I enjoyed my 1st gen iPhone, but I think the 2nd gen looks much sharper. I could care less about the aluminum back. Who looks at the back. Same with fingerprints. The back might show prints, but no more than the front does, and that is what everybody looks at. I hated that 2 tone back. It should of been one piece like the new one. Lastly, the new shape fits the hand so much better they say. I never dropped mine, but the metal back did make it feel real slick that you felt like you were going to drop it.

Silver cloud?

Am I the only one disappointed that Apple basically went backwards with its design? It sounds shallow, but I'm seriously considering not upgrading because I think the 1st gen iPhone looks SO much better than the new one... *sigh*

Agree... the back of this one looks non-descript. Aluminium was much better.

And how soft & scratch-able the plastic will be is anyone's guess..... I for one am going to wait until its been user tested.

I have a Blackberry with no case/cover and its almost pristine after 2 years of being thrown into my pockets with my keys, etc....

That's because RIM makes products that are durable and functional. Apple makes products that belong in museums in climate controlled cleanrooms.

I completely agree. After a year we all expected Apple to take 2 steps forward, instead they took 2 steps back.

This from Apple is a complete surprise. For everyone excited about 3G and GPS give me a break. Other phones have had these things for years!

The iPod was Apple's saviour. Could the iPhone be Apple's demise?

Glorious Technicolor

You mean replacable by Apple. So Apple now can replace the battery for a fee, and the back casing for a fee... (if you feel it is too scratched).

But did you see the exposed screws? They are ripe for opening up!

Surely a budding accessory maker will be able to produce backs in rainbows of colours....

Anyone else think the screws near the dock connector will allow for replaceable back plates (hopefully an alum/plastic bottom)? I would love for it to be true but I can't imagine Apple wanting your average joe snooping around in there...

As for replaceable batteries- there is absolutely no need for one, and if you are talking/using your phone that much in one day where you can't recharge it each night....go outside and breathe some fresh air before global warming takes over.

Not to mention at least half of last year's August keynote was all about Apple "going green" and how all of its consumer products are being "upgraded" to aluminum and glass. But that's Apple for you. Constantly flip-flopping. One day, titanium is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The next day, it's old hat. One day, aluminum and glass is the way to go. The next day, we were just kidding and have always believed in the power of plastic.

The screws are there because they need to be, just like on the MacBook. With plastic, they likely can't do a clip/hook type of bonding like they can with the metal products like the iPod.

Yeah, you know... one of those similar services that... Doesn't exist!
I think you missed my point. Apple is pushing MobileMe because they will earn $99/year. They don't want you using Microsoft Live or Google or Yahoo!, which all provide free services that are very similar.

Oh..My..God!!
The (rest of the)back is plastic and Apple's going out of business?Give ME a break!

I'm exited about GPS and 3G because the iPHONE has never had it!!
Hopefully someone will take the back off an 1st gen phone and tape it to a 3G to check reception and settle this(though some will fret and whine forever).

I think the black one looks cool-kind of like the photon torpedo casing they buried Spock in in "Wrath of Khan"!
Now I can stand in a cave somwhere and scream KHHHHHHAAAAAAN!!! into it like Shatner!

God forbid Apple uses plastic in their products... (Macbook, white iMac, Airport Extreme, Mighty Mouse, etc.)

If you don't like it, don't buy it. Apple knows what they are doing. We question them like we're shareholders and we're scared Apple, Inc. is going downhill.

Apple, Inc is going strong right now and is only picking up steam.

the Original iPhone was fine and dandy, but obviously Apple wanted to make changes and they went with plastic. There were probably several reasons for doing this. We do not know why...

All I know is I'm getting one and I'm going to enjoy it and I'm not going to be staring at the back all day asking why they switched to plastic.

Change in iPhone face

THERE IS MORE BLACK ON THE FACE OF THE PHONE BETWEEN THE SCREEN AND THE CHROME ON THE SIDES. IT LOOKS MORE LIKE THE FACE OF THE iPOD TOUCH IN THIS REGARD

No, I got your point. You are trying to say that another service with the features of MobileMe for $0 actually exists. That's not the case.

Holy overly dramatic. The phone is not about the materials it's made with, it's about its functionality, and it's potential. Try not to be such an idiot next time you post.

If you are worried about the plastic, avoid these forum trolls and take your advice from people who have actually used the new phone:

"The metal backing of the initial device has been superseded by a sturdy glossy plastic. The phone feels perfectly comfortable in my palm." - Ed Baig

"The other improvements are smaller, but welcome. For example, the new iPhone feels even better in your hand, thanks to a gracefully curved, shiny plastic back." - David Pogue

plastic looks cheap and

WTF is with the bottom i mean it looks like a cheap case

this thing has gone down hill

i mean the old one looked just like the iMac even the speaker wholes match

Is there any sense yet of the quality of the plastic back? I assume we haven't yet had an opportunity to test its scratch resistance.
