Just exchanged my 15" rMBP 2012 (base model, international keyboard) for a new 2017 base model in Germany (also international keyboard).

Timeline:

July 12 - took to Apple store, failed battery test, agreed on replacement with "same or better".
July 14 - was called asking for credit card details and what color I wanted (went for grey), no other details offered, also told they couldn't promise anything.
July 24 - 209 euros charged to account (credit card probably charged a few days before).
July 27 - told my laptop had arrived, come and exchange.

I asked in the shop and they said I was very lucky, and the last (of around 10) who got a new laptop before the policy change.

Let this give hope to those waiting anxiously for their call ;)

Hi,

So as of today (in the UK at least) I can confirm that Apple is no longer offering an MBP replacement since the parts (top case) will be available very soon (max 2 weeks).
As a result the choice of waiting until mid September and having the battery replaced for free is no longer live either.

I have one question though. I was aware of this battery shortage -- before the online articles -- back in June when I went to one of the London Apple stores in order to pay the 199£ and get my battery replaced. I had been offered two choices:

- Wait until September 15th and the replacement would be free of charge
or
- Pay and have a refurbished macbook (which could be a new model as other users reported).
However, the price quoted was 450ish pounds VAT excluded instead of the price for the battery service, that is 199£.
When I went back again today and tried to go with the macbook exchange option they also quoted me that price, just before saying they couldn't actually do that anymore as mentioned at the top.

Have any other users had this price quoted to them?

I checked my battery cycle count and it's 1053 as of today. On average it's 5 cycles a week. So when I went to the Apple store in June it was very close to 1000 but above.
I think that may be the reason I didn't have the 199£ CRU option as my machine was perhaps considered "too" used. So close then...

So if I got 2.7Ghz, 16gb and 512gb cru do you know what model is it most likely to be? 2015 bumped up or 2016 base?

I'm in the same boat. Took mine in July 19th and although I have been charged for it, my hopes are not high. :(

Any update on yours? Exact same thing for me...took it in on the 19th as well and they had placed an order for replacement and card got charged a few days later. Called them today and they told me they are still "waiting" on the replacement, I did press them and asked them that I'm 100% getting a replacement computer and they said yes.

So who knows.

Got my replacement this week.
Very happy.

Originally had a late 2012 rMBP CTO - maxed-out 2.7Ghz/16B/768GB.
My replacement was a refurb late 2016 touch bar 2.9/16GB/2TB/Radeon 460 (the equivalent machine from 2016).

Apple were amazing with this program while it lasted.
I had excellent customer service and communication from genius bar to management.
Top notch.

Also had a seamless TimeMachine restore from my old 2012 backup to the new machine.
Even software that was not meant to work under Sierra runs fine.

Feels like Christmas - watch out Geniuses - I may hug you at random :D

Look in the "mega thread" I'm the op, got a 2016 2.6/512 on Thursday.

Back from my week away (which felt like an eternity) and just had my appointment.
The good news is that I am getting a free battery and display replacement on tuesday.
You all know the bad news :(

I must say I almost wish that I had never heard of all of this - would have made the free repair much sweeter, as it should be.

Props to all of you who were luckier than I,
and thanks nonetheless to all contributors on this thread, I am still getting a much fresher MacBook out of all this after all :)

How did you get a free battery replacement, if I may ask?

I took mine into the local Apple Store today (Sunday) and it failed the battery test then the guy said "let me speak to my manager". Came back and said we can replace the battery for free costing £401 and said placement batteries are due to be available later next week (few days). I signed for the work to be done, which is ok for me if it's free but if I've gotta wait a while them I'm wondering if I should ring back and complain. They let me take the laptop home.

Not sure how to play it if come the end of the week I don't hear anything back but got an email notification soon after.

Literally took it in today, played it innocently, genius ran the test which failed (Coconut battery says 840 cycles and 60% total design capacity). He said the part was out of stock but due Tuesday. I asked how much and he said "well, about that, given that your battery failed before it was meant to, and that you bought it from apple directly, you're covered by consumer law and we are prepared to do the repair free of charge." It was only after that that he threw in the display replacement too.

In my case, he said it should be Tuesday, that he's give me a ring and I could come in for the fix when I wanted after that without the need for an appointment.

So just got notification that my replacement just got to the Apple Store...hopefully its the full replacement they offered and not a top case!

When are you going to pick it up? Today? Will you please let us know what you will get? Thank you :)

Same here. Apple confirmed yesterday that they would replace the battery. I received a repair email which has a the battery and a ‘labor’ fee. I can collect my device in the meantime if I want to. Battery meant to be in by Thursday. They’ve listed 10-14 days to do the work. Did you contact Apple again?

Wow that's amazing. Afaik they only do free replacements when you are still within you're warranty period (that's what Apple starts at their own battery page). In what country/store was this? Might be worth to make an appointment after all

It was only today I was there so I'll wait. Looking at my email, it says they'll call me in 3-5 days. See what they say.

I might speak to them tomorrow. I’ve got over the disappointment of not getting a newer replacement device but just a bit concerned that the logic board they replaced last year might be the heat/fan problem I had (which was draining the battery as well as the battery not being at full capacity).

Let me know what they say mate, good luck :)

This was in Newcastle, uk. My take is that it's the equivalent of the September 15th free replacement, only pushed forward precisely to stop the topic of this thread.

Does this offer only apply to people who purchased their MacBooks new and had AppleCare?
If I bought one of these 2012 MBPs with a battery problem second hand would it still be eligible for replacement?
