Xcode will connect wirelessly. That will give you actual stats.....but just swiping down will give you a good view of whether it's HD or 4K.

So has someone actually turned on playback HUD for 1080p movies that transferred to itunes from another service and see if it is actually streaming in 4K/HDR or not?
That's why I said wired or wireless. You can setup the device connection wirelessly with Xcode over wifi to get the playback hud to show up too.
About 30 movies from Vudu are now in our iTunes account, another 10 or so from Google Play (excluding any Disney/DMA titles that of course were already available).
I was _super_ stoked to see quite a few of the Vudu originating titles show up in iTunes marked as 4K, but from what I sounds like, that indicator is not correct[?]

This remains unclear. Netnothing is trying to check for us. I have a hard time believing that if ios/tvos is showing you have the 4K/HDR version that it won't stream that version. Apple has said that any HD title gets automatically upgraded. That has worked for movies that I purchased a 1080p blu ray with an itunes code. I don't see why it should be any different.

Awesome. Thanks and what I expected. HD titles transferred in stream at 4K/HDR/DV if available.
All the ones that were HD have lower natural size and bitrates. Most 4K streams from iTunes are closer to 25-30Mbps...these are all in the 15Mbps range.
I'd need someone to try one of these that they bought on iTunes or had a 4K code for to see the difference.
Yes now noticing the natural size differences. Hmm. It still looks like you are getting HDR/DV though. Strange.
Yeah even in the swipe down it will say HD HDR.
So I don't think these are streaming in 4K - but not sure if it's a bug and will be fixed.
No, natural size is showing the video being sent. Display resolution is my 4K TV. And bitrates for 4K are 25-30Mbps, not 15.

Correct, I was looking at natural size. Pacific rim 4k is showing the full 4k resolution. The others are showing a higher resolution in X than what would be just HD which is 1920x1080. So it's giving you something above HD in X. Apple is doing something custom here. And you're getting HDR on these as well. Honestly I care more about HDR than I do about 4k.

Your data also raises another question about what's happening with HDR streams. Your ATV is outputting HDR10 but some movies appear to have an incoming dolby vision stream. Is ATV trying to convert to HDR10 which I imagine would not be great, is there an HDR10 base layer like on discs that ATV is just extracting, or is it sending an HDR10 or even SDR stream (doesn't appear that way). I have a DV capable TV so not an issue for me but this question has been raised for the common scenario of TVs that support HDR10 but not DV.
Whatever custom they are doing.....it's not 4K. If anyone has any of these titles that came from 4K or have bought on iTunes and can run the same test I'd be curious to see what you get.
It's clear, anything Apple wants to send 4K is always in the 25-30Mbps. Anything HD is 15Mbps. Easy way to tell once I start streaming.
Has anyone proved that Vudu D2D movies that exist on Movies Anywhere transfer to other platforms ?

So are we sure it is a bug that is impacting Movies Anywhere movies from not playing at 4K even though they state 4K in iTunes? I know there has been a lot of bugs going around like once 4K movies now showing HD only like Skyfall.
Could very well be. People have complained about iTunes 4K streams even before MA. I think the way Apple has handled 4K has been bad. It was great to offer all these "free upgrades". But when you have movies not stream in 4K - or show 4K one day and HD the next....it makes me have less faith in the platform. For what's it's worth....Vudu has always been excellent with 4K. And they allow clear distinction on what you are getting and allow you to change.
