So the way to make the iPad a laptop replacement is to ... turn it into one of those 2-in-1 laptops just running iOS?

It would be arguably better in some ways. I have a surface pro 4 which is great as a laptop - not so great as a tablet. Windows just isn't set up properly to be entirely touch driven. iOS is.

Please no. I am continually baffled by people who want to buy a tablet product with an OS clearly intended to shift the entire paradigm of how you interact with a computer, and turn it into a laptop. What is the point? If Excel is something you really need and critical to your computing, maybe you should just buy a laptop? Even the keyboard cases are too much IMO, but I understand I'm well in the minority on that topic.

Just got my Citrix mouse. All I can say is WOW! Not sure why anyone would be against a mouse. This thing is brilliant when used with the iPad (although limited to controlling VMs.). SO much easier to use than having to touch the screen.

Bring on mouse support Apple!

Darn, I am clear across the other side of the country and should have prioritized shipping. Oh well, while the wait is long the anticipation will just get that much better as it gets closer and closer to me.

No it's not. The Tablet world is dying and companies are trying to re-invent them to be more productive devices so sticking to the old "touch only" approach will only continue the trend of consumption only devices and the trend of slumping sales.
Look at Google, They are actually asking developers to add Mouse and keyboard support for android apps because of their integration of touch based Android apps into Chromebooks which have a keyboard, a trackpad and a touchscreen.

The world is moving in the direction of multi purpose devices that can be more productive than touch only based devices.

The tablet world is dying? Please show me some numbers of that. The iPad is the second highest selling Apple product each year behind the iPhone, but yeah the tablet world is dying.

I know, that was FAST! I ordered it from a reseller in Ottawa (Citrix store doesn't ship to Canada). I had it delivered to my office in Toronto. It was just about 24 hours from order to on my desk. Quite impressive.

A short Google search could have clearly showed you the massive decline of iPad sales in 2016 which continued to 2017....
I'm not going or even bother with a link if you a small search would show you so many results.
Apple IS trying to re-invent the tablet because they know they can't keep selling it as a mainly consumption device. For it to be a productive device, it needs mouse support in addition to touch support. Clearly, you disagree and that's OK! We all have different needs.

Naysayers can say what they like. I'm using my just delivered Citrix mouse with the my new 12.9 iPad Pro right now and I have a big smile on my face. This was the missing piece of the puzzle for me. I can only use it to control VMs at work which is cool, but this is absolutely a great way to interface with the iPad and I can see many other apps that would benefit from it.

How or why anyone is against this combo is beyond me.

LOL Congrats! It feels so natural doesn't it. Be warned though... when bouncing between Jump and iOS apps, you'll be tempted to reach for the mouse.

I'm lovin' it! I can now work "normally" with any of the VMs at work. I've already tried to use the mouse when outside of Jump a few times. LOL. That's why I really would like to see full mouse support. It's great!

I never said sales were not declining. I know they are, but most expects say this is due to consumers keeping their devices (iPads in this case) longer. They are treating this like a computer, not a mobile device that needs to be upgraded each year. I believe this says even more about the iPad then anything. They are getting so good that they don't need to be upgraded each year.

You and many others have completely missed my point. I did not say mouse support would not add function, or that it would not make some users very happy. My point is that not enough iPad users require this for their work flow on the iPad for Apple to add support. I am not a using that requires mouse support, so this does not become an issue for me, but for things that I do on my iPad that could possible be used with a mouse. It does not seem like a large loss that I don't have a mouse. Your statement about the iPad having to have mouse support to be productive sounds very absolute, which I do not feel is the case at all. There are plenty (the majority) of pro users that don't require a mouse for the iPad to be a productive device for them. Take photo editing. They don't need mouse support for them get work done. I work in the retail field in management, and I don't need to mouse support to be productive. I need to have email and Safari both open, and to be able to work with them together. Not having a mouse does not stop me at all, and I am just as productive as I would be on my work computer. I pull out my Mac if I need to work on any excel spreadsheet because the screen is just to small on an iPad or my surface pro. Your usage may be different, and it sounds like it is, but that does not mean the iPad Pro is not productive without a mouse. It may not work for you, but at some point your workflow might just be updated to support touch as it's main input.

Now I am tempted to get the Citrix Mouse too, heck apparently Singapore has a Citrix store that I didn't know of!

[YEARNING FOR NEW IPAD PRO INTENSIFIES]

If you need to work on VMs, the Citrix mouse is great when used with Jump Desktop. Great combo!

I can say that I REALLY REALLY enjoyed BTC Mouse support on iOS 9 jailbreak (I'm on iOS 10 JB now and it hasn't been updated) and really miss it terribly.

I really wish they'd enable the mouse natively, maybe just as an accessibility preference.

The iPad with BT mouse + KB really could be all I personally need from a laptop and I could go back to desktop + iPad...but until then, a single MBP is my best solution for now.

I'm not too clear, and the citrix site isnt that much clearer either....

What exactly can i expect to use the citric mouse with if i purchase it for my ipad? Im pressuming it isnt a general ipad mouse for any app?

Correct. It isn't a general mouse for the iPad and it won't do anything with almost all apps and the OS itself. However, it does talk to Jump Desktop and when using Jump to RDP or VNC to a machine, the mouse then becomes active and you can use it within the VM. If you have a Citrix backend, you can use the Citrix Receiver app which the mouse will talk to and in turn pass control on to the Citrix environment. At least that is my understanding. I'm using it with Jump to control VMs hosted in vSphere (VMWare).

Currently, the Citrix X1 Mouse is only usable on the iPad while using remote desktop applications... specifically Jump Desktop. What that means, is outside of Jump Desktop, the iPad won't recognize the mouse. In Jump, it recognizes the mouse and it can be used to navigate within the remote systems you connect to.

For me, I use Jump Desktop on my 12.9 Pro to remotely connect to my iMac in my home office. I use the X1 to navigate within Jump to control OSX on my iMac. When doing this, my iPad Pro it looks and feels like a notebook running OSX.

Without mouse support, the iPad can never replace my entire workflow as I remote into many machines for work. Last time I tried to use my fingers to remote into a PC it took me about 10x longer to do the same remedial tasks.

You should check out the Citrix mouse that is being discussed here. It's really great. I just got mine today and with Jump Desktop, I can control the VMs at work and it's just like using a PC to RDP to them. This means I'll only have to take my iPad and mouse on vacation with me and I can leave my laptop at home.

My iPad Pro has suddenly become a much more useful tool! And with all day battery life and LTE connectivity, I can use it anywhere! :)

I think mouse support IS coming. If I had a mouse, I could truly use my iPad for work. I could RDP to my PC at work and with a mouse and keyboard it would be like I'm there. Perfect. Mouse support is already possible via Citrix on the iPad.

I'm always baffled by those against it. It's literally a matter of turning on the ability to pair a mouse natively. Doesn't harm anyone or anything.

I don't get it either. It literally wouldn't affect those who don't want to use mice. Enabling mouse support doesn't mean you're required to use a mouse people.
