nope

Or if the software on the wireless chip can be upgraded by flashing it.

One thing Apple did recently is announce that it would upgrade both the iPhone and AppleTV over time, and at that time, pundits speculated this was to overcome the $2 fee fiasco that Apple went through to upgrade/activate the 802.11n capabilities already built into some WiFi chips.

Now, if it is possible, Apple could upgrade/activate hardware on your iPhone (i.e., converting EDGE to 3G) without running into trouble with the "generally accepted accounting principles".

Absolutely not. That would be super presumptuous of anyone to do provided the strict FCC requirements. To attempt to slide something by them would be a huge mistake.

If the device is capable of use on a specific band, that has to be disclosed to the FCC or else you will have a product that is in violation of FCC requirements.

1) Battery drain: Insignificant and mostly depends on the phone itself, NOT .

See my comment above. You bring up some good points. Then again we are where we are. You can buy now or wait.

Obviously apple chose 2.5 for a reason. maybe iSupply can tell us what a 3g iphone would have cost on june 29th. Because those are the breaks. We don't have all the parts / costs info one can choose to buy the arguments or not.

But as off today. We can't buy a 3g, and I'd rather have one on friday then wait any longer then later, as I want one with GPS which should be included with the 3G version , pick up antother one in Jan?

And I live in the Pac. Pallisades.

The whole darn area has no Blue (3g)!

Did anyone else think the girl on the right (non blonde) of pogue's video was extremely HOT!?

It's looking like all the initial reports are positive.... Hope it continues to live up to the hype!

Has anyone heard news of a rumor that either Paul McCartney or the Beatles may be part of the launch? I read an article this morning on Metue (found here: http://metue.com/06-26-2007/mccartney-iphone/) that was speculating it might be possible. Apparently McCartney has been playing small last minute concerts and is in California. The author osaid it was probably not likely but assembled facts including the info on Paul that shows why it might be possible. Anyone have any idea, any info? Beatles on the iPhone would be awesome.

True, and I have it on good accord from a few ATT "insiders" that a 3G iPhone 2.0 will be out around the Holidays, maybe even sooner. As great as it looks, I'll wait till then to buy one. At that point, any kinks will be worked out and the long wait lines will most likely be reasonable, assuming there still are waiting lines.

Cool! thanks for the inside info.

that does match with a Euro launch. (they said before the end of the year as I am sure you know.)

i live in philadelphia, pa which has plenty of 3g coverage, but i go to school in syracuse, ny which has no 3g coverage... so ill only be losing out for when i am home... so it wont bother me that much anyway because i wont benefit most of the time... i understand that this phone should have 3g, but i bet half the people complaining that it doesnt, dont even live in an area where it is offered... it only offered in major metropolitan areas...

Do you seriously believe some random person on the internet and their claim they know R. Stephenson or S. Jobs or their executive assistants?

nice... it has an apple logo (see video review to get the lame joke).

Not that I want to review his review but the acting was a little un-necessary.

You aren't familiar with David Pogue, are you? :)
Check out the bottom of that link for even more un-necessary acting and lame jokes as he reviews other products :D

Yes and No.

All I know is that Euro iphone is planned for this fall and apple will not (IMO) go to Europe with a 2.5 g phone.. they are more advanced with their faster coverage over there.

You don't think apple is going to Europe with a 2.5 iphone do you? I mean I guess it's possible but not likely at all IMO>

Oh, grow up. I spoke with a few ATT people in NYC who were there for an iPhone regional meeting. My friend works as a general manager for a Cingular/ATT store. When we spoke I mentioned my disappointment in the lack of 3G, to which he (and a few other regional managers and ATT wireless management) said to wait for the Fall/Holiday season as the revision will be available with 3G. I didn't say I spoke with Steve Jobs or the CEO of ATT.

I am a regular reader of Pogue's blog and other postings and I love the way that he writes and criticizes consumer electronics regardless of who manufacturers them. I believe that he has addressed all of the major PROS and CONS with the iPhone. I won't list them out because most of you already know them, he just gave us visual proof that they are true.

There are a couple of things that I haven't seen or heard anyone really talk about since it unveiled at MacWorld: (1) are subscribers still receiving a Yahoo! IMAP Mail push account and (2) how does Safari know if you are clicking on a link or trying to zoom in or out?

A few weeks ago, an article about McCartney in the New Yorker said the he was supposed to play a few songs at the announcement of the iPhone (MWSF), but ended up canceling to spend time with his daughter.

All the reviews seem great. Sounds like Apple has a real winner. I fell into the wait and see category when I realized that it doesn't have IM support. Now if they could make Adium for the iphone, then it's a go. :(

I don't think that the reason it doesn't have 3G is because it's not everywhere, a viable excuse. Phones on Cingular that are 3G will automatically switch to EDGE if it's in an area where 3G isn't available.

- Voice call quality was good, but not great
- Can't record video
- No Adobe Flash support
- Songs can't be set as ringtones

From Walt's review, those points worry me. I like to record videos on my current phone and download them to my Mac. Sometimes a video is worth a thousand words. Ringtones, not so much. I make my own using Audacity, then upload them to my phone. However it would be nice if a 30 second clip of iTunes songs could be used as a ringtone. Voice quality has me worried. Cingular/ATT RAZR v3m were/are notorious for having low volume issues, and many owners (including myself) had to use a Windows machine to hack the system to increase the overall volume. If this applies to the iPhone, I doubt it will be any time soon (if at all) that users will be able to increase call volumes. Especially in NYC, where street traffic/noise makes listening to phone calls a challenge (and let's not talk about the horrible volume/quality of current market bluetooth headsets).

The iPhone is a fantastic device, but again, IMO, I'll wait for version 2.0 (and hopefully and increase in flash memory will allow for more multimedia, as well as 3G).

"The EDGE network actually has two speeds, and when you’re on the slower one, Web pages load up with what feels like dial-up speed."

It's nice looking, but I don't see the appeal. You can't carry an extra battery, slow internet when off wifi(even though it cost an arm and a leg), call quality is said to be "ok", and you can't even toss in a flash card of any kind.

How many people really walk around with extra batteries in their pocket? I think this is a niche need, mostly business travellers.

Anyway, while you can't pop in an extra batter you CAN use a dock-connector battery pack (several alrady available for iPods) so you can have extra juice (either rechargable or AA) for those occasions. Problem solved.

Personally, I think the battery thing is a non-issue. iPhone has great battery life and you can use battery packs when that won't cut it. Same principle as an extra battery, same hassle.

another review: USA Today
- Apple's iPhone isn't perfect, but it's worthy of the hype
- The revelation is that it's also comfortable to hold and touch.
- I expected to miss the tactile feel that a physical keyboard provides. I didn't.
- You can hold a conference call with up to five people.
- No voice recognition or voice dialing
- halfway decent internal speakers for listening if you set the thing down
- iPod games are not compatible with iPhone
- our company tech department raised questions about the security settings Apple required with our Microsoft Exchange servers.
- Battery life didn't prove to be a big problem in my unscientific tests

I don't mean to have a dig but I believe people defend apple to the death sometimes. I love the iPhone too but it should have 3G. My Sony Ericsson K800 lasts ages on the battery and its 3G. It's also a lot cheaper than the iPhone. My point is that for the iPhone to be loved by Europe/UK, we need 3G! (And MMS :p)

Europe is a whole separate ball game compared to the US. Until Apple specifically launches in Europe without 3G, I'd just keep patiently waiting. If they launch without 3G, THEN give them hell.

I totally agree. I'm pretty sure the iPhone has better battery life than the iPod and you don't really see people complaining about the lack of a removable battery with the iPod. Seems like, as you said, a non-issue.

Hmm, are we sure 3G isn't included in the FCC filing. I mean there are still parts of it that are secret.

It starts to play for me then stops. Has already killed Safari once. So I will wait till later, maybe there is a mirror somewhere.
