Day baseball... meh.

Gotta start our streak over again.

9 games over .500 so I'm pleased as punch.

I owe @ucfgrad93 an apology. I was rude and terse with you a few posts back and I'm sorry. If you had been around in the '70's you'd know what an abomination standard multipurpose stadiums were/are to baseball. But now a days even the NFL has it's different stadiums and the only thing standard is the playing field size. MLB has never been that way it to me it really is part of the appeal.

I remember visiting Fenway Park in 2007 with my dad. We were visiting Boston for a week and had especially got tickets to a couple of games. It was summer but not too hot, Daisuke Matsuzaka was pitching… good times.

That was a really fun Reds game to watch. Elly De La Cruz is insane. Hit for the Reds first cycle since 1989 tonight.

Giants also started a new win streak with a win over the D-Backs. Nice to start the series on a winning note.
Yeah, I think it's safe to say Elly is going to be special. I hope he keeps it up.

But I wouldn't mind Matos getting hot and finding his groove to compete stats ;)

That happens to be one of my bucket lists... A day game, a midweek day game, at Wrigley Field. Can't wait.

Kind of odd that there were three perfect games in 2012, and none since until last night.

I don't think I ever saw the Giants' home crowd as loud and excited and emotional as they were for Matt Cain's perfect game in 2012. Even Bonds' home run milestones and three pennant-clinching wins didn't compare.

The Giants would have...

The Giants have a grand total of 1 complete game this year, by Alex Cobb. Logan Webb is the only other viable candidate to throw over 100 pitches in a start.

Combined no-hitters and perfect games are still a thing, or are at least possible.

99 pitches... WOW... Just wow.
David Cone did it with 88.

But still, 99 is (obviously) an average of only 11 per inning. That is impressive. By definition, a perfect game will have a lower than usual pitch count, because there's never a ball four, and starting over with a new batter, likewise with a hit, error, etc.

Yeah, the pitcher throws a perfect game, but the defense has to make all the plays cleanly. I suspect, however, that more almost perfect game efforts are spoiled by batters reaching base some other way. To be more precise, I would expect that an error ending a perfect game occurs less than any other "spoiler" event taken individually.

In the last few years, I've heard announcers say that the ball doesn't have to "travel" all the way to the back of the first baseman's glove for the runner to be out on a close play. Instead, the ball just has to be "within the glove" whatever that means. What nonsense! 100% of the ball "within the glove" unlike for called strikes where just part of the ball has to penetrate the strike zone? But I digress. The difference between 100% of the ball being "within the glove" to the ball hitting the "back of the glove" is probably an inch, or two at the most, and a millisecond when the ball is thrown upwards of 85 mph.

Back in the day, announcers used to talk about how the first base umpire went by sound more that sight on close plays. That makes sense. The umpire can't see the ball and the players' feet at the same time. He can't hear anything at the instant that 100% of the ball is "within the glove" but he can sure hear when it hits leather.

Now that there's video review, has that standard actually changed? Going by super slow motion and freezing the picture, you can get pretty close to establishing when the ball is 100% "within the glove" but not with absolute certainty because the angle of the camera shot comes into play. But, once the ball is out of view, and the runner's foot is on or within a fraction of an inch of the base, all you can do is go with the call on the field. That makes this 100% of the ball "within the glove" a moot point, in my opinion.

What say you?

Giants falling back to earth. Mounting injuries, clutch hitting and pitching deserting them. That was a pretty tough road trip to swing through Toronto and New York, play a Sunday night game in NYC, then have to catch a red eye flight back to SF for a Monday night home game against a hot Mariners team.

Losing Thairo Estrada for any length of time is a tough blow.

I went to the Giants game yesterday and it was embarrassing. I think Gilbert had at least 3 innings where he only pitched 3 pitches. The All Star Break can't come soon enough for this team.
