Completely unrelated to the reviews but I just really noticed this ... when was the last time Apple's front page was completely taken up by one product???

Craziness I tell ya ... still getting one though :p (after a month or two of working the bugs out, etc.)

They're also advertising the 5th Avenue store - The more recognition it has, the more people go there, and so the more people end up buying macs.

They're also advertising the features of the next iPod, getting people used to it...

So can the iPhone do IPSec/VPN?

Certainly, that is the rumor that is floating around (link). But more importantly, IPSec/VPN is just software, the iPhone runs OS X, and the iPhone will probably get regular software updates.

If the iPhone doesn't have IPSec/VPN at ship time, expect a software update soon that will have it.

So do you use your mobile minutes when you go on the internet, YouTube, or when your phone is checking e-mail?

if you didn't have unlimited, you would be using your internet allowance for all of the above. Any time you connect - browser, email, messenger via EDGE / GPRS et al, you'd be cutting into your internet usage.

So you use x # of minutes just for the talking, you can surf the Internet (YouTube) as much as you want????????????

Yes, you can. I don't see why you're trying to correlate using minutes mixed with browsing YouTube or surfing the web when that's considered data, and as I stated, it's unlimited for email and web. You should view the official plans available for iPhone, along with more information on what exactly you get here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/rateplans.html :)

Actually...

"But you can't do that with the iPhone, because it can't send picture messages. (It sends photos only by e-mail, which most phones can't get.)"

and

"AT&T’s EDGE cellular network: "excruciatingly slow""

These are 2 really disappointing aspects of the iPhone.

First off this has been address quite a few times on AI - if you've got an iPhone and want to send a picture to someone who doesn't have e-mail on their phone all you have to do is to send it to theirnumber@mms.att.net

As for the second part - apparently NYC's EDGE network blows because as many have attested to in this forum their results are significantly better than pogues.

I really do wish he'd mention the VERY VERY easy work around for the mms messages...

Thanks, for some reason I think that Verizon was charging my minutes when I was surfing the Net

Really - are you serious???

Obviously, you missed the point. A data plan is REQUIRED!!!!! I would rather just rely on WiFi when it is available for surfing the web. The AT&T network is too slow and I can live without visual voicemail if it is going to cost me $20.00 a month.

AT&T stinks and the blow-back on this is going to be tremendous - give it a month or two.

You have got to be kidding me! You're b!tching about a $20 a month unlimited data plan?!?! No other cell company will even think about giving you unlimited for $20 - more like $40+. $20 get's you a piss ass amount that you'd burn through in a week.

But honestly - WTF would you buy an iPhone if you're such a penny pincher you wouldn't even use the thing to at least occasionally surf the web?!?! You've got some issues there amigo. And no, there is not going to be any remote amount of blow-back from that. What are people going to say - "damn you AT&T - you gave me unlimited internet for the price of a weeks worth of internet, I hate you!!" Riiiggghhhhtttt...

LOL. The iPhone won't be as large, in relative terms, as Star Wars.

When I saw Star Wars in 1977, it was a transformational experience for me, as I think it was for a lot of people. The iPhone may be great, but I doubt 30 years from now (the year 2037), people will still be talking about the original iPhone like people still talk about the original Star Wars.

And d@mn it, Han shot first !!

Where is that stated? I JUST spoke with ATT from my mobile and they said that is FALSE, plus a few other members on here stated the same case. Specifically, that a data plan is NOT required, that a ATT customer CAN get just a voice plan. The video is misleading, and unless they changed it, simply demonstrates the data plans available. Unless things have changed, or there is miscommunication among ATT reps, it is possible to get just a VOICE PLAN. So stop jumping down my throat, biatches lol. :p

Why would you be opposed to getting a 50% discount on unlimited internet on a device that's hands down the best handheld internet experience in the world. I mean, come on. Are you never going to use the google maps, e-mail, you tube, movie times, etc? That's the great thing about having a convergence device is that you CAN do that. I'm just exstatic I don't have to pay $20 and watch my usage or pay $40 and feel like I'm paying way too much...

I do still have to figure out how early I need to line up - anybody in Fort Worth??

It's stated here, and I don't know anywhere where it states you can get a voice plan only for it: http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/rateplans.html

Hey hey hey, I'M not opposed, I was just correcting someone's statement that ATT is only allowing data plans with the iPhone, when in fact you don't need to get just a data plan. My post before my last one I also stated why would you just get a voice plan for a phone that requires data service. Sheesh, people get so riled up online.

It's clear this phone will be big...and everything shoudln't be perfect, especially on a rev A product from a company that's never done phones. but the lack of 3 G is a little disappointing.

Um, where in that page does it state "Data plans only"? It is just SHOWING the new exclusive data plans for the iPhone that are not offered for any other ATT approved device, it's NOT showing the other plans that ATT already offers. I think people are misreading what Apple/ATT is attempting to show.

Seriously, read it:

All iPhone service plans include Visual Voicemail and unlimited data — Internet and email — so you only have to decide how many minutes and SMS text messages you need. You’ll select your plan when you activate your iPhone using iTunes on your computer.

Learn more about activation

Existing AT&T Customers
If you’re already an AT&T customer and want to keep your current voice plan, you can just add an iPhone Data Plan with unlimited data (email and web) and Visual Voicemail for just $20 per month.

Check AT&T coverage in your area.
AT&T is the exclusive carrier for iPhone in the United States — which means you’ll gain access to the country’s largest digital voice and data network.

*More SMS text messages can be added to any plan.

Minimum new 2-year wireless service plan and activation fee required to activate iPhone features, including iPod; plans are subject to AT&T credit approval.

No where in there does it state you MUST have a data plan, it states you CAN add or get these plans. ATT has stated that you can just use a voice plan, adding/getting data plans are NOT mandatory. Please, call ATT, they will clarify.

Actually, can you imagine the blow back when people who don't currently have a data plan start using all the Internet features on the iPhone and run up huge bills? I wouldn't be surprised if a good majority of the people who end up with an iPhone aren't current smartphone users who are used to having data plans. They'll be normal folks who probably never had a data plan. Having it all tied in to one plan avoids all that customer support pain down the road.
