people always need something to complain about.

better receptions = plastic over the AL casing. plain and simple.
it might not be the best choice to be as 'glossy' as it is, but i'm sure they tried matte too.

I sure hope your right that the AL will get better reception. No complains though here on the first gen.

While some of you will complain about the plastic for its cheaper look, most people will be appreciating the extra signal strength of the various radio modules due to the plastic back causing less interference, and consequently an increased battery life. Just test out the distance you can receive an Airport signal on a plastic MacBook, versus and Aluminium MBP. It's about twice as receptive.

excactly. or even my current iphone often times doesnt' read a weak signal that my macbook does. i think the plastic will improve function which should always be a consideration over form. apple usually finds a way to meld the two demands of their users - function + aesthetics. i can't say whether or not i'm a fan of the plastic yet since i haven't held one. we'll see on friday.

Original iPhone with aluminum back = sexy as hell.

3G iPhone with polycarbonate back = ugly as sin.

Just my honest opinion.

The first gen iphone wasn't

The first gen does however dent very easily. You should see mine, and I'm not even that rough on it...

my first gen looks immaculate and I'm not very gentle with it

I think people's big beef with the plastic is not the fact that its plastic but the fact that they chose to use glossy rather than matte.

I mean, think blackbook...i don't remember anyone complaining about it. Now imagine if the blackbook was glossy and shiny and left finger prints. Ew.

I'm in favor of plastic...i was just hoping for matte to match my blackbook.

I guess heres the take home lesson...

If you own an first gen iPhone invest in a nice case so you won't get all those ugly dents.

If you own a second generation (3G) iPhone invest in a nice Aluminum case so you still have a iphone that looks pretty.
:D

who cares what the back looks like, you're not going to be looking at it anyway.

plastic makes for better reception and a more affordable price

What ever happened the back our product looks better than the front of theirs!

This is new:

Both screens are 480x320, but the EDGE display (left) is 160 pixels per inch (PPI) and the 3G display (right) is 163 PPI.

So the new screen is smaller, despite the iPhone 3G being larger...

There's nothing wrong with Apple going the plastic route. I don't see what's the complaining about the plastic all about.

Why is the white iPhone 3G so hard to get to see on these early releases?
It's always black that shown.

Plastic makes everyone think of China.

matte black would get glossy spots from wear and tear quickly. Phones are made to be in pockets, taking a lot of beating and rubbing. I like the playtic on the bottom of the EDGE iPhone, still looks like new, minor fingerprints.

By the way, pictures taken with a flash tend to make fingerprints visible that are very faint in normal light.

I tend to like the alum model better, but I understand the shift to plastic to get the price down and allow for GPS...I sometimes feel like I don't have a solid grip on my iphone very well, it's too thin...I think a combo of the 3G shape and alum back would be a solid design, although I'm sure they tried that...

Nonetheless, if you were going to reinvent the phone, you couldn't have done it better than the design they came up with for the 1st gen.

Here's my 2 cents:

Yeah yeah... the plastic sucks (visually). The aluminum was nice, and felt luxury, but perhaps it isn't so great for reception (perhaps not... who knows). Anyway, Steve should have explained why they changed it so everyone would know for sure but assuming its for reception - what can you do? If you hate it that much I'm sure there will be a company that will apply an aluminum back after market for you. If your reception sucks and GPS doesn't work at that point... well you got a nice looking brick right? If it works great still... well then you get a great looking iPhone 3G that hardly anyone else has.

No it isn't. This is what caused people to freak out, because they were worried that the screen from the Touch was going in the new 3G. (Touch is 163ppi)

Also... smaller? No, but the screen does have a more prominent border now.

Who cares really. A ton of the people complaining on here aren't even going to purchase the phone anyway, and probably 3-7 people who post on here have even seen/held/touched one of these in person.

My 2G iPod nano (aluminum tube) had some ugly dents. all the plack was gone at the corners. On my Edge iPhone, the aluminum around the silent switch is a little warped, that could potentially make the switch unusable. Plastic is a better material for cell phones. lighter, sturdier, less prone to dents and permanent, warping, cheaper, antennae-signal-friendly... this is a win-win situation.

Also, the more rounded shape probably does a lot in terms or ergonomy. I don't know why they made the 3G phone wider and the screen smaller though... the 3G phone has a thicker frame around the display which looks kinda odd...

Long Live...

I'm still very partial to the look of the original iPhone. I'd rather have my nice metal finish than the gloss. I would like 3g and GPS, but I'd rather have the thinner/classier looking phone over those 2 things.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice looking, but OG iPhone fits the current high end apple product look (iMacs/MBP), its thinner, it's just overall a nicer, quality looking product.

This is the first time I've seen apple take a step back in design while taking a step forward in performance.
