This thread did in fact remind me that it's stupidly easy to get content up on the TV, which will be super useful in the year ahead.

I've got a Sony TV that is NOT a Smart TV, and is NOT connected to WiFi at all.

Selected Miracast on my LG G4 and Screen Mirroring on the Sony TV, and it all worked flawlessly via WiFi Direct. (This was mirroring, though - not pinging content a la AirPlay, I presume).

In other news, I'm getting interested in the Moto X Style. Just waiting on the camera reviews, otherwise it could be a real option.

I don't know if they've only got two of each model or something but stock of X Play on UK site already running out - no black or 32gb left. The G had stock issues too. Hope it is a sign of good sales rather than low stock.

Been playing with moto maker. The 16gb play is still almost "impulse buy" territory.

The best thing about the Play is clearly the battery, especially with the 1080 screen. It's very similar to the iPhone 6 Plus in terms of many specs.

Can def see it selling healthily for people who need good battery life, and QHD screens suck so much power.

I thought we were talking about Chromecast mirroring? It's good to know it doesn't support miracast but this is semantics argument now.

Exactly and the moto x does not have that ability which these days is a major fail. They didn't even include mhl or any cable support its chromecast or nothing. It's unfortunate because I do like the pure feel moto.

I'm really not bothered by QHD either - the benefit of QHD over 1080 to me doesn't outweigh the huge battery. My Nexus 6 is great but it's only lunch time and I'm already down to 40% with just some wifi web browsing. Also, the QHD screen on the nexus isn't as good quality as on the iPhone 6.

Which led me to being interested in the Play first off when I pondered which of the new Motos would better suit me. But since it is not coming to the U.S., I will check out the Pure. Why not for $399.

Yep, tbh I wish my G4 had a 1080 screen. Exactly the same, use Maps on it and the battery just goes by lunchtime.

Something must be wrong with your battery or Nexus. I have an N6 and feel my battery is worse than others but just some wifi browsing there is no way I would be down to 40 by lunch

The Play seems next to ideal...until I get to the camera. While also using a 21 MP f/2.0 aperture sensor, it looks a bit gimped compared to the Pure/Style--biggest deficiency for me is no 1080p/60fps video (or any 4K). No 802.11ac is a bit of a bummer as well.

Otherwise, it seems really damn nice--love the huge battery paired with only 1080p display (;)) and the water resistance. And only $299...:D

So close to the perfect device for me...

My sentiments exactly. 615 is enough and 2GB on close-to-stock is fine. Gimped camera is not :(

I wouldn't be surprised if some canny folks at XDA manage to 'unlock' 4k recording via a hack. But yes it should support it without hacks

I don't really care so much about 4K as it will likely be less than stellar but 1080p60fps is a must.

Unless the camera is not a much needed feature. Enter the Alcatel Idol 3, a great device on the cheap with those specs and not focused on the camera.

And more importantly it is unlocked.

youll be lucky to get any updates on the idol3 though

Definitely a big consideration but by no stretch anything more than a toy device for me. If it stays running this well for the money spent, I would not care about updates.

fair enough though, with that perspective it is indeed a great buy. Did you ever try the zenphone? I hear the idol is the one to get

Love the look of the Moto phones. They just can't seem to get the camera right. I thought the 2 slits on the front were for the speakers? The reviews dings them for mono sound?

Final verdict
The Moto X Play is a solid, affordable choice for anyone who wants ;above average battery life and camera performance for a mid-range price. The phone itself is mid-range in terms of specs, but Motorola had to make some compromises to keep the price low. Unfortunately neither the camera nor the battery performed quite as well as Motorola said they would, but they are both still above average for the price.

If you currently have a Moto X (2014), the Moto X Play probably won't entice you as much as the Moto X Style will, but the Moto X Play will definitely appeal to a large segment of the smartphone audience.

There is increasingly stiff competition in this price range, however, from the likes of the Asus Zenfone 2 and Huawei P8. The first offers fantastic value for money and the second more high-end specs (but a much smaller battery). The Moto X Play is a good phone, but the mono speaker is disappointing and despite increased resolution in the camera, it still doesn't produce the high-end results we expected.

On the play edition I think one is just an earpiece whereas on the forthcoming Style - they will be stereo.

Camera results in that review were a bit all over the place, one minute praising it and saying above decent lowlight and normal light shots but some iffy software stabilisation - but then gave the overall score marked it down for its camera ?

Will have to see what other reviews say, but I'm not interested in the Play tbh myself - I'm more interested in the Style, clove told me they expect stock around 23rd September - so likely still a month before we see reviews of it.

No because the Idol 3 was a cheaper buy for me and I was only going to use either as a toy device so I took the cheaper route.

The Zenfone 2e runs pretty good at my local AT&T store. I can see why folks like the bigger brother.

Should have been:

8GB 4.5" Moto E @ $119
16 GB 5.0" Moto G @ $179
32GB 5.2" Moto S (Play) @ $299
32GB 5.2" Moto X (Style) @ $399

I've never had a Motorola phone but from afar I've always admired their E, G, X designs and the way they handle their business.

Still not sure why they aren't releasing the play in USA. Maybe because the Style will be $399 which is very competitive there, whereas the Play is priced at €379 here which equates to $425

The Style by comparison will be €499 ($550 compared to your $399) here.
