I fully agree with everyone saying that a slight gap isnt reason enough to return a computer, I wouldnt have returned a computer just because of that. BUT....Its the attitude towards people that are not satisfied with their computers. Is it really neccesary? Calling people dimwits and idiots and questioning their motives for posting. Its SO uncalled for. If you dont like whats in the thread then yeah...by all means say something but it doesnt have to be an insult.

There are so-called "demi-Gods" on here who think they can talk to and insult a "newbie" anyway they want to b/c they posted more quotes. Like that means anything in the real world.

I guess this forum is too big for moderators and they only read interesting topics or those which pop up with curse words (for which these demi-Gods are keen to).

When these guys insult you, there is a little icon in their posts that you can use to report their post. It is a red triangle with a black vertical line inside of it.

Mine has the same gap, i wouldn't worry about it man. At least you know it's not from being dropped at the factory or something, if everyone has the same gap. And I can totally understand being concerned about a computer that costs close to 3,000.

Yea, people shouldnt be quick to judge others over this stuff. I can understand, you pay a large amount of cash, you want it perfect. unfortunately its not going to happen. Just liek new car syndrome, take the insignificant defect (in this case a gap) and call it the scratch on the car. If thats the worse thing to happen to the laptop, youre doing well.

Took me forever to accept this :D

Why? Why fight for something that doesn't really matter, like whether your laptop screen doesn't fit perfectly, rather than something important, maybe I didn't express it very well . To me it seems just weird if you think that it's important that your Laptop has a one 1mm gap at the edge.

Of course those things mentioned are more important than a laptop but even though kids are starving all over the world, Id be pissed if the guy at mcdonalds burned my hamburger to ash and charged me for it.

I think the point here should be is that Apple obviously hasn't managed to get tight tolerances on these, as there are MANY reports of the gaps. An exchange will give you a 50/50 chance of getting another one with a gap and/or uneven illumination.

That being said, the gaps, and especially the lighting problems are a main reason I bought a MB instead.

I had a problem with an uneven gap on my 17" C2D MBP. The problem occurred because I was gently closing the screen with one hand. I now close the screen firmly with two hands (No, I don't slam it). I place each hand with the forefinger roughly in line with its corresponding latch slot on top of the screen. I then firmly swing the screen down until it latches. The result: even gaps. I also found that the computer now consistently wakes from sleep when I open it.

And I'll bet a good bit of money that this is the cause of a good percentage of the gaps on all brands of laptops. Opening by one corner exerts a huge amount of force on a very thin case top, especially an aluminum one that doesn't have the...damn it, I can't remember the term when a material wants to resume its original shape. Plastic is this, aluminum isn't.
That however isn't a defect, it is a characteristic of the material the buyer should be aware of when purchasing. Much like leather.
4nex "Price isn't everything. My turntable cost less than that, so did my amps, so did my car, none of them had an defects when I got them, none of them do now."
Every single one of those items had imperfections when you got them, I'm sure someone could easily go over them with a fine tooth comb and find lots of arbitrary inperfections. As to the car, do you really think you bought a car with no defects? Your credibility sinks fast when you make rediculous statements.
As to the statements that "APPLE" doesn't have a good handle on the quality control here, you might want to go read other forums. HardForums is great for reading people whine forever about dead pixels in their Dell monitors...

The gap is probably within specification. If you have 8 dead pixels, then I think you should bring it back to Apple, they'll either give you a new one, or replace the display.

Except then you wouldn't be able to eat the burger and digest the "goodness"* as it will have been converted to carbon, however you can still use the laptop just as well as someone without the 1mm gap.

* it is a McDonalds burger after all ;)

McDonalds wasn't such a great example, apple is like a decent meal- you pay for the whole experience, not just taste and smell but presentation as well. Apple computers are meant to be quick and so on but they are also meant to be well presented and look good.

wow, this thread is getting crazy!

op, if you aren't happy, try and get it fixed.

I do agree that macs should not have this problem. I think it is a design flaw.

but sometimes, you just have to live with it because apple is not perfect AND time waiting for the computer to get fixed/replaced is time lost.

by the way, my macbook CD is warped too, but I learned to live with it.

Why on earth should you live with it? I understand that you dont have time to wait for replacements and so on but wth, I just cant live with a 2k computer that has a crappier display than my 6 y.o Dell Inspiron, a dodgy keyboard, crooked dvi-port, messed up superdrive, uneven backlighting, dents and scratches that I didnt cause, misaligned case etc...

Some people are just WAY to forgiving.

Comsume comsume my friends...and if it comes broke then its not Apples fault, its YOUR fault for having TOO high expectations.

The thread is going no where. Some people are ready to pay extra for a good quality product and expect QUALITY from the manufacturer; however apple is not delivering that quality any more. This is my personal opinion, that formed form my personal experience and the same feeling I get from reading this forum. ( I know… I know, people who are happy don’t come here and complain, but it seems that there are too many who are unhappy).

The MBP is going to be returned, and replaced (thank u apple sales support, and Apple care people have to learn from them(send a new computer for repair…wtf!!)).

My belief is that we should not go to the extremes with 'everything should be perfect', but I see the gap(big cosmetic issue) and dead pixels on a new machine as a major issues. I know that Dell would replace and I am happy that Apple does as well.

I think if we lower our standards to much and say that gap is ok or that noise in CDrom is OK, the manufacturer would think that there is no problem with the production line and to save money and would decrease the quality levels and control to save money. The amount of defective units(like my unit or other ones that were reported in other threads) would increase dramatically. People should complain to keep good standards of service and quality of the product.

This is just my opinion, and you may agree or disagree. Everyone has the right for their personal opinion.

Stop reading it then, I DID take it back, twice. Still pissed about it. Not all people are like you, you used to rock that Steve Jobs avatar, You probably have a Steve poster hanging over your bed, why are you lashing out at me? What is it that makes you respond to me in this manner? Oh yeah thats right...cause your an online tough-guy. You wanna be a stupid comsumer that doesnt care about quality thats fine, this thread is about the flaws in some MBPs, if you cant handle that then dont read the friggin thread alright? Go read a manual for an old Apple Computer, look through your Apple Scrapbook, reread Stevies Biography, dust off your Shrine to all that is Apple. Go listen to your iPod. Some people are having problems with these machines and your response is to buy a Dell? Smart guy....

Its so funny when people like you take it personally that somebody is having a hard time with Apple...it really kills you doesnt it? I feel sorry for you.

Uh oh, you got me, you found out my secret in life. I love being an online tough guy, it really gets me going. And oh my god you haven't seen ANYTHING until you see my Apple shrine and my room covered in Steve Jobs posters  FYI I never had a Steve Jobs avatar... at least get your facts right before personally attacking me like that.

Seriously, if you don't like the MBP and you think it's a crap product then return it, get your money back and buy something that you think is not a crap product.

--Good day

Wanting to return the thing because of 6 dead pixels is naive and idiotic?

I think it is since there are still 1,295,994 good pixels left.

Also I have the gap too, but I swear it developed after purchase meaning the display is warping a little???

Count me in the camp with not expecting perfection...Thanks for the good...um...er...debate.

I agree, nothing is perfect. But, 6 dead pixels would annoy me some. But, once again the OP did not even notice the dead pixels in their first post. So how bad is it really?

Consider me of the "If I buy a car for $20,000, I don't want to find a dent in the rear fender, sticky brakes, and a cracked windshield" camp. ;)
