I wonder if it's a slow roll out? Was there on Sunday and they had the new terminals but nothing was turned on (which they've had for a few weeks now). That tweet was from May 1st.

As I suspected. I think it's a slow roll out. The trader joe's near me, which has had those terminals for a few weeks now, is still on (as of this writing) the old OS. NFC/Chip disabled etc.

I just asked the Trader Joe's by me (which still has ancient looking terminals with no NFC/chip support) if they had any plans to install new ones or implement :apple: pay and they said there weren't any as of now. So looks like it's definitely regional and a slow rollout for now.

I have changed Trader Joe's to reflect your experience. I'm not so sure the os is older, as the background is the same and the same Trader Joe's is on there, but it just shows more stuff on the screen. The default theme must be a placeholder for a future changes, and I'm sure my local Trader Joe's probably won't have it either, guess I'll see tomorrow. Has anyone used this app to find Apple Pay places: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ispeakr-stocks/id942307294?ls=1&mt=8 ?

Yes I use that one instead of the PayPass one, it is more reliable and has less mistakes.

I have played with app, seems pretty nice. Just haven't verified all the locations. You have to move the map around to the area you want then tap on the 3 dots on top right of screen to check for AP places in that area. Watch for adds. They have a very small x to close.

Silly question.

When trying to use apple pay, do you have to tell the cashier you want to use Apple pay (so they can activate nfc) or do you just say credit or debit?

Or do you even have to say anything to them? Is nfc auto on and can I just hold the phone to the terminal once they process the item?

Thanks

I haven't had to say anything. Just hold it up close to terminal NFC logo and it will turn on phone and ask if you want to use Touch ID. Then use your fingerprint to accept. Also you can turn it on thru passbook and activate with fingerprint. It will then stay ready for 1 minute to be used for the payment. Of course you need to move phone up to terminal nfc logo to make the payment. Keep holding it there until it says done. Some have said they had to tell clerk to use credit.

Its the same here sadly, only seems like a limited rollout, as the MX925 only showed "Please swipe your card at any time" instead of the Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Contactless logo, but the theme is exactly the same otherwise. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1882728/ and http://forums.appleinsider.com/t/186285/trader-joes-grocery-chain-preparing-to-accept-apple-pay Although someome said company wide May 20th, but they may be a troll, I guess I can keep checking each week until it is on. Also the cashier said that they were going to get EMV by like August, but I'm sure Contactless will be turned on first company wide way before that happens. Also Natural Grocers is still accepting Contactless, both Apple Pay and Google Wallet. EDIT: I just found this video of Apple Pay at Smith's who is owned by Kroger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9MdaOFzl0U So that is what the MX915's would look like if Kroger would offically support Contactless company wide.

added Fresh Thyme to OP :apple::apple:

They added NFC readers to the terminals near me and I used it today...nice to see this being adopted at so many grocery stores - Kroger has the mx815/915s, but doesn't seem to have NFC enabled. I didn't see any "Use Apple Pay/Google Wallet/Soft Card" signage like some places that have added NFC more recently, but I'm not complaining. :)

Yes, nice. I used AP for second time today at our new Fresh Thyme. Next Wednesday one opens 2 miles from me. I am finding 80% of what we shop for there. Our new one will be bigger than the one I went to today. Meats are not what we want in the one visited today. So, hope an improvement in the new, closer one.

Wow quite a nice theme, is that an old NCR self checkout machine though? Around here we have No Frills & Bag N Save who replaced their whole machines with brand new Toshiba pos and self checkout machines: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38348368/0416152110.jpg I went to Sun Mart who has the same owners as No Frills and they have recently acquired brand new MX925's that only said "Please Slide Card." with a white background, but NFC was still enabled, so I added them to the list, although I think names like No Frills, Bag N Save and Sun Mart will all become Family Fare at some point in the near future, so as that happens I will remove those names accordingly. EDIT only certain stores are changing to Family Fares, so that won't be need to be done.

I have checked with Kroger support a few times and they keep saying its being looked at but no plans for roll out anytime soon. Kroger has to be one of the top stores on my list for places I shop.

If https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=21364861 is doing Apple Pay and Google Wallet I'm sure Kroger will too eventually, lol they are still using MX870's locally some without EMV slots, lazy Kroger.

Let's hope and I'm happy to hear Target is getting on board. We shop there versus other options. Kroger's around here have had new terminals for quite a while. They are EMV ready and have the built in reader for contactless. Its just off. They have had them long enough they are already looking used.

I got some new tires, they're mostly in gold coast cali (Big Brand Tires), and it looks like the shop has that new First Data FD35 EMV terminal. The guy asked if credit/debit, I went with credit, and apple pay went through.
Maybe more newer terminals are introduce before October.

For those of you in Minnesota like myself, Cub Foods is apparently going to offer Apple Pay support. The terminals at my location apparently have NFC in them since a customer came in last night and used his iPhone to pay for his groceries.

He demonstrated by putting his phone close to the terminal and his cards came up on the screen, then I selected Credit on my screen to complete the transaction. I was quite surprised to say the least because there are no stickers or anything showing an NFC or Apple Pay logo.

There are also manuals in the registers that say something about Apple Pay, so I will be snapping up photos while I'm working tonight to show what I mean. :)

Hey that would be cool if you did that! So I've seen Cub Foods on the Mastercard Contactless Locactor for a few months at least. They use these https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38348368/0502151705.jpg correct? That is the MX915 and its default behavior is to do contactless transactions. The one in the picture is at Natural Grocers and it actually shows four dots if it attempts to read a contactless phone/card and it fails to work the first time it shows those four dots instead of a MX870 like in the picture. Otherwise it won't show it for more than a few seconds and most people will probably miss it.

Yes we indeed use the MX915's! Apparently they've been installed in all Cub Foods locations.

The ones we use:
