Upstate NY . Was FL.
Just picked this little one up a couple days ago to replace the s21U that I had. The “budget” s20 FE ain’t too shabby. Not much of a fan of narrow screens though.

Hey, I switched to the Google Pixel in May 2020. Wanted to give Android a shot since I thought it had improved (and it has). Android's nice, so is my Pixel. But you know what? I paid off the Pixel and got an iPhone 11 Pro Max in February 2021.

Why? Turns out I like iOS better.

It's funny though. You seem to be willing to do a few things for Android - but you don't mention anything about jailbreaking an iPhone. Some (or most) of the things you mention can be done on a jailbroken iPhone.

Why is that?

After all these years, no ecosystem is better, just different. Windows and Android are more open than Mac/iOS , so inherently more messy. Apple is more restrictive. Ya pays ya money...
I like messing with all this stuff. I'm retired and poor, so rely on hand-me-downs or eBay bargains. I recently built a nice Windows laptop out of eBay scrap, choose the model, look for the parts, bingo. Difficult to do that with a Macbook.
Mac Pro: wonderful box of tricks!
My daily drivers are Windows/Android and will probably remain so, unless I win a lottery... But I'd love to be able to use my iPhone 4S as a daily, such a lovely little device.
My only previous Apple experience was 3GS!
Basically, ya likes what ya likes. If it all works for you, great! If not, try something else.
Simples.

After being a huge fan of Apple since 2006 when I bought my first Apple product (a Macbook), I decided to switch. Moved from iPhone to Android and I sold my Macbook Pro and I'm learning how to use Linux (Fedora).

I'm not trying to incite hate. I'm just explaining the reasons I'm happy with the switch.

1 - Android is more private than iOS; I'm not talking about Google's Android. I'm using CalyxOS and it works great. Apple says what happens in your phone stays in your phone but we all know Tim Cook is full of crap.

2 - Android phones are cheaper; I'm not talking about crappy ones. You can get a Google Pixel 3 (in good condition) for less than $100. You'll only get an iPhone 7 for that price. Losing a lot of value is not good when you buy new but if you feel like switching to Android, $100 + 30min to install CalyxOS is easy.

3 - Android is way more configurable; You can sideload apps, have access to system files so you can copy files to and from the device, change the way the UI looks...

4 - Android is more private; I like how you can use a firewall to block apps from connecting to the internet...You dont need an iCloud account or Google's to use the phone, you have a kill-switch for the VPN (so it wont leak yourIP).

5 - Battery lasts a lot; I guess not having Google or Apple's tracking your phone in the background might help the device because the battery lasts more than a day using it. Of course, mileage might vary (GPS, ****ter all day...)

It takes time to find app replacements but you'll find if you have patience. I was able to find polished apps for my needs.

I might post another thread with Linux but so far my experience have been subpar because Mac laptops are way better than the competition (even in price).
As long as your happy is all that matters really. Of course you wouldn't get a great response to this post, it is what it is I suppose. It's crazy what's become of the devices we carry around. I saw a post on Reddit the other day where a kid was using tinder I believe when the girl says "Oh you have Android" to the guy. He is like yes, then she went on to say peace out basically due to him not having iMessage. This is just awful.

I switch across phones all the time honestly, and right now is the longest I went without using my iPhone. I have a Z Fold 3 and a S21 Ultra with the new Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The S21 just got Android 12 which I would say is much better than what the pixel is and is really nice. (I had the Pixel 6 as well, sold). I'm very happy where I'm at with this tech currently and don't see the need to switch to anything. I've got all my scenarios covered here.

We can all make our own justifications and that's good. I'm glad we have choices and I wish we'd get another major contender in the Mobile OS space. I wouldn't mind seeing windows mobile making a comeback, loved the tiles on the home screen, and I could also write apps for that OS pretty easily. (Old win mobile dev here).

If I said anything here lol, WE have ALL become snobs of sorts, losing track of what is actually important in life. I see it almost everyday and I'm just as guilty, but I'm more conscious than ever about it. Yes, these things we carry in our pockets are pretty important, but we can't lust over this crap, judge people by their choices ect.

Enjoy Life

I wish you all the very best. Going all in like that on secure custom ROM’s will get tiring though.

As for GNU/Linux. I’d recommend a Dell XPS developer edition. Or, a Think Pad that is well supported by the community.

I don’t get these post when people switch, seems like people who to switch are trying to validate their purchase or choices
Sometimes it’s nice just to think out loud or converse with someone about your thoughts. Doesn’t necessarily mean people want to engage with it or agree with it, but I’m sure I’ve posted lots of relatively pointless stuff on various online platforms. Perhaps it’s just loneliness? Lol or maybe I’m just projecting.

Yeah, it's nice and well worded but it's the same you'll see in any other "I made X choice" thread.

"Do what makes you happy" and "use what works best for you" are common sense but don't really contribute to the discussion. I dunno, I kinda have an internal eye roll every time I read something like that. Like yeah, it makes sense but that's not what we're here to discuss.

1 - Android is more private than iOS
2 - Android phones are cheaper
3 - Android is way more configurable
4 - Android is more private
5 - Battery lasts a lot

I disagree with 1 and 4 and I would venture to guess that most people also feel that iOS is more secure, but I suppose it’s debatable.

2 is true. If you want a cheaper phone, Android is probably the way to go. They don’t hold their value as well so you can get them cheaper but when you want to sell it, you won’t get much for it either.

3 is also true, but not important for a lot of people.

5 - the iPhone 13 Pro Max battery lasts crazy long. I’m sure there are android phones with big batteries too. I’m not sure what phone has the biggest battery but both android and Apple have phones with big batteries and phones with small batteries.

So, it boils down to cheaper and more customizable, and I’m glad you’ve found a solution that works better for you =)

So the recently released Pixel 5a is supported only until August 2024? Wow… And that’s OK in your eyes?

In three years time that expensive phone “Secure device” will become potentially insecure - and that’s what you base your rant on?

Meanwhile Apple currently support the iPhone 6s from SIX YEARS AGO with iOS 15.
Need to really expand device support and not just stick with pixels mostly. tsk tsk.

easy and open doesn't seem to follow this layout above.

No more replies please. I'm gonna hide in a corner.

No need to hide in a corner.

you've chosen Fedora Core (or some fork of it) as your desktop/laptop OS of choice.
you've chosen your smartphone brand and OS of choice.
you've announced not believing/supporting or want to be part of closed ecosystems.

you're choice is made, your point and opinions have been made intelligently and calmly striking a 3 page debate / commentary.

So ... I have to ask ... why is your macrumors account still active if you have no Apple devices nor need/want to continue for Apple? Not like you'll get the best help with Linux or with Android OS of your choice, so why the delay? I'm not trying to be insultive or an ass, just genuinely curious.

There are other forums on macrumors for people who have non-Apple stuff. We like it here. ?
