Like every other phone out there and every one you've owned prior to the first iPhone. What a surprise. I mean NO one makes plastic phones these days.

Sony Ericsson hat some aluminum phones back in the day (T610). That thing looked like crap pretty quickly with warped and dented casing. The newer ones are all plastic.

No it isn't. This is what caused people to freak out, because they were worried that the screen from the Touch was going in the new 3G. (Touch is 163ppi)

Also... smaller? No, but the screen does have a more prominent border now.

Ah, ok. Well, you wouldn't relly notice any difference. I've held my iPhone next to an iPod touch a few times and the screen look like they're exactly the same size. The Touch seems to have some flicker though.

Apple said that the screen itself its the same size, and it it...but if you look at the black frame around the screen..its a lot thicker then the other one... not much to notice...but its a tiny bit wider.

compare the sizes of the chrome surround and then revisit your conclusion.

cheap

Im a gen 1 owner, and In my opinion the new one is cheap, looks wider, and i dont like the rounded back, the cases will make it look 10x bigger, then the original. And the plastic looks like its going to scratch by u just touching it.
looks like the cheap cost is reflecting!

who cares what the back looks like, you're not going to be looking at it anyway.

plastic makes for better reception and a more affordable price

Better reception, I still haven't seen one shred of proof about this anywhere. The Motorola Razr is not made of plastic, nor was the previous POS Motorola phone I had before that. If someone has a study related to this, I'll cede all points about the reception, but my iPhone gets pretty damn good reception.

As for more affordable price, please take a look at the non-contract prices of the iPhone 3G. $600 and $700. They somehow made the first-gen iPhone out of aluminum and priced it at $400. You're paying more for it over the life on the contract in the U.S., so it's not really "more affordable." Plus: black and white? That's it? That's such a Seinfeld episode.

I'm still very partial to the look of the original iPhone. I'd rather have my nice metal finish than the gloss. I would like 3g and GPS, but I'd rather have the thinner/classier looking phone over those 2 things.

Well you know what to do then.

I think the new iPhone looks great, and while I would like one, I'll stay with my first-gen iPhone for now. After all, I'll get the software for free.

Apple is selling iPhones like they do computers, I think. Next year, they'll release the third-generation iPhone and a new OS; my guess is that this OS will not be available (at least, for free) for iPhone 1.0 customers (either that, or it will be the last release which will be free for first-gen owners).

The T610 was a plastic case painted to look metallic. I know, it's what I had before my iPhone.

people complained about the first iPhone generation.

people complain about the second iPhone generation

people will complain about the third iPhone generation

people will complain about the fourth iPhone.........

some things never change.

Had mine for like 4 years, and it is not warped or dent. I just keep it my pocket. I think it would only dent if you are careless and drop it (well, which most ppl are).

So from the screen shots it looks like we will be able to have a calendar synced with Exchange, our bookmarks with MobileMe and contacts with either as well all at the same time (but only one instance of it, but any combo that you want) - anyone know for certain if this is the case?

The bottom (black area) on the original iPhone is plastic. That is where the antenna is. All plastic back will be fine. Apple has learned a lot from their iPod casing experience and I would expect the plastic back will be very durable. And possibly interchangeable....

You mean replacable by Apple. So Apple now can replace the battery for a fee, and the back casing for a fee... (if you feel it is too scratched).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

The 3G sure looks chunkier. I wonder if it feels the same weight wise as I do like the heft of my 2G. Hey, I wonder if Safari is "snappier" on the new 3G?

Am I the only one disappointed that Apple basically went backwards with its design? It sounds shallow, but I'm seriously considering not upgrading because I think the 1st gen iPhone looks SO much better than the new one... *sigh*

No you're not the only one.YES it is unspeakably bind-blowingly incomprehensibly shallow.
But,to each his own!Maybe you'll like the 3rd gen better.

Are you kidding? They're going to cut off first generation owners after 2 years? You're paying at least $60/month in the US for the phone plan, which is why those updates are free (and probably will be until new software literally won't work on a new device). I have NO idea where you came up with that. There would be a revolt on our hands.
