I picked up 2x4GB of those "wasted" sticks from an Imac 2020 for $18 bucks.
And going for 4x4x4x4. I think it should clock to 2666 with dual channel performance.
Will report when the imac arrives (in 10 days)

New 2020 iMac. Four 16 GB OWC modules and I assume it is working. Getting the correct speed, but I have no idea how to check if I'm getting Dual channel. Any thoughts?

I did the same config as you ... I ran Geekbench scores that indicate I’m getting the correct speeds... but not sure how to officially check if it’s dual channel

Hmmm, given the reports of even identical sticks from the same manufacturers purchased at different times not playing nicely together, I think I won't bother ordering another set of the OWCs right away. I don't need more than 32GB right now and wasn't keen on outlaying even more cash straight away.

If and when it comes time to upgrade again I'll probably buy 4x32GB rather than rebuying 4x16GB sticks just to ensure they're from the same batch. Unless anyone has some luck running one pair in each channel?

I'll probably do the same. imac arrives Tuesday and I have 16gb with the imac and 2x16 from OWC. I'll just use the 32GB from OWC and when I really need to just order 2x32gb later on at the same time to ensure it all works at 64gb.

Sucks because had I known this, I only would have went with 8gb....I was hoping to have 48gb of RAM.

Hi All

Trying to follow this thread but it's difficult to see what the consensus is.

New iMac arrives wednesday and i want to upgrade the RAM. From what I've been able to gather it's best to stick with one manufacturer and have each RAM stick in different bays?

Will probably go with OWC.

What configuration / order? I have 16gb from apple + 32gb from OWC.

Crucial. 2666 DDR4. So Dimms. 2 x 16 gig sticks. From Amazon.

They're in slots 1 and 3.

I've put the '8 gigs' of Apple RAM to one side for now.

Really? 32 gigs is more than enough to game, 3d, 2d or video work. I ran my iMac late 2012 with 8 gigs for 7.3 years.

32 gigs feels like 'the open sea' compared to that.

OCW are highly regarding. Crucial is very often the RAM of choice. That's pretty much the 'consensus.'

If you buy OWC, stick with them. If you buy Crucial? Stick with them.

If you buy 2 x 16 gig sticks from OCW? That leaves 2 slots to buy 2 x 16 gig sticks from OCW down the line. Probably best to keep it matches by the sounds of it.

Put the 1st batch in slots 1 and 3. If you buy the 2nd batch later? Put it in 2 and 4 for that 'dual channel' performance advantage.

I did have the 40 gigs of RAM 'working.' But I certainly lost that dual channel performance advantage in Geek Bench 5. So I just took out the 8 gigs.

32 gigs is more than fine for now. I'm not pushing my rig at the moment.

If you post the link from OWC or from Amazon here?

I'm sure someone will post their approval...

Better yet, Apple should let us sell them back to Apple at Apple‘s prices.

A good point. :p. Hello Apple...

They should have included 16 gigs with the base specs.

Ok I read through everything in this thread and just wanted to confirm the advice.

I have never owned a Mac before and bought one as a gift. The iMac 27” 2020 I bought comes with 8 GB from Apple. I bought 128 GB from Crucial in a single order.

That 128 GB came as two containers of 64 GB each (2 x 32 GB each container) and they all look exactly the same with what just looks like a serial number different between them.

Should I tell the person receiving the machine to keep the RAM from each package together? Aka one package in slots 1 & 3 and the other in 2 & 4?

The person receiving it has never built a computer themselves before or dealt with anything like this. So I want to make sure I get the instructions very precise (and correct).

Keeping each pack of RAM in its own DIMM (ie. slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4) is probably the wisest option. I would recommend that they set up the system first and make sure that it's stable, then power down, remove the Apple RAM, replace it in the same slots with one pack of the Crucial, and then populate the remaining slots with the second pack of Crucial.

Aye. Just remove the Apple RAM and put the 2 x 64s (nice...) into slots 1 and 3. ie just replace the Apple RAM with the RAM you bought. Which is basically what I did. I put the Apple RAM to one side.

Sorry, I wasn’t super clear in my original post. I just updated it. It came in two containers. Each container is 64 GB made up of two 32 GB sticks. So four sticks total.

I doubt a setup with Apple stock RAM mixed with any aftermarket RAM will ever work at full speed.
There won’t be any mixing. The 8 GB from Apple will be pulled out and never used after initially booting the machine to make sure it works.

After that it will be four 32 GB sticks all from Crucial. Some people reported even having issues with all aftermarket RAM when all sticks had the same size and were from the same manufacturer. It sounds like that was due to the RAM they got at different times being slightly different.

So to ensure minimal chance of issues I am going to tell the person I am gifting the machine to to do one container Crucial RAM (2 x 32 GB) in slots 1 and 3 and the other container Crucial RAM (2 x 32 GB) in slots 2 and 4. At least that is what I understood from reading through everything. And KrazyKanuck’s reply seemed to back that up.

Yes this is the right way to do it.
128 GB of RAM .... damn... what’s the purpose of this iMac ?

Thanks for confirming.

They'll be using it for video and music editing along with a bunch of other uses. I was originally going to do 32 GB from Apple because of the high Apple RAM prices. But I read up more (having not bought a Mac before) and saw how much cheaper it was to buy RAM from Crucial. I think it was only like $50 to go from 32 GB from Apple to 8 GB from Apple and order 128 GB from Crucial to replace the 8 GB.

Yea I mean I'm coming from 2GB on my 2007 MBP so 32gb feels like a ton...even my PC only has 8gb right now. 32 should be enough for me for Logic Pro X...More ram = more samples and more plugins I can run / tracks overall though. I should be more than fine with 32gb...and if not, I'll just buy another 32gb...

It's more so the fact I'll have 16gb I can't use.

Aye.

I didn't even bother testing my Apple RAM with the Crucial. I just left it at 32 gigs.

If I need more? I'll by more Crucial.

I had 8 gigs for 7.3 years. Did most everything.

32 gigs should be more than enough for 2d, 3d, gaming and video.

I edit a lot of video these days. My machine would choke if it had only 32GB RAM like my last iMac.

Plugins can be RAM hogs. There's a reason that the MP 7.1 can take up to 1.5TB RAM—sometimes, single AV files can use that much while rendering.

Just because you don't think you need it, doesn't mean that others have the same requirements.
