Funny how this "Onion" review posted a month ago got a lot of facts right, like:

- no songs as ringtones
- iTunes
- no Java
- battery life
- sound quality
- ...

:)

From what I read (somewhere) no: it will charge via the connection (if that was possible with the iPod) but won't play, but Apple is going to try a software update to make the majority of such products work.

The silver lining is that everybody with iPod car kits/chargers automatically have iPhone car chargers. Nice.

Crap. See now I have to explain to my wife (whom kinda wants one after watching Apples guide) that she has to carry both her iPod and iPhone cause her pioneer radio adapter doesn't work with it. But yeah the charging thing is good. I hope they fix that quick (well that or I get to buy two new radio's hehe not that that is a bad thing).

All the current reviews say basically the same thing; it's an excellent, innovative product, but it isn't without flaws. That was to be expected, and I'm more confident than ever that it will live up to the hype--as Walt said, it's not hype anymore, because it delivers in all of the areas Apple claimed it would.

The hype for the iPhone is crazy  :apple: I have not really been on macrumors all that much lately and I was surprised by the coverage on macrumors today and the front page of cnet: 7 separate stories on the iphone!

Nice phone. Too bad that AT&T is a joke in any place in the US other then urban areas. Actually any GSM phone is a joke in any place but urban areas in the US. Case in point is that I am working on the SW border of the US and Mexico right now and I can call with my CDMA phone in the middle of the New Mexico desert. Good luck doing that on a GSM phone.

Why buy a $600 phone when it isn't gonna work worth a crap if you want to take a trip across the US. I don't even want to hear the bs about why GSM is SO much better then CDMA. The facts are in the United States the CDMA network is FAR superior. I know the rest of the world other then certain areas in Asia are GSM and I can understand why Apple started with a GSM phone, but if they really want to put this iPhone in everyone's hand, then they better be working on a CDMA phone because not everyone lives in a metro area.

This is not arguing technology. I don't care which one is better, I am just saying that there is a much better CDMA network in the US. iPhone being GSM only leaves out millions of customers.

I'm actually quite impressed and happy. It seems Apple has another hit on their hands. I'm not getting it because I've done the smartphone thing (even though this seems more like a handheld mac than a smartphone) before and I'm not looking to get another one but I am glad to see that Apple's fans aren't going to be disappointed by the device.

And for those who asked why Apple is with AT&T, well they were probably the only company who would agree with what Apple wanted for giving them the exclusive use of the iPhone. And AT&T is figuring the device will lead to hundreds of new subscribers, which considering cellphone subscribers are almost at a plateau, one device bring a wealth of subscribers from other companies is unheralded.

For those complaining about 3G and the network etc., the question is, which is more important, the phone or the call?

Should have included HSDPA!

Apple should have included HSDPA! Even if disabled initially and unlockable in a firmware update -- would have been great, no 3G makes the iPhone bite hard...

Would also have been nice to see a replaceable/upgradeable battery & memory card slot!

The iPhone is supposed to be a phone...

The lack of voice dialing is pretty disappointing. What does Stevie do when he is driving and needs to make a call?

Something related that none of the reviewers have touched on and really concerns me is whether it is realistically possible to use the iPhone one handed? How many times have you needed to use your phone with one hand because you are driving, carrying an over-priced coffee beverage, etc?

iPhone IPSec/VPN?

So can the iPhone do IPSec/VPN? This would sure make the WiFi more useful...

Many companies are now doing wireless guest access where you can only fully get online by IPSec to a Gateway back at your company...

3G is the linchpin it seems... on TWIT they said it was a software-upgradeable feature... so we'll see won't wee...

2 mins to load Yahoo! is unacceptable at this time, the WAP version isn't even that slow on my razr

No A2DP

No stereo bluetooth headset capability... that's tacky, especially for a phone that is an iPod and media device or whatever.

Well, I just finished reading all four reviews. That is a pretty kick-ass debut for the iPhone, all in all.

It sounds like the only real issue is EDGE. And I wish it had more Flash memory. I guess I could wait for iPhone 2.0 with more memory and 3G support, but I think I'll be taking the plunge anyway.

Now... the question is, when will I be able to get my hands on one? There's no way I'm waiting in line... I wonder if ordering through the web would be the best idea...

What are the odds the new plans include (or have a discounted add-on) for AT&T WiFi hotspots on the iPhone? 50% of the time I want more than EDGE is at an airport where AT&T has a presence, and I'd think given the chance, they'd rather push packets over wifi than have a couple hundred of these things fighting for EDGE bandwidth.

Also, anyone seen specs on what WiFi security protocols this thing can handle? It better be able to do WEP and WPA.

Pogue missing manual

Did anyone catch on the Pogue video review that one of his emails was entitled "re: iphone: the missing manual" I guess it is to be expected that he would put one out but just thought I would get it out there.

Brian

edit: just checked amazon and it is already on there. should have checked there first i guess.

ok... i'm from Canada, but even i know that USA TODAY is a sh*t rag of a paper... don't know what it was included, or why anyone would care what they say about anything...

No 3G

Don't convince yourself that there is even a small chance they will upgrade the first gen phone to 3G. Either accept living with EDGE/wi-fi or don't buy.

I'll just be happy to have a 'signal' from att where I live in suburban DC...

that would actually drain the battery, even when not activated. One of the big downfalls of 3G. :(

That not what I have been reading. From the users who actually turn of their 3G(on compatible phones) it actually saved battery life, however the downfall was call quality went down a notch.

In 802.11n case, the draft was not approved and Apple did not have a 11n base station for sale. It kind of made sense that they did not advertise 11n capability early on when they could not really to provide the full functionality. Why deal with all those support calls if it won't really help you or the customer? However, WCDMA (3G) is not like that. It's been approved and well known a long time. It would not make any sense for Apple to pay for the hardware, but not to advertise it as such. I would not hold out any hope for a $2 firmware upgrade.

so... why is apple with att again? crappy customer service, less than stellar nationwide coverage...

well verizon apparently said no to apple, but they are CDMA so it wouldn't work worldwide. verizon also forces their own OS on most phones and cripples bluetooth connectivity.

so with verizon out of the picture, who else? sprint/nextel? certainly not t-mobile, as they aren't nationwide at all.

so many of you complain about it being with at&t/cingular, but they really didn't have a choice. they are the largest cell phone provider in the US.

The lack of voice dialing is pretty disappointing. What does Stevie do when he is driving and needs to make a call?

I agree 100%, however this is the kind of functionality Apple can include in a firmware upgrade, so all hope is not lost.

However, if you'r emaking a purchasing decision now, you have to base it off of what the iPhone is today, now what Apple MIGHT include in a software upgrade.
