they initiated a slow, drawn out, tear down and rebuild
Here's the thing, while I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, I do wonder if Henry is happy to just tear down the team and make it good enough. He the owner makes a ton more money by only have an adequate team, then paying for talent that would garner top dollar. Its not hard to sell out Fenway, and while its already the most expensive park in MLB

And Trout is back on the IL...again.
Mere hours after coming off of it. I'll say it again, they were fools to keep Ohtani, they could have gotten a treasure trove of young talent, now he's going to walk and not having anyting to show, and Trout will not have any help.

Not a bad way to make a good first impression on a new team.

The deadline for having a player on the 40-man roster for postseason eligibility used to be September 1st, so De Jong should be OK if the Giants can claw back a wildcard slot.
well dang.

4th and 0.5 game back in the Wild Card...

That was my thinking as well. Tear down the team that just brought you another ring because it's going to be cheaper in the long run.

Financially, I get it. Instead of having to pay 40+ $100 mil+ contracts to retain a WS team, you nuke it and only pay the "faces". If that's the case though, it says a lot about the front office if Mookie and Xander walked away from what they were offering. But the flip side to that is Scott Boras is a leech and a snake and will inflate players worth soooo much that no team will be able to afford them, as the case with Xander. The only reason SD took his contract was because they wanted to buy a ring and they're still a dumpster fire.

That being said, I think they are rebuilding for after 24. Casas, Durran, and Bello are leading the charge of the new talent who will be under team control for another couple of years.

Casas’ second half of the season has been a pleasant surprise, hitting 20 hr’s in your rookie year is not bad, and the season isn’t over yet. Yoshida has proven to be a good purchase too.

But certainly this years Red Sox were built out of a lot of mismatched pieces. They had a few good moments but I think they’re too inconsistent to do much in the postseason, if they even make the wild card places.

I wonder what will come of the Padres in the offseason. Their attempt to buy a WS failed - 3rd highest payroll in MLB

Seeing the list via spotrac, I'm actually surprised to see the Rangers there. I don't follow them, but I thought they had a young team. The Red Sox is in 13th place which bolsters my conspiracy theory that John Henry is only interested in fielding a team good enough to fill seats at Fenway

Ouch, the top 3 teams in payroll all under .500.

I suspect Chaim Bloom’s brief was to transform the Red Sox into a team that works on pitching talent, and we have yet to see whether that works out.

I'm going to pull for Baltimore or Texas...

Dude, if Baltimore makes it to the playoffs, I'll tip my cap to them. The fact that they are at the very top in the hardest division of all of MLB says a lot...
Its a tight race to be sure

Tampa is only two games behind in the division, there is no margin for error with Tampa winning 8 out of their last games. As for the wild card, Tampa is currently at the top with a 6 game cushion. So I think if neither team collapses both should make the playoffs.

Texas because of Bochy?

Baltimore because they are orange & black like us? :p

It's not just the Bochy factor: the Rangers have a ton of offensive talent. Their bullpen looks a bit ehhh, but there's none better than Bochy at managing relief pitchers in the postseason.

Wearing orange and black is a plus, but the O's stuck to their rebuild plans and drafted well.

Guess I'll root for them too... ;)

It's official: money doesn't buy happiness in the MLB. Teams need to admit that a roster built up from a good farm system is critical to its success.

Dave Dombrowski may disagree with you, he raided his farm system, picked up some expensive players and brought a world series not to one club, but two. Florida Marlins and Boston Red Sox. In the wake of his actions he totally decimated two franchises by his actions but he got them a world series. It remains to be seen if his methodology will bring a world series to Philadelphia.

The thing is, it’s not that common for even a very good team to pick up multiple World Series. Bruce Bochy’s Giants did it in 2012, before that it was Joe Torre’s Yankees in 2000. At the moment the Astro’s seem to play tough every year and be in or near the World Series every year, but they’ve won only two a good few years apart, like the Red Sox did.

I just think no one has yet figured out a good way to build historically good teams, and even getting just one World Series seems to be based partly on luck. Dave Dombrowski’s methods don’t bring every team an instant World Series. Or a way to keep evolving a good team so that it can win over a number of years.

It’s debatable whether you can call the 2022 Astros the same team as the 2017 Astros. Certainly the 2018 Red Sox had a very different look than the 2013 Red Sox.

COBB WAS ONE OUT AWAY FROM A NO HITTER!

3 game win streak!

A complete game to boot!!

So close, but a win is a win.

The most dramatic recent near-miss by a Giants pitcher was Yusmeiro Petit losing a perfect game on the 27th batter. Hunter Pence came agonizingly close to that sinking line drive to right, but it wasn't meant to be.

Growing up a Giants fan in the late 70s, I never got to see a Giants pitcher throw a no hitter for decades. Jonathan Sanchez finally ended the drought in 2009, we got Matt Cain's perfect game in 2012, and off-peak Tim Lincecum tossed a couple of no-nos. Living in New York, I got to watch Chris Heston's no hitter on the Mets' broadcast.
