iPadOS 15, huh?

The good news:

I expect a plethora of refurbished and slightly discounted M1 iPad Pros hitting Apple sites near you within 3-4 weeks from now.

The better news:

All the currently sold iPads should fly through iPadOS 15.

A cherry on top:

I can now have a huge fancy clock widget on my Home Screen, yes! ✌️

At this point they’re giving it just about everything except what we want.

So happy I didn’t give in.

Another year, another reason to stick to MacOS!
I've never understood this "MacOS vs iPadOS" mindset.

Why the hell would Apple ever come close to merging the two OS'? They have made it abundantly clear over the years that the iPad has its space....and the MacBook and iMac do as well. Yes, the iPad does a lot of stuff that a laptop can do. But why would Apple purposely murder their MacBook sales by essentially turning the iPad into one? It doesn't make sense from a business perspective and it never will.

It's time to embrace the reality of where things are - iPad doesn't need MacOS in order to be just fine.

Can you elaborate a bit on this? I don't think I have any missing software on my iPad in relation to my macOS workstations. I'm pretty easy; OmniFocus, DEVONthink, Due, Fantastical, Lightroom, and Obsidian is in test flight now and that's the only app I feel like I'm "missing". My career is in IT Security and my hobbies are photography, publishing, and drones.

During the work week my iPad spends about 1/4th of the time in OneNote because that's my whiteboard when I'm conducting workshops.

As for Final Cut Pro or something on iPadOS, I would imagine most filmmakers need more storage than an iPad Pro will give them unless they plan on hitching it up to a JBOD or something and being tethered. Which might be totally fine and what filmmakers want, that's definitely something I don't know anything about. I use iMovie occasionally and that's it.

Two areas by example - mathematical software (eg. Mathematica, Matlab), and music notation software (OK there is Notion, but the big players are Sibelius, Dorico, Finale).

and until that times comes I'll keep my money. But we've been waiting for iPad to take the next software leap forever.
I understand that sentiment. But what "software leap" is really necessary at this point? Apple has made it very clear that the iPad is designed to be a different device than a MacOS driven device. At this point, people are expecting Apple to essentially merge two OS' (and by extension, multiple devices) when they clearly believe that it's not in their best interest from a business perspective. And frankly, they are likely right!

By making multitasking and file management as good as MacOS.

Double the ram was not for « no reason » it was for money reason
If it was truly only for the money, they could have separated it out from the storage upgrade. And that would have made them more money! There are lots of people on this forum alone who wanted an option to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB on a lower-tier model.

I’m really glad I didn’t order a new iPad Pro based on software. My update is from a 2017 iPad Pro, so purely based on hardware. I can see why some people would be upset by this, if they had purchased based on software.
If anyone purchased an iPad based on the hopes that the software would suddenly have massive updates, they have not payed much attention to Apple's track record for it.

My gripe is with the MacBook. It is 2021 and it still doesn’t have a touchscreen or have convertible functionality. Ended up buying a windows laptop for half the price and double the features. Lol.

Looks like the iPad Pro 12.9 2021 is going back

What a crock of (poo emoji)

So you bought the iPad based on expectations of iPadOS being incredible.. I understand people who have a 2018/2020 model find the 2021 model not that big of a upgrade, but for many people who have even older iPads, or smaller size screens, this 2021 12.9 inch is definitely a big upgrade.

I never buy any items on expectations of what may come, I buy the items with the intention of using it in the now.

Looks like apple hasn’t payed attention to what people really want from iOS and iPadOS, they’re flying through the event and all I’ve seen so far is trash after trash.

And people bought the new iPad for what now? Thank God I didn’t buy into the hype and kept my 2020 iPad for another one or two years.
Think you answered your question. I’m sure most ppl like me buy a new device only once a couple of years.

With all due respect, why would you have even upgraded to begin with?

I had a first-gen 12.9 Pro....So the upgrade for me was huge. But let's be honest - There are very few gadgets where you are going to see an initial leap in difference going from just one year to the next. That's why most people only upgrade every 3-5 years or perhaps even longer. Apple (and other companies) always have to balance their new tech and feature-set with the fact that most people will always be running older hardware. So it always comes down to a balance of what "cool new stuff" you can offer up, countered with making sure that the majority of people can still enjoy it.
