Cant say that I'm surprised, but also I think they failed to have a long range vision of their team. While it would be ideal to re-sign him, the odds of him going to a new team was near certainty. They basically will see him walk away and get nothing in return. Had they traded him, they could have gotten some some great prospects

I agree overall, but how do you trade the (presumable) MVP? The guy is a freak, it would be like trading Babe Ruth. The fan base would crash. The Angels were in a no-win scenario. 500-600 million is the number floated, but if the Angels were to convince him to re-sign, it would have to be 700-750 - something crazy that he couldn't turn down.

No question and the fans would be mad as hell, but if he walks, the team is going to be worse off, at least they could have done something to make that bitter pill go down.

I hear that often, and being from boston, it stings because the then owner of the Red Sox discounted his worth. The Red Sox were winning world series, who knew this one player would cause their downfall and be known the curse. Secondly, there was nothing like free agents in the 1920s and finally the owner was an idiot for trading Ruth for money to fund the play No, No, Nanette

something crazy that he couldn't turn down.
No doubt, and its possible, but do you think they'll raise that bar so high that the entire MLB would be so mad and pissed off by raising that bar so high, that other great players will strive that money?

Yes, but how many guys can hit 50 homers AND win 15 games? His bat alone is worth 500 million.

I'm not disagreeing, but I just don't see them being able to or willing to do that very thing, and then pissing off the rest of MLB. Just look at how the owners received the watson contract that cleveland did, they all were pissed because they were afraid Cleveland just raised the bar higher

This is kind of humorous, heaven help me, but I have to defend Boone on this one, he's right. The outside calls were horrible. I don't understand why some umps have to be skewed to one side so much. It alters the perspective on the opposite side.

I don't understand why managers have to challenge umps. It won't sway them (in fact, just the opposite) and all they do is hurt their team by sitting in the clubhouse.

While Diaz missed almost 20 ball/strike calls in the game, the one that prompted Boone to challenge him was actually a strike, which Boone admitted in the post game interview. However, missed ball/strike calls is my number one gripe about the game. They can fix it, but have chosen not to. And they should be able to demote bad umpires, but the union is too strong. There are almost zero consequences for umps who are incompetent.

Yep completely agree. That's why I'm a big proponent of that robo-ump

Buck Showalter - So let me ask folks here - why do so many people think he's a great manager. It appears that his job is safe in NY, (at least rumored) which I don't understand. I mean if you have a stacked roster and are in last place, a lot of the blame for that falls on the manager's shoulders. Yet he always seems to be a media darling.

Looking at his record he's basically a .500 manager who never won a pennant, only gotten past the division playoffs once. As Parcells once said you're only as good as your record. His record is decidedly meh

Baseball is just as bad as any sport. The habit of just recylcing the same guys over and over, instead of thinking outside the box.

I don't!

Whenever I see he's headed somewhere I have to laugh.

He doesn't seem like the kind of guy players would respect.

I believe he's a quick, safe, relatively inexpensive placeholder manager.

I believe he's a quick, safe
I don't think he's safe, and given what the owners were looking to do, i.e., buy a world series, I don't think he was the right person. I don't know who that could have been, but I do know who the wrong people would be - Buck is firmly entrenched in that camp

I really don't care simply because its a NY team, and Boston has its own problems. Cora brought a world series to boston but what has he done lately? I'm not saying they should fire Cora but the Red Sox management should not be content with being at the bottom of the division.

Safe as in an "old school baseball guy" and a fairly decent baseball mind... but yeah given that he's screwed the pooch so thoroughly this season, again, I can take "safe" out of my description of him.

He didn't mess up the Orioles, that was sinking ship when he got there, but look how they've bloomed since he left... maybe we need to go back and see what has happened to all the other teams he's managed and then left?

Someone can kiss their career goodbye...

I know it's innocent until proven guilty but if this is true AND it involves a minor, just lock him up now.

I wonder if Boone or Cashman's seat is getting warm.

I expect the Yankees to finish over .500, and maybe even claw themselves out of the cellar. While passing the Red Sox in the standings is feasible, catching and passing the other teams, may prove to be insurmountable.

Someone or some people have to pay for the utter failure of what 2023 is turning out to be. Boone's record is worse then the manager he replaced - Joe Girardi. At least Girardi brought a world series to NY.
