The David Pogue Video Is Awesome Infotainment

When you subscribe to his Video Podcast, you get an automatic download of his new iPhone review video which is not only highly informative but also very entertaining and just plain fun. Also make sure you look at his slide show which is also very informative. :) Thanks David. You Rock!

I totally agree. I'm pretty sure the iPhone has better battery life than the iPod and you don't really see people complaining about the lack of a removable battery with the iPod. Seems like, as you said, a non-issue.
its different, ppl don't need need to worry about receiving a call when iPod is out of battery.

Thanks Multimedia! I remember you said you were waiting for the new iPod Video to come out and still had a year left with Verizon. Are you any more tempted after all of today's good news?

How many people really walk around with extra batteries in their pocket? I think this is a niche need, mostly business travellers.

Anyway, while you can't pop in an extra batter you CAN use a dock-connector battery pack (several alrady available for iPods) so you can have extra juice (either rechargable or AA) for those occasions. Problem solved.

Personally, I think the battery thing is a non-issue. iPhone has great battery life and you can use battery packs when that won't cut it. Same principle as an extra battery, same hassle.
Speaking of Dock connector will the iPhone work with my iPod adapter for my Pioneer radio? I seem to recall one of the reviews saying it may not work with them. If that is true, then I can't get rid of my iPod cause that is my main source of driving to work music. Is anyone here into car audio or lives in the Northern VA area, I'd like to stop by and see if it is compatible if possible.

The battery appears to be phenomenal. Almost a day of audio we are talking about. I really dont think the secondary battery thing is going to be an issue for 99% of people.

so... why is apple with att again? crappy customer service, less than stellar nationwide coverage...

Above is a screenshot of the ATT coverage image found at http://wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/. Now, while Seattle doesn't get the greatest coverage by ATT, saying that overall nationwide coverage is bad is wrong.

In my experience customer service with them has actually BEEN stellar. I lost my phone, I bought another of the same phone, and I took it into a local ATT store, they activated the new SIM card with my existing number, and BAM worked fine and without a hitch.

From what I read (somewhere) no: it will charge via the connection (if that was possible with the iPod) but won't play, but Apple is going to try a software update to make the majority of such products work.

The silver lining is that everybody with iPod car kits/chargers automatically have iPhone car chargers. Nice.

I used to use ATT during the 90"s until about 6 years ago ,and their customer service was so bad I thought the company was collapsing (in spite of it's size).

I actually felt sorry for them (as an original American institution)

Maybe they got better

Very nice reviews. I've finished watching the videos from within the reviews, as well, and they are very good.

I can't wait for this thing! :D

of note:

- 700 megabytes is occupied by the phone’s software

And it should be noted that the blank spots on the west half of the US are two mountain ranges running north - south. The Cascades and the Rockies. Neither are very kind to cell towers, trust me on this one

New York Times needs to fix their video player. It's abysmal. It doesn't seem to properly buffer the video (like YouTube, which can load the entire remainder of the video and you can skip around without having to restart the stream). Also, it freezes up periodically on my cable connection.

the iphone reviews sound great but they talk about it like its a computer its just a phone with computer like features

No voice dial?!?!?

I can't buy it

I want it and the only feature in a phone I absolutely need is not included.

I know, I had the same problem with the Times video player, and I had to refresh the page several times and go back to the spot that I had left off at - it's rather annoying.

Flash + server overload from iPhone fanboys and haters = bad viewer experience

Go for the video podcast. Better quality, no buffering. http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=210818527

Yeah, a phone running OS X just happens to have a few computer-like features (web, email, SMS, YouTube, Google Maps, calendar, music, movies, CoverFlow).

Or if the software on the wireless chip can be upgraded by flashing it.

One thing Apple did recently is announce that it would upgrade both the iPhone and AppleTV over time, and at that time, pundits speculated this was to overcome the $2 fee fiasco that Apple went through to upgrade/activate the 802.11n capabilities already built into some WiFi chips.

Now, if it is possible, Apple could upgrade/activate hardware on your iPhone (i.e., converting EDGE to 3G) without running into trouble with the "generally accepted accounting principles".

yes, i'm following your line of reasoning. it's entirely possible that a UMTS/HSDPA (3G) radio could very well be in the iphone. and it's my understanding that these 3G radios can fall back on EDGE if there is no 3G signal. so if this is true, then 3G capabilities could very well be disabled with EDGE turned on by default. but we won't know until someone's brave enough to dissect it and identify the iphone's major components.

Absolutely not. That would be super presumptuous of anyone to do provided the strict FCC requirements. To attempt to slide something by them would be a huge mistake.

If the device is capable of use on a specific band, that has to be disclosed to the FCC or else you will have a product that is in violation of FCC requirements.

but the FCC may already know that it's a 3G device, it's just that we won't find out from them because apple requested that those documents be embargoed from the public.

and as the poster above said, apple was selling previous generation macbook pros as 802.11g laptops when in fact they were draft-N.

Funny, I just got an email from the corporate email for my work. They emailed saying that the company will NOT support the iphone (and this company has 70,000+ workers) because it lacks the security features necessary for email and other functions. If a lot of big companies are the same way, this can't be good for business users.

It does sound more like a phone w/ computer functions than a computer w/ a phone.
