue using your products and providing useful feedback for future product development, but there's definitely a point of diminishing returns...where products such as Google Map/Google Maps Navigation will begin to suffice. I also do not want to regret going the Magellan route, when there were definitely other viable options out there who have already stated all future updates will be FREE.

Thanks for listening. Cheers! :)

Sincerely,

Shane :D

Maggie,

Please don't forget to pass my thoughts/suggestions on as well. Hopefully our suggestions will be implemented for the next update. ;)

I definitely agree with your assessment, Shane. It still very much applies to the current 1.10 version.

- Traffic integration as you mentioned in point #1 is a must free feature these days for GPS devices, but I don't know how this can be implemented without a supplied traffic antenna for the Premium Car Kit. But with the data connection the iPhone has, traffic feed could be done via this route.

And while we're on the data connection for the iPhone, as you said we might as well make use of the internet connectivity within the Magellan app like being able to search for the most current POI within the area the way we are able to search for businesses and addresses with the free Google Maps app.

- Per your point #7, an option to display the speed limit with the ability to hide would be helpful if the user is after screen real estate.

the iPhone data connection is the only way to go ... and the current method for Navigon  the biggest benefit is that you aren't limited by broadcast radio antennae (30-60miles depending on terrain) ... and in my case, being able to assess alternate routing options before entering a metro market, say Chicago, is a must.

s/b interesting to see how M & TT offer traffic and other services - i am sure there are heated discussions ensuing at corporate :p

Hello,

I have a few questions for Maggie or anyone else who is familiar with this app.

1) Is there a 2D map mode?

2) Is it possible to move around the map by dragging your finger (like with google maps and other GPS navigation software)? My boyfriend's stand alone TomTom only allows you to zoom in and out, not move around the map to look at the area or look ahead at the rout. Navigon has this feature but it's completely useless because it automatically switches the orientation to north is up from up being the direction I'm going which changes where everything is located. If it is possible to move around the map, do Magellan also change the orientation?

3) Does Magellan announce what side of the street the destination is on? If so, does it announce the side of the street before you reach your destination? Navigon announces what side of the street my destination is on but only once I reach the destination and by then it's too late. I previously had VZ Navigator with Verizon and it always told me what side of the street the destination was on as soon as I turned on the street or when I got close to the destination but hadn't reach it yet.

4) Does Magellan have problems finding GPS signal? The reason I ask is because Navigon frequently fails to find the GPS signal even when other applications such as AT&T Navigator and Gokivo can which is frustrating.

5) Have people found that the voice on the Magellan app is loud enough when coming through the iphone speakers? Is it as loud as Navigon (which is loud enough for me)?

Thanks in advance.

Magellan Intros Premium GPS Car Kit for iPhone, iPod touch

December 21st, 2009 at 5:05 PM - iPhone by Brad Cook

Magellan on Monday introduced a premium GPS car kit for iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch. It includes a built-in GPS receiver, an amplified speaker, a noise-canceling microphone, and Bluetooth for hands-free phone calls and turn-by-turn directions. It works with all navigation applications, including Magellan’s RoadMate for iPhone.

The mounting kit works with most silicone skins and hard shell cases, and it rotates to accommodate portrait or landscape views, with the ability to keep the device’s battery charged through the vehicle’s power outlet.

The kit sells for US$129.99 and is available now for pre-order. It will ship on Jan. 7, 2010.
