Tried it again just now, failing to retrieve one package. It's annoying. I wish I'd be able to make an LXDE installer myself. I don't have the knowledge unfortunately.

Thank you for all that you do, nonetheless. Just the ported theme alone is great. :)

This is really cool stuff. Are there AltiVec-based optimizations for G4/G5 in MintPPC/Debian sid?

Nonetheless, excellent work.

Hi Jeroen,

I am really pleased to see that you have revived your interest in MintPPC after your MintPPC 11 project went offline after the birth of your first son. I was a member (aka verdant) on your MintPPC 11 forum on mintppc.org.
:D

In your MintPPC repo could you please consider incorporating curl and snapd, as I would like to install Spotify for Linux on my Pismo to see if it works because Spotify no longer appears to work using OS X on G3, G4 and G5 machines anymore?

I have got MintPPC installed on a 500MHz Powerbook G3 Pismo with 1GB RAM and a 40GB HDD using your 32-bits MintPPC (G3, G4) .iso burnt onto a CD as trying to boot the installer from a USB flash drive was too convoluted and time consuming.

Using the the ‘c’ key after the boot chime does not work, giving the error message shown in the attachment, using a CD-R and a CD-rw disk burnt at different speeds using different burning software.

The solution is to boot into Open Firmware by holding down the “Command,” “Option,” “0” and “F” keys simultaneously as the Pismo boots, and then at the 0 > prompt, type

boot cd:,\install\yaboot

and then press Return/Enter.

************************************ WiFi using B43xx driver
Also, to avoid any issues with trying to install BCM43xx wireless chip firmware from Broadcom's proprietary driver files extracted using b43-fwcutter because I do not know if a 32bit version of b43-fwcutter is available from the Debian sid repository (all I see is b43-fwcutter_019-4_ppc64el.deb which I assume is 64bit not 32bit.....?), I removed my Broadcom 802.11b/g PCMCIA card (BCM4306 chipset) prior to installing MintPPC.

So currently, I am using MintPPC with Mint-LXDE on my Pismo via Ethernet RJ-45 connection until and if I can get my WPA2 wi-fi connection sorted with your advice on how to get the needed b43legacy kernel driver installed for these chipsets;
BCM4301
BCM4306/2
BCM4306
*************************************
Regarding the above section on wifi, I have just tried my Broadcom 802.11b/g PCMCIA card and upon entering my WPA2 password, it has connected without any issues, so Jeroen, I presume that you anticipated what would be needed for using a Broadcom B43XX chipset 802.11b/g PCMCIA card for wifi as part of your standard 32bit PPC installer......many thanks for this! :)

At some point I will have to see how best to update Arctic Fox to version 27.9.19, i.e. which PPC 32bit variant.

BTW

1. I have used

su --login
dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

to set up the GB Apple keyboard layout.

2. I found that FN + brightness up (F2 key) / down (F1 key) controls the display brightness
but not volume down (F3 key), volume up (F4 key), and volume mute (F6 key).

3. The Mint Software Manager is inactive on the Pismo, as is trackpad right-click via CTRL.

4. Will it be possible to source a ppc32 version Debian/Mint laptop battery monitor applet, gdebi, snap, curl, vlc etc.?

5. If it is ppc32 portable, I would like to install Spotify for Linux as the Artic Fox browser is not compatible with the Spotify web app.

BTW Abiword is very sluggish and stuttery on the Pismo.....effectively unusable.....

You know, we have an entire Wiki dedicated to Linux on PowerPC for a reason. Maybe it should be stickied so people won't gloss over it.

Both the wireless firmware and Arctic Fox 19 are covered inside, with easy-to-use installers, might I add.

Thank you, your error message is exactly what I experienced with the MintPPC CD on my PowerBook G4, and as for my Pismo it wouldn't boot at all.
I now know to try booting in OF ;)

Incidentally I have Mint (Sarah XFCE) dual booting with Snow Leopard on my 2008 MacBook, and it has become my favourite distro.

Cheers :)

Hugh

Does your Pismo boot into OS X or 9.2.2 OK?
If not, then assuming the Pismo and installed OSs are OK, disconnect the internal rechargeable backup battery under the keyboard, and then boot the Pismo.

Sorry, I meant the Pismo won't boot the MintPPC CD at all. I will try OF some time.

I have a good PRAM battery so Tiger is booting nicely thank you ;)

Cheers :)

No worries. Glad to know Tiger is working nicely for you (IMHO it and Snow Leopard are the standout Mac OS versions - I use it, Leopard and Snow Leopard as my daily main systems ).

I am presently assessing MintPPC on my Pismo, having set up the GB Apple keyboard layout, and reduced the icon name font size to 9 so that the Wastebasket icon name on the desktop is on one line.

For some reason, Abiword is very sluggish; actually effectively unusable presently, e.g. it stutters on 'cursor drag and select' of text etc.

@verdantppc Shot in the dark, but maybe it's a configuration issue. Open up your home folder, press Ctrl + H, and see if there's a ".abiword" anywhere (which is essentially the equivalent to one of OS X's Application Support folders).

If there is, try deleting it, and then give AbiWord another shot.

I will add Arctic Fox 27.9.19 when I have the time to do it. I will add them for both the 32- and 64-bits repository. I will also try to compile your requested curl and snapd.

Thanks for the info how to boot the 32-bits installer from CD. I added your information to the official instructions.

With respect to changing volume and muting sound on the keyboard: try installing alsa-utils.

Please use the forum on my website, you will find info on how to enable right click. You will also other useful info there. It would also be nice to add your findings there.

Software Manager won't work (for the moment). I might completely take the option out in the future but I have some hope that I'll be able to fix Software Manager in the future.

I will have a look what I can do to have Spotify for MintPPC. I added this to my to-do list.

@Jeroen Diederen

Glad to help with the CD booting info. Thanks for replying and for considering my app requests. I will look at the forum on your website and will report on what works and does not work.

PulseAudio Volume Control on startup 'freezes' on "Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait..."

Hence, I am still trying to

1. Establish keyboard F3, F4 and F6 volume control given the PulseAudio issue and having installed alsa-utils.

2. Figure out the problem with Abiword essentially 'freezing' or 'stuttering' when trying to use it, e.g. copy, paste, cut etc.

In the meantime I am using Leafpad as it is working without any problems.

I have reported in your forum on modifying the mouseemu file to give key+click commands for right and middle mouse buttons.

@z970mp

Thanks for your suggestion but I did not find a .abiword file in Home using Ctrl+H

/etc/apt/sources.list, or apt edit-sources. The APT repositories.

I'm going to try to help you fix AbiWord. Something probably broke in the newer version that's causing the lag, so if you take out the version from whatever repository you're on now, and instead get a previous version from the Debian Jessie repositories, it might work.

Many thanks. Here are my current sources according to apt edit-sources:

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.0 _Sid_ - Unofficial powerpc NETINST 20190716->

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 10.0 _Sid_ - Unofficial powerpc NETINST 20190716-0>

deb http://ftp.ports.debian.org/debian-ports sid main
deb-src http://ftp.ports.debian.org/debian-ports sid main

## MintPPC repository
deb http://u58733p55594.web0093.zxcs-klant.nl/repo unstable main

I have purged the installed Abiword version from Debian sid.

I will see if I can find and install a version from the Debian Jessie repositories as a .deb file.....
