So a few days after Apple ordered me a 2015 maxed out refurb model, I just got a call back saying they had none in stock and are offering me a base 2017 model. Absolutely crazy! No extra charge or anything.

The only issue is that I’m gonna have to deal with buying dongles, but it isn’t a bad trade off from going from an early 2013 MacBook to a 2017 for £199!

Where abouts did you go? I'm scheduled to go in tomorrow but I'm worried I might be too late. I'm hearing other UK people are being rejected now.

I went to two AASPs and both immediately told me that there's a shortage, nothing they can do. Anyone has experience dealing with AASPs in countries where there are no Apple stores?

I'm in Norway where there's no official Apple Store, only APRs and AASPs. Just a week ago I got the «Service Battery» warning. I didn't know about this practice with CRUs and all, I just went in to check if the battery would be covered by the consumer law or what the cost for the repair would be. The battery test failed (Replace battery!) with 76% full capacity and 5-600 cycles.

I got the two options: to wait until mid September for service or a to get a CRU. The tech wasn't aware of this pratice and this was his first experience with the shortage of mid 2012 / early 2013 topcases (with keyboard, trackpad and glued battery).

Of course i opted for a the CRU. My Mac is an early 2013 rMBP 15"/2.7/16GB/512GB/650M with Norwegian keyboard and I just now got confirmation about the CRU: either silver or stellar grey tbMBP 15"/2.8/16GB/512GB/RadeonPro550. o_O:D

Just to repeat the clarification:

The MacBook Pro retina 15" of mid 2012 and early 2013 are the only affected models and they're basically the same generation. The ONLY difference is a minor speedbump in CPU, as in a bump from 2.3 GHz to 2.4 GHz for the low spec and 2.6 GHz to 2.7 GHz for the high spec.

2 questions.
When did you take yours in at first?
How did you find out what model you're getting?
Thanks!

I went in on Thursday last week and left my rMBP as one usually does with repairs. Only thing I knew when I left was that I supposedly was getting a CRU. No specific model or ETA.

I sent the tech an email today, and he got back to me with CRU specs after prompting Apple / GSX again. Now I have to add that I used to work in this place for some years and know the guys personally, thus I also know how AASPs work, so the only privileges I get in terms of Apple product repairs are a cup (or three) of coffee and informal communication.

Weird. They had me keep mine until the new one comes in, I really haven't heard anything besides them getting my cc info and it's been 6 days.

I had my reasons for leaving the MacBook in the shop. Your experience is probably more in line with what's normal in these cases.

Interested in your outcome.
Many accounts say that they leave the store having accepted the repair, but only to hear about the upgrade on the phone a day or two later.

Good luck.

Like for like replacement, incoming :D

Went in with my Genius Bar appointment for the battery issue. It did not pass the test. We started the $199 battery replacement process, and at the last moment he said something like "uh, we have a problem. A good problem." lol

He went in the back to talk to his "Admin," which took about 5+ minutes. Told me what everyone else has echoed: this would require a wait until September, so instead they'll offer a like for like replacement. He said I'd get a call from the local store later that day to get my CC info. I got that call but the system was down or something. This is odd bcs I saw a similar post via Reddit from about a month ago. They called me back this AM and we got the process through.

They said it would take 1-2 weeks, which is a bummer, but I do still have my current laptop. I do not know what I am getting in return, at this point, which is also kind of frustrating. I was informed those details would be available once they submit the $199 payment. They said I would get a call in about a week with those details.

Finally, when I asked about a process for getting an in-store 2017 model and paying the difference, multiple people told me they would only discount $200 (the price of the service) off the base price, which is of course not worth it.

So there it is. Unreal.

I left mine in and was told that I will be getting slightly faster CPU but the rest will be the same. Now I wonder if that person was only talking about RAM + SSD or even the GPU and in that case I would be getting 2012 again.
I was told that they are constraint and that I will be getting brand new machine but that was about it.
Overall super nice experience and the staff was amazing but I kinda wonder what is waiting for me and I'm scared to ask :D :D :D

I think its 2.8GHz and no touch bar so I guess its 2015, right?

Hi,

I tried to get my battery replaced today in an Apple Store in Switzerland. The battery test stated a remaining capacity of 80.89%. The employee went to the back to talk to his "boss" and came back with the statement that they refuse to replace the battery. He told me to come again when the battery drops more in capacity. I told him that I don't expect the replacement for free - I will pay for it. But it seem that Apple is picky in taking customers money for repairs.
Did I get this right - in September they will have spare parts on stock again for the 2012 MBPr? if yes then I won't be able to upgrade to a newer machine since I don't think that the capacity will drop dramatically within the next month.

EDIT: I showed him the CoconutBattery log showing the battery going down to 73% two days ago. Unfortunately it seems that they can only initiate a repair when their own tool is displaying lower than 80%.

Lucky you! I have to wait till saturday to be back in the uk, and Sunday for my appointment. Trying to ignore the recent blow up in attention this has had.

Call them and ask! I had a similar situation, had not heard anything in 6 days, called them and found out the Credit Card was rejected (it had plenty $ available so they screwed up the order somehow). I gave them a different CC number and they had to resubmit the order. My CC was charged $210 two days later, and now we wait.

I have a mid-2012 15" rMBP. Battery cycle is 689. No Apple Care and well out of warranty, how do I get me one of these free 2017 models? o_O

Thread is unclear. Who do I call about my free 2017 MacBook Pro? I'm clearly entitled to one.
This guy must be joking on us.

To be entitled to a free 2017 MacBook Pro? Your MacBook Pro is out of warranty. If you wish a battery replacement, you're entitled to a $199 new battery. ;) Then, if you get to be lucky, you MIGHT be offered a 2015/2016/2017 MacBook Pro at $199. No right though.

Edit: Sorry, in your case £199.

This thread clearly suggests I’m due a 2017 MacBook Pro. Cough up, Apple.

Surprise surprise, once the story was published then all the other tech websites picked it up too.

The fact that Apple seem to be able to get parts in more quickly now is interesting – it seems that someone originally figured that the replacement program would be cheaper than hauling ass on producing new parts. Well, not any more.

According to this Reddit post, the replacement is ending (primarily due to the MacRumors article about the programme):
https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/6plxy3/2012_macbook_pro_replacement_no_longer_works/dkqddef/
I have open case and replacement ordered (most likely 2015 but hasn't been confirmed) :(

Would that mean that they might change it and I get 2012 instead now that silly MR posted this? At the end of the day, I was told that I'll get new machine (not refurb) so I guess that will make me content although I was hoping for at least 2015 as that would make me ecstatic :D :D :D
