I don’t know. I woke up and saw it a few hours later. Now I understand how dangerous that sounds.
I wouldn't use it again and take it to Apple. To me that's the coil getting too hot and burning through the white. Not much else would cause that.

I will return it to Bol.com as I bought it there and they want the item back. But I think you are fully right. Definitely won’t use it again.

I bought a new one from Apple. Will arrive on November 17.

Does it charge your 11 pro max well? Multiple reviews online said that the magsafe charger charges everything painfully slow except the 12 lineups, charging the other phones at around 1W.
I believe the 11 Pro will only charge at 7.5 watts.

Don’t understand the great attraction to wireless charging when wired is so much safer and efficient. You can even use the phone while charging.
That’s why they like MagSafe - you can use it while it charges. But I agree about wired being more efficient.

Yes, I have been using the new 20W charger that Apple released, together with the MagSafe charger. So I assume it is fast charging.
But aren't you using an 11 Pro Max, I thought you can't achieve the full 15W fast charging with the MagSafe charger unless you have a 12?

I don’t really mind that. It should be limited at 7.5W then. I just used the new 20W charger as soon as I got it, because I’ve put the other 18W charger in the box of my iPhone 11 Pro Max, so I wouldn’t forget to include it when I sell my iPhone 11 Pro Max.

But I don’t think that should have caused the trouble.

Yes, that's why I asked. 7.5W is not considered fast charging, that's standard Qi charging speed. Only 15W is considered fast for MagSafe. So technically speaking you are not fast charging, and that's is not the cause of your discoloration.

What exactly do you mean by "the ability to use the phone while charging"?
Well all the other wireless chargers I have are massive pads on the ground or stand like. The MagSafe is thin and can be used while you hold the phone in your hand normally.

That makes a lot of sense. But it still is a problem with the heat or it is just a faulty unit. At least fast charging didn't cause it, then. :)

Not that I'm doubting OP but I'm curious to understand if this was truly overheating for some reason and if there are any iPhone 12 users complaining of this. This wasn't made to be used with any other devices at this point

I didn’t use an iPhone 12, but iPhone 11 Pro Max. Which should be fine, since MagSafe for iPhone is compatible starting from iPhone 8.

I’m not 100% certain but I do not think you will get fast charging on the iPhone 11 with MagSafe.

Yes, I'm aware, hence my question. I know it's compatible, but it's not designed for :) I'm just curious if this was an issue of charging a previous generation phone with it. Unlikely, but I'm nevertheless curious

Exact same issue. Phone gets hot while charging on MagSafe, the red discoloration is from my red phone case. 😤

Wow. That's just ... wow.

I know my phone gets hot (12 Pro) when at 100% ... but damn! That has to get really hot to leech color out of the cases.

Maybe Apple should offer different color MagSafe charging pads and you get the one that matches your case the closest. At least it won’t be as noticeable. Or maybe Apple should stop selling them until they get it right. Hopefully, they get it right in time for their port-less transition. Come on, I’m sure they tested them with cases. They would be dumb if they didn’t and I know they’re not dumb.

Is it hotter than your previous iPhone? I have an X and it doesn’t feel hot to me when it’s fully charged. Does it get hot only with MagSafe or also with the cable?

Are all you using the phone while charging via MagSafe? I think this is why it’s getting hot. Just use a cable if you are doing this surely?
