I’m coming from the iPad 2 and 3, they’re used exclusively in kitchen by my family for some basic browsing. For that they work perfectly. IMO, a great investment.
M1 in 10 years will still be able to play 4K HDR content. Think about that.

10 years of watching letterboxed content on a small screen? For anything immersive thanks, but no thanks.

I don’t know if you expect me to argue with you about that, maybe you missed the context of the post I was replying to.

I’m just providing a different opinion. As a TV it lacks in the immersive department for me hence as an investment it’s of questionable value. Tablets don’t just stop working and run for a long time but that doesn’t necessarily make them great in all areas.

Could you imagine if they waited to release M1 iPad Pros with iPadOS 15 announcement / at WWDC? lol

They intentionally did early so reviewers could endlessly conclude its an iPad, albeit a really nice and fast one, and speculate that 'M1 is tee'd up for a big iPad OS 15 feature breakthrough' to bridge the gap.

Good luck fitting whatever your vision of an ‘immersive TV’ is, on a plane.

Nope absolutely nothing, basically iOS/iPadOS 14 MacOS big sur with wallpapers ?‍♂️
I really don’t get all the update angst. What did you all expect? Macos on the iPad? Aside the glaring admission of better external monitor support, it’s was a pretty solid update.
We have multi tasking improvements.
We have app draw and widgets.
We have improved Safari including desktop type tab management and extensions.
We have a seemingly amazing continuity feature for working with macos.
That’s just off the top of my head, and addresses many many peoples issues over the past months. It doesn’t take in to account the cross platform improvements with FaceTime etc, or the massive privacy improvements especially with iCloud+ (which is free to those that already pay).
these are impressive updates whether it bought exactly what you expected or not

This is not an acceptable defense of a lackluster update. It's not on us to compile an iPadOS 15, it is on Apple to bedazzle us - by any means necessary, which they overwhelmingly didn't. Unless you've just been jonesing for widgets on the Home Screen, something that came last year for iPhone, and gaslight yourself into thinking it hasn't already been revealed and implemented long ago: this update is a bust.

I’ll miss these virtual formats i think. A lot better paced with great production value and less fluff BS and audience reaction BS

Couldn’t agree more. The audience reaction is nothing short of nauseating. Desperately sad and pathetic. These online only events are perfectly paced as you and others have said.

I asked what you expected, and then gave a solid list of what they offered. If you’re not impressed, because they didn’t put macos on the iPad or whatever, I’m not sure who’s problem that is.
The update addressed many of the prior complaints on these forums, including some of mine. Everything? Nope. But that’s ok.

That’s true

but i think they missed the mark on doing nothing with the Files app which many argue is limited to the point of useless

and they did add multitasking features, but many have reservations how good those improvements will really be

I also think the continuity between Mac and IPad is kinda neat, except it proves the iPad is more useful with a Mac than can be a standalone device for many workflows

I dunno, I think its just a weak update. But I will get by just fine, as I’m happy with my 2021 iPad Pro and its Replaced a 2017 iPad Pro of the old style

These updates seem to have improved every aspect of my workflow. I use my iPad both standalone and with my Mac, the continuity features will compliment sidecar for the better. I wish there where sidecar improvements though, specifically start it from the iPad.

Files app does everything I need, I have never had any of the bugs that people here seem to get, and I have never been limited in anything I needed to do with regards to any file manipulating. I do use it with file browser pro, for some photo work, but files is easier to use

I’ll use multitasking before judging over listening to anyone on here speaking about it ?

I think people are grossly underestimating what has come to the iPad and the whole ecosystem, due to what they wanted and didn’t get (nor are ever likely to get in some cases).

As I said, they missed stuff I think is essential, particularly better monitor support, but all the rest I feel they missed is just stuff that I want and that bothers me - but my use case isn’t everyone’s so I’m not going to ball my eyes out about it like some people here. what they have offered appears substantial in the areas it applies.

For me it just boils down to lack of incentive. IPad is already in a class of its own that rivals can’t touch. There’s a reason even android phone fans levitate towards iPad for tablet use.

Still, I don’t like that they are resting on their laurels. Though it seems that‘s a matter of opinion

FWIW iPad is perfectly fine in my roster to continue complementing the Mac and for casual use replacing it. But I see people’s frustration that for the prices they charge, which well exceed Mac with many configurations or at minimum come just under without a keyboard, fully replacing a Mac shouldn’t be an unrealistic expectation. Coupled with the same chip in Macs.

Tablets are mostly just that, a niche product to fill the gap between devices that already exist, not a must have, but a nice to have. It’s the flexibility makes them special, and ofc the pen compatibility.
To expand my original point, the iPads released in recent years will age better than the first ones 10 years ago, when the tech and standards were still maturing. You can see the trend already, iPad 3 was supported for 4 years, while iPad Air 2 is supported for its 7th year and counting.

That’s also subject to opinion I think. My ipad has replaced everything, except I need lightroom classic. I like macs, I won’t ever get rid, but I’m just saying.

ipados needs improving, but it’s still young and it’s getting better slowly and steadily- which is the Apple way and we all know this !!

I'm trying to think when Apple has bedazzled me with an iOS/iPadOS update but the answer really is never. The incremental software improvements have helped with how I use my iPad, though.

Apple must differentiate the iPad from the MacBook and MacOs or iPad will cut into the sales of these devices. So, before they can make the 16gb ram accessible with pro apps, they will have to build M2 and M3 chips into the MacOs devices to make them "much" better than iPad Pro so they are not competing with iPad Pro. Right now there are a ton of YouTube comparisons between iPad Pro and MacBooks because they are so similar with the magic keyboard. When you see the future MacBooks you will probably see the future of the iPad Pro as being a really pro device, just not as pro as MacBook and not as versatile as macOS. It just can not exceed or even be the same as MacBook or why have two lines of products? Ipad is first a consumption device and second a production device, where the MacBook is the opposite. That's why no mini led display for MacBook this time around.

Currently the hardware far exceeds the software so if this model is a keeper for you, it should get much better in time. Question is how long before it happens.

We can all agree that WWDC 2021 provided us with incremental upgrades throughout all OSes. That said, incremental does not mean bad. Some of them are nice. But yes, there were no "wow" announcements.

I personally think that we shouldn't discard the impact of Covid + all the work to transition from Intel to Apple Silicon. Combined together, these 2 factors left but little manpower to focus on OSes. One can say that these are separate teams and that one should not affect the other. I would disagree with such an argument, especially given how connected hardware and software are at Apple.

My view is this:
  • 2020 to 2021
Apple focusing on the hardware transition from Intel to Apple Silicon (and it's far from being a completed job)
  • From 2022
Apple focusing on OSes; no macOS on iPad (never), but bringing universal apps (the exact same code for Safari, Contacts, Calendar, so and so forth on both iPadOS and macOS) + introducing "pro" apps to the iPad like FCP, Logic, Xcode, and maybe some apps like Disk Utility as well (but that's a big "maybe" as we're in macOS territory here)

In the end, didn't expect nothing, because nothing was released apart from the same opening systems with new wallpapers.?‍♂️ but hey we got new Animoji customisations ???‍♂️?

I just wanted to acknowledge I was totally wrong about macOS on iPad Pro 2021. I still don't understand why the hell they're shipping those with that much memory but whatevs. I'll keep my 2020 for another year, I'm more annoyed there isn't an m-series Pro desktop yet.
