Here's something new - a friend of mine and I were at Macy's today (we rarely go) and happened to buy some things…Discover via Apple Pay worked fine for her, but for my turn, my Visa card (credit) caused the register to shut down and reboot twice (card terminal was "processing" and lost the connection to the register once it rebooted). The register looked like it was running Windows 8+ and eventually worked with the same card as a chip. I'm not sure if anyone has seen anything like this before, but I haven't in the 2+ years with Apple Pay…

Macy's contactless processing is a bit odd, so I can't say I'm too surprised.

That's funny. My attempt to pay with Apple Pay at a Macy's store on Thursday caused 2 separate registers to crash and reboot. Using a chip card on a 3rd register worked.

It was in MA.
Since I live in MA, and shop at Market Basket, I 'm glad that's where you saw the Apple Pay sign. Was this at one of their new superstores, such as the ones in Waltham, Revere, and Chelsea? My local Rowley store doesn't even handle chip cards yet, and the PIN pads must be at least five years old.

Perhaps, to avoid confusion with the TX/LA chain, this should be listed as "DeMoulas Market Basket."

Thought those of you waiting for Kroger (including myself) would get a kick out of this...

The videos I watched at training today talked about how "technology continues to play an important role in Kroger's operations today" and that they constantly use technology to improve the experience.

Unless, of course, that involves something like Apple Pay and contactless payments.

If Visa fails to work try a MasterCard Paypass card as it seems to work better at places.

I've had good luck with Apple Pay overall - Discover seems to be the most broken and Amex seems to be the best. I know MasterCard was somewhat troublesome early on at Home Depot (they used to have NFC turned on, but turned it off when there were some issues, rather than fix them).

I have seen some failures with card reads in the past (which usually switching cards fixes it), but it just amazed me that a large regional bank's Visa card (Visa is still the most popular payment network in the US), would cause a register to completely crash. That seems more of a Macy's problem than an Apple Pay/Visa/PNC problem...

Home Depot turned it off due to the EMV upgrade as it no longer worked after that. This crashing issue is undoubtedly a Macy's POS problem and now they need to fix it. Now will they actually fix the problem is to be seen.

I saw it actually in Rowley, MA. I like your MB, clean and not too much crowd. I always stop there if I go from NH on 95 (better drive 1.5 miles than to stay in line 20 minutes in some other store). They don't have AP logo, but right before you swipe a credit card you can see Apple pay logo on the screen. Also now you swipe CC yourself instead of handing it to a cashier. I had a chip card, but I had to swipe it, there is no chip yet. May be they upgraded not all the terminals, but I'm sure that I saw AP there. I have not tried it yet. May be it is just a logo on the screen. Next time I try it on my Apple Watch.

Good to know on the clarification with Home Depot - I didn't need to go there very often and just recall that it was somehow "broken" at some point and then disabled (and I was mostly using an Amex at the time, but heard about some MasterCard issues). I did report the issue to Macy's feedback/customer service just so that they at least have a data point.

Domino's pizza does Contactless in stores at least around here and they use Ingenico iSC250's. Looks to have expanded to franchised Domino's pizza locations.

Update:
I was in Rowley, MA Market Basket and successfully paid with my Apple Watch. I asked credit and Apple Watch logo came on the screen.

Oh, that's awesome! Thanks for reporting in. Did you freak out the cashiers?
I usually pay by cash there, but I'll have to use Apple Pay next time, just to see it work.

Too be honest cashiers looked at me that I'm from the other planet. And I'm :)

I usually pay with American Express Blue , its 95 dollars per year, but gives 6 percent cash back in grocery stores up to 360 max(6000 spending), after is 1 percent. I have 2 cards and after I spent 6000 dollars on groceries I use the second card. This is free money. Amex has the same free card, but it gives only 3 percent.

I checked the transaction with Apple Watch and it came as "Category: Merchandise & Supplies - Groceries", so I get my 6% bonus.

I was at the Rowley, MA Market Basket today and used my iPhone for Apple Pay. Worked as fast as a card swipe. The only glitch (IMO) was that it asked for a signature. As I understand it, the signature is meaningless, since Apple Pay doesn't transmit my name. I signed with a squiggle. ;)

Ah, gotcha. I've still yet to visit a single gas station that does EMV inside, though.

I've seen several that do.

BTW, if you want to pay for gas outside with Apple Pay, get the Exxon/Mobil Speedpay Plus app, and use it at participating stations (the app has a locator). You scan a QR code at the pump and can pay with Apple Pay. Almost as good as NFC.

I use the SpeedPass+ app regularly. The QR code on the pump is strictly a fallback - one I've never had to use in almost a year of using the app. If you have location services enabled for the app, it knows that you're in a participating gas station. When you select "Pay for Fuel," it shows you the list of pump numbers, and you swipe to get to the pump number you're using. Not quite as convenient as NFC, because you have to select and start the app - but pretty darn close. And it's great not having to swipe a credit card at the pump. Gas stations are notorious for having card skimmers.

I like it when I use it, but there's been almost no growth so I'd have to really go out of my way to use it. What's even more annoying is that some locations aren't on the map as supporting it and don't work, yet have had QR stickers for months.

The Exxon by my house doesn't work via QR or GPS despite showing as supported in the app, but the other one down the road works perfectly, as does every other Exxon/Mobil I've tried.

Yep, I've run into one station (not near my house, I was traveling) that had everything and was listed in the app, yet it didn't work. I called the Speedpass folks and was told that there may be a signup step that the station owner hadn't completed. I mentioned it to the owner, who had thought it was (supposed to be) working. Obviously I didn't follow up, but it might be something to mention to stations where it doesn't seem to work.

Look what I found at a Costco in Columbus, OH today!

It is not functioning at the moment, however, I'm going to guess they're turning it on at the same time as EMV support?

Nevertheless... exciting! Another nice thing is that Costco uses the same pumps as Speedway, so this is what the equipment should look like for Speedway as well once they begin their rollout. :)

I asked Costco online about this, as these new pumps showed up at my nearest location late last year. And, the green light on the contactless area flashes, making you think it would work. Taunting you...

Anyway, their response was that contactless and EMV support was coming in "late spring" after they've finished rolling out the equipment to all locations.

Costco is only going to enable EMV to start per employee sources on reddit's /r/costco: https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/comments/5qm9e5/apple_pay/

Actually, Speedway will be rolling out NCR equipment.

Sounds right to me. My closest Costco in Perrysburg still only has a plain jane magnetic strip reader.

Well, a lot of retailers usually have EMV/NFC in tandem, but who knows. Either way, they're installing the equipment.

Correct, but I was referring to approximate placement of the NFC pad on the pump (they both use the same brand of gasoline pumps).

If you go to NCR's OPTIC page, you can see the NFC pad has similar dimensions and is in that same area. :)
