the iPad was bolted to a desk let us not forget, and the previous releases of iPhones that have been leaked pre launch have always been leaks from factories etc. This just doesn't seem at all right to me.

you have to remember that a PHONE has to be tested in the wild to get an accurate representation on how the cell performance is and not just in one location.

If you found this phone and Gizmodo offered you $5,000 to send it to them, I think it would end up in their hands as well.

I would ask for a counter from Apple before giving it to them. ;)

That Gizmodo has it in-hand and has posted video seals it. I hope that there are refinements to the design -- I don't like those seams, for one thing -- but there can be no doubt about the authenticity of this prototype.

How does that seal it?

It's real funny how everyone likes this design now. Just yesterday 95% of the population here was COMPLAINING about the design. Lol. You guys are a funny bunch.

Well now there's a side by side comarision with the 3gs.

I agree, it is a PHONE however, the point I was illustrating was that if they bolted the iPad down INSIDE an Apple building, then surely those who were trusted to take the iPhone outside were given very very strict instructions to guard it with their life. It would have been like sending your kid to school with a £50 note in their pocket to give to someone. You would tell them over and over, don't lose it, don't lose it.

well after reading that it looks like its real and the next iPhone! the design may have changed or be changed though, you never know.

liking the front facing camera, flash, removable battery and the screen!

Indeed. If this was real Apple's Legal Department would be all over this...and nothing.

Well apple does want it back, but if they came out with lawyers we would know it's legit, but by keeping their mouth shut it would keep people guessing if it's real or not.

I have an suspicion!

I think the reason for the switch from the single 'rocker' volume button to the 2 separate buttons if first off to reduce space to make the iPhone thinner, but also to give the option to select either the "volume up button" as the rear camera or the "volume down button" as the front-facing camera.

. . . Makes sense to me.

I thought engadget found it first now they all have their hands on it? And didn't apple say they wanted it back? Wouldn't gizmodo or engadget give it back? Kinda easy to trace down public website editors...

Weird...

I agree that there's definitely some fishyness to this whole story, but there really is no denying this is a legit Apple iPhone. Weather or not this is the final product who knows. It could be a controlled leak (which is a very un-Apple-like thing to do) to see the reaction. Or it could be something else.

I can't wait for the unveiling of this thing. The keynote should be rather entertaining. :D

No, Engadget just got their hands on pictures. Apparently Gizmodo has been playing with this phone for a week and have been dissecting it. That's how they have this whole write-up. They were just teasing us until they posted this article.

I'm waiting for those who said the iPhone doesn't need a replaceable battery to start saying how great it is that there's a replaceable battery. I envision a response like this:

"Apple's replaceable battery. It just works."

or

"Apple didn't want to put a replaceable battery in the iPhone until it was perfected." (Read as: Apple wanted to make sure you could only use Apple batteries)

The only problem I see with this 'control leak' is that if Apple did a remote wipe. Which I am sure that they would. Wouldn't they have a Mobile Me like GPS tracker to ensure that they could find any prototypes that might have gone missing.

If they wanted it they would have it.

That makes me think even more that it is a controlled leak.

How does that seal it?

Or maybe its an elaborate forgery.... at this point, I stand neutral, I don't dismiss it, but I don't believe its accurate 100%

Have you watched the video, looked at the pictures, and read the article? It cannot possibly be a fake (iTunes even recognizes the thing as an iPhone, after all), and it is clearly a pretty advanced pre-production testing model. Producing a fake that would fool Gizmodo when they have complete physical access to it and can do a tear-down would be prohibitively expensive and probably impossible for anyone but Apple. Designing a product that well integrated costs millions of dollars and takes months, even for a company like Apple. What possible motivation could anyone (even Apple) have for spending that much money to create a functional fake like this?
