Youre not wrong. With SD and NY, they certainly could make a bid for Ohtani but the likelihood of either one of them is next to zero. Ohtani has already said that he would prefer a west coast team, probably because of proximity to Japan.

With SD, they already have 3 contracts that they overspent on (Machado, Tatis jr. and Xander). Those three contracts alone make up what Ohtani will probably be offered in FA. There's a reason why SD hasnt signed Juan Soto to the mega deal he should have taken with the Nats lol. Theyre flat broke and the owner is pinching the pennies again.

As for NY, I just dont see it happening. I dont see Steinbrenner being ok with paying Ohtani AND going over the luxury tax by a lot. He's already got that problem with Judge, Stanton and Cole.

NY and SD might try to trade for him but signing him long term, nope.

Speaking of NY, Steve Cohen laughs at the luxury tax but he's ready to nuke the Mets as is so I dont see him going after Ohtani either.
SD is horrible this year so I'd be very surprised if they made any offer at all.

Cohen is killing the Mets? Good. Wish he could do the same for the bodgers and hankeees.

With the trade deadline fast approaching, its been surprisingly quiet though I think heading into this weekend things will certainly be heating up

I expect the Yankees to be doing everything they can. With the 2nd highest payroll in MLB, being in last place and barely over 500. Its an embarrassing situation. There's still a lot of baseball to be played and once Judge comes back, they should start climbing up.

Conversely I think the Mets are going to be having a fire sale. With the highest payroll in MLB and so far under 500, they need to blow up the team. If they're smart they'll unload all of the high priced under performing players for draft picks and start building up their farm system

As a Red Sox fan, I could care less what the Yankees do at the trade deadline. However...I agree that if they want to be a contender for the post season, they'll have to make some drastic moves. Donaldson is as good as done. Judge wont get back to being Judge until probably end of August. The BIGGEST surprise has been the Orioles and I'm kind of glad to see them on top of the AL East. But only kind of...

The Mets are the biggest joke right now. If anything, this years Mets and the un-godly amount of money they spent on FA's proves that you dont need big price tag players to win anything. You need REAL talent. At one point or another, Verlander, Lindor, Scherzer and anyone else they signed had real talent (and perhaps still do) but they are wasting away with the Mets.

Judge back in the lineup tonight to rescue the Yankees.

It's funny, he's not injury prone in the traditional sense. He's just had a bunch of freak accidents. Last time was victim of a broken Dodgers Stadium fence (or maybe the fence was just a victim of him lol)

I think that's sort of the definition of injury prone. No matter what you call it, or how you slice it, the man has spent a lot of time away from baseball because of injuries - more then most other players.

I'm really surprised by the Yankees basically staying out of the trade frenzy yesterday. The Mets held what could only be described as a fire sale, unloading some expensive under-performing talent and getting some young prospects in return.

Boston largely stayed quiet but I'm not surprised by that - they're basically at the bottom of the division and that was the expectation. The Yankees however were projected to be in the world series, and yet here we are on August 2nd, they're in last place.

Last year when they under-performed, I said they needed to get rid of Boone, yet they stuck by him. Now with this season looking mighty bleak (though there's still two months of baseball left) his seat may finally be getting hot. Lack of movement before the trade deadline may also doom Cashman as well.

The Met's offloading Scherzer AND Verlander is beyond hilarious.

As for the Red Sox and Yankees...Cashman and Bloom have A say in what players they get/dont get but they dont have THE FINAL say. That all comes down to ownership. I would imagine they looked at what Steve Cohen just did and said "Nah, I think we're fine". They dont want to spend (in their minds) UN-necessarily because the money they already have wrapped up in their current rosters is what they are comfortable with. The FANS will always scream about needing to get player X and player Y for reasons but ultimately, it comes down to the owners not wanting to spend out of fear that their ROI wont be immediate.

All that being said, if the Yankees or Red Sox arent in the post season again, it will be the same circle jerk it always is.

Ownership: Well, we missed the playoffs again. This is unacceptable.
GM: You said we couldn't get new trades because of the luxury tax.
Ownership: Our current roster can win. They're just not trying hard enough.
GM: Half of our roster is hurt and some are out for the rest of the season. We need replacements.
Ownership: Make it work with what we got.
GM: Fine.
Team Manager: WTF?
Fans: You ALL suck...
Ownership: We know we disappointed our fans this year but come next year, we'll be in better shape. You'll see!
GM: *whispers* Not if we dont spend.
Team Manager: *Slams head into brick wall*
Fans: Ugh...fine. Here's another $1000 for season tickets...

I think the Yankees are in a different spot then the Red Sox - the issue as I see it (and I'm not a yankees fan) is that there's been an expectation for them to reach the world series. It seems other then Judge, those overly hyped baby bombers failed to deliver. The free agents and/or players traded for, also failed to live up to advertising.

As for the Red Sox, I think they never dug themselves out of the hole that Ben Cherington dug (signing free agents to monster contracts and raiding the farm system). Since his departure they've largely refused to pay players high contracts. When they actually re-signed Chris Sale to a large contract look how that worked out.

I think the Red Sox ownership is content where things are. Just looking back to 2019, the red sox have largely been a .500 ball club - give or take a percentage or two.

2nd paragraph... lol

Although the BoSox and GIANTS* are in the biggest loser section... meh.

* For good reason too!

I've always had a soft spot for the Tigers, as well. Alan Trammell and Sweet Lou up the middle and Sparky Anderson pulling the strings. The 1984 World Series winners had several ex-Giants, so I was pleased for them.

My grandfather liked to tell the story about he and some of his brothers and cousins drove up from Iowa to Detroit to catch a Tigers game in 1934. Someone near the stadium gave them stick about their out of state license plate, so the 5 big, strapping farm boys got out of the car, and their tormentor suddenly got really quiet! I hope my grandfather got to see Hank Greenberg hit one a long, long way.

It looks like the Angels big moves to keep Ohtani are going down the toilet. I think they lost 8 in a row now. And the weird thing to me, the vibe I get is, even if the Angels somehow make the playoffs, I don't think Ohtani stays anyways. Seems like he's had enough.

Cant say that I'm surprised, but also I think they failed to have a long range vision of their team. While it would be ideal to re-sign him, the odds of him going to a new team was near certainty. They basically will see him walk away and get nothing in return. Had they traded him, they could have gotten some some great prospects
