I haven’t tried the magsafe on my 11ProMax yet and after reading this thread I’ll only be using it on the 12Pro.

Is it hotter than your previous iPhone? I have an X and it doesn’t feel hot to me when it’s fully charged. Does it get hot only with MagSafe or also with the cable?
It’s 2-3x hotter than my Anker 5w and 7.5w. In my experience not terribly hot when charging - overheats once 100%. 12 Pro. I don’t use it when charging.

Don’t understand the great attraction to wireless charging when wired is so much safer and efficient. You can even use the phone while charging.
I only use my wireless charger for overnight charging. I crawl into bed at 1am and read my iPhone until I get sleepy.

Fumbling around in the dark 90% asleep feeling around for tiny lightning cables and trying to shove them into tight docking port with two hands is a pain in the neck and wakes me up. Instead I reach over with one hand, drop the iPhone, done.

This guy does quite an in-depth review about the effect of the MagSafe chargers on bare phones and cases including third-party cases such as the Spigen. So it’s not just the Apple cases that are having issues

For me, my 12 pro only gets hot when using MagSafe, not the cable.

Are all you using the phone while charging via MagSafe? I think this is why it’s getting hot. Just use a cable if you are doing this surely?
Nope, never. When it’s on the MagSafe charger, it’s sitting on the desk. If I pick it up after even 30 min, it’s extremely warm to the touch.
I plan to return the MagSafe charger and switch back to cable charging.

Not cheaper if it frays and speed is useless when charging overnight

If it frays? This 65 dollar charger will as well. And if charging overnight is your thing then use a cheap Qi charger dock? No one needs this MagSafe junk.

I get what Apple is trying to do. Watch for MagSafe airpods which will be thinner and attach to iPhone but I’ll survive nicely without the mess.

For now I use wireless chargers for overnight as we did before MagSafe as well as usbc or docks with usb such as in car. It’s superior and will remain that way.

$65?? Mine only cost $39 from Apple. Still not acceptabl.
I'm assuming they mean the charger ($39) + the charging brick ($19) + Tax.

I have to agree, I'm not terribly impressed with MagSafe especially because of the overheat at 100% issue. 0-100% tho is not bad.

One guy has some discoloration on his and it’s a complete disaster? That’s a bit dramatic.
Yeah, most of the videos that came out about MagSafe ended up being uninformed - but still put out that "it's a disaster" atmosphere. The whole: "It won't work with 3rd party chargers, etc etc" lol.

Do you have "Optimized Battery Charging" on or off?

That is on - but I charge my phone all the time so I have never seen that turn on (but I don't know what it looks like cuz I've never seen it).

And what I consider to be "hot" may just be warm - granted. I'm kinda nuts about my battery. :)

what $65 charger? it's $39. EDIT: I see you're talking about AUD. regardless, it's not that much more than some of the other reputable fast Qi charger makers like Anker https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GYR8SGQ/ or Samsung https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Charge-Wireless-Charger-Stand/dp/B07VG9JMG1. yes i know you can find a $10 one easily.

the magsafe can be charged at any orientation while the lightning cable needs to make a nice little u-turn when coming from behind your table which is more likely to fray.

Woke up yesterday to 20% battery because the placement was slightly off my Mophie Qi charger. Everyone I know that uses a standard Qi charger has experienced this. If you haven't, you will soon enough.

I’d be happy enough with a slow Qi charger but I like the convenience of the magnet. Maybe we’ll see cheap third lefty 5-7.5w Qi chargers with magnets that line them up with MagSafe on the phone

The Lightning cable doesn’t need to bend at all if you’re holding the phone while charging which is MagSafes big selling point.

Bends for me. Personally the biggest selling point of MagSafe for me is 100% reliability in charging. Sometimes I drop my phone on the charger and it's not perfectly aligned which would result in 20-30% battery in the morning.

How interesting. My MagSafe looks new - what I don't like about it is that after my phone hits 100% it decides "Now it's time to super heat!" and gets really hot (along with the phone).

I'm not terribly happy about this product but ... the ability to use the phone while charging... simplicity, etc...

I may try a smaller wattage USB C brick.

Anyway, mine isn't discoloring - I have a black silicon case. With it being so new, maybe Apple will replace it?
I noticed that happen with my iPhone 12PM that I tried charging via magsafe last night... and at 60-70ish%... while it charges fast, but it was extreme hot... Did you still have the same problem with a different adapter... and how many wattage was the first adapter you tried comparing to the next one?
