I feel this way even since about 2 years ago. So far the best customer service i have seen is t-mobile. they really go out of their way to help.

I used to use ATT during the 90"s until about 6 years ago ,and their customer service was so bad I thought the company was collapsing (in spite of it's size).

I actually felt sorry for them (as an original American institution)

Maybe they got better

well verizon apparently said no to apple, but they are CDMA so it wouldn't work worldwide. verizon also forces their own OS on most phones and cripples bluetooth connectivity.

so with verizon out of the picture, who else? sprint/nextel? certainly not t-mobile, as they aren't nationwide at all.

so many of you complain about it being with at&t/cingular, but they really didn't have a choice. they are the largest cell phone provider in the US.

If Apple could have gotten a similar deal with Verizon, they should have just forged ahead and made a CDMA version of the iPhone. The network seems to be the running theme of discontent in the reviews, and that is Verizon's strong point.

The lack of voice dialing is pretty disappointing. What does Stevie do when he is driving and needs to make a call?

Something related that none of the reviewers have touched on and really concerns me is whether it is realistically possible to use the iPhone one handed? How many times have you needed to use your phone with one hand because you are driving, carrying an over-priced coffee beverage, etc?

it's very dangerous to be driving with one hand and using your phone with the other hand. it's illegal where i live.

through all of this I still dont understand.

What is apple really gaining from this deal with AT&T? I still cannot figure it out. The only rumblings ive heard of is they get some percentage of services? it doesnt make sense? seems far to tacky, and what would apple have to lose by just releasing a phone ala nokia?
I think that is the main sticking point. even with the slower edge, people would be just buying this like their ipod. why couldnt everyone have it?
I see nothing to be gained with ATT expect for maybe some future deal for a future product where they need something to be free to customers.

Well I got lucky and had one VZW phone that had real bluetooth and its own GUI. The only phones they dont really cripple are the Smart-phones. It's odd that a company like VZW said no.

Cynical AT&T data plan requirement

Having AT&T shove a mandatory data plan down our throats just goes to show what they really think of their customers.

If they had any confidence that their data service was of value, they would let the customer decide. They are just pimping the iPhone.

I hope their stock shareholders rot in bankruptcy.

What a sleeze-ball move on their part. They act as though they are the manor-lords and we are their serfs.

I am going back to Verizon.

He turns the phone off and watches the fff-ing road ahead... else he could kill himself and a lot of innocents...

In California it is called a DUI... driving under the iPhone

so... why is apple with att again? crappy customer service, less than stellar nationwide coverage...

Apparently most wireless carriers turned Apple down. Sort of like all those movie studios that turned down Star Wars.

LOL. The iPhone won't be as large, in relative terms, as Star Wars.

Maybe some carriers don't want to bend over backwards for Apple?

Apple is receiving some kick backs from AT&T but Apple will not disclose this information by any means. If you go listen to the audio cast of the shareholders meeting, they call in and ask many many questions about how Apple is doing and blah blah blah. All Apple would state is that they will receive payments from AT&T and would count that as Revenue (if I remember correctly) but would not disclose how those Revenues are obtained. They are pretty tight lipped company so who knows how they are getting money for this.

For worldwide deployment it is good that Apple went with GSM, since that is their goal. But I think it is sad they are on a lesser technology. In on of the reviews or something it said two minutes or something for yahoo homepage to load. Sad....really sad. I know that is due to the network's limited capabilities, but that is sad. My Q on Sprint loads that in like 15 seconds. Sad to see a phone on a poor network. Great technology on a poor delivery medium. CDMA 4 Life. hahah, ok lame.

Hundreds? No one cares about hundreds. We are talking millions here!

Millions? Is it really that much? I thought maybe thousands but erred on the side of caution with hundreds. I don't think it's millions.

It's illegal in many states to use a cell phone while driving.
And that's the way it should be.

Agreed.

Apparently most wireless carriers turned Apple down. Sort of like all those movie studios that turned down Star Wars.

Or the company that turned down the Beatles.

LOL. The iPhone won't be as large, in relative terms, as Star Wars.

Or the Beatles.

On a separate note, you can't use the iPhone until you activate it with iTunes at home right? So we all know about the craziness that will be happening to get one but what about the craziness afterwards, as new owners race home to use their phone? Thank god they're doing it in the evening.

OK, in case you missed the point that has been discussed here dozens of times, ANY PLAN WILL WORK ON THE PHONE. Data plans are SUGGESTED, however ATT specifically states voice plans are also allowed (although why bother getting a smart phone without a data plan? doesn't make sense). So no, ATT is not forcing data plans, the news was merely that ATT is offering very cheap/reasonable data plans with the iPhone.

Conspiracy theory: I wonder how many of these people claiming "no 3G is a show stopper" are people working for other wireless carriers?

Why do you need a data plan for a smartphone? The iPhone is different because it relies so heavy on the internet... which isn't the case for every other smartphone out there. You can install 3rd party software on them... some of them require an internet connection, but probably not as heavily as iPhone.

My point: You can get more out of all other smartphones without connecting to the internet than you can with iPhone.

not quite

Obviously, you missed the point. A data plan is REQUIRED!!!!! I would rather just rely on WiFi when it is available for surfing the web. The AT&T network is too slow and I can live without visual voicemail if it is going to cost me $20.00 a month.

AT&T stinks and the blow-back on this is going to be tremendous - give it a month or two.

I loved Pogue's video review. Very well done! :) The ending did point out one of the iPhone's biggest flaws, which is the built-in battery, but it shall still change the way we use phones. I cannot wait until Friday! I'll be video documenting my day. :D

Funny, I just got an email from the corporate email for my work. They emailed saying that the company will NOT support the iphone (and this company has 70,000+ workers) because it lacks the security features necessary for email and other functions. If a lot of big companies are the same way, this can't be good for business users.

It does sound more like a phone w/ computer functions than a computer w/ a phone.

@chewietobbacca
I hope you don't mind me asking but what is the name of your business? If you don't feel like answering that question I understand. If you don't want to answer the question can you are least state the nature of business that the company is in?

Thanks!

Hmm. You may have missed the signup video posted on Apple's website. When you get the iPhone, you activate it at your house and you pick designated iPhone plans. They all include unlimited data, but you can't separate it from the voice plan.

If Apple wants to get serious they really need to offer 2 versions of this phone. The fact is that the GSM network is very weak in many regions of the United States. I am not saying that the US is the world, but I don't think people understand how much superior the CDMA network is in the United States.

The bad thing is with AT&T's 5 year exclusive contract millions of people will be left out. Apple will never sell a phone to me unless it works well all over the country, because unlike a lot of people I don't stay in highly populated places all the time.

A great phone on a crappy network=crap to me.

the company will NOT support the iphone (and this company has 70,000+ workers) because it lacks the security features necessary for email and other functions.

The iPhone supports Discretionary Access Control (DAC), Mandatory Access Control (MAC), and sandboxing. It will no doubt support SSL and most likely VPN. Your iPhone will probably be far more secure than the vast majority of PCs and Macs that connect to your company's network today.

If your IT department said, "We won't commit to it until it has come out and we have had a full chance to evaluate it," I would say, "Good for them". Even if they choose not to support it, they will have done it on an informed basis with actual facts.

But for any IT department to give such a blanket statement without waiting to see what the product will actually have just demonstrates their @ssholeness.

Completely unrelated to the reviews but I just really noticed this ... when was the last time Apple's front page was completely taken up by one product???

Craziness I tell ya ... still getting one though :p (after a month or two of working the bugs out, etc.)
