Could very well be. People have complained about iTunes 4K streams even before MA. I think the way Apple has handled 4K has been bad. It was great to offer all these "free upgrades". But when you have movies not stream in 4K - or show 4K one day and HD the next....it makes me have less faith in the platform. For what's it's worth....Vudu has always been excellent with 4K. And they allow clear distinction on what you are getting and allow you to change.

Yeah, VUDU needs to update their Apple TV app to support UHD.

Is this app only available on Apple TV? I can't find it on my iPad using the UK store

Also, does this mean that purchases from vudu will show on my iTunes movies list?

So are we sure it is a bug that is impacting Movies Anywhere movies from not playing at 4K even though they state 4K in iTunes? I know there has been a lot of bugs going around like once 4K movies now showing HD only like Skyfall.

I've been able to reproduce what the other poster says. 4K movies redeemed from VUDU cap out at 2228x928 (or thereabouts). Examples are both Lego Movies, Deadpool, Spider-Man 2. That's WB, Fox, and Sony studios. 4K movies I've purchased naturally on iTunes, like Arrival and John Wick, play in 3480x1600 no problem.

Definitely a difference, hopefully a glitch. I'm contacting Apple about it in just a minute

Someone on another forum said that Batman v Superman from VUDU played in 3480x1600 on the Apple TV.

I can't test that because I have that in 4K on Vudu.....so it will play in 4K on the ATV. That's the thing right now.....it's only HD titles that aren't playing in 4K.

That's exactly it. I don't have ANY 4K movies on VUDU, just HDX. So anything I'm testing is coming HDX from VUDU, but says 4K in iTunes. And I'm getting HDR, even at the reduced resolution, so clearly iTunes knows I have the higher quality version. It's just not playing it.

Super confusing on Apple's part to not include what you own like Vudu does. But that's Apple trying to be user friendly ;-)

But I thought iTunes doesn't distinguish between HD and 4K, it will just apply the 4K wholesale if the movie supports it. Why would it matter what format it came from VUDU on?

That's what we've been lead to believe. But even before this MA transition, please have complained that they aren't getting 4K on some streams even when it lists 4K.

Hopefully this gets fixed soon because it would be a big impact down the road if you use codes to redeem on the Movies Anywhere app for a movie that doesn't have an iTunes code it wouldn't play full 4K on the ATV.

Have we confirmed that the same Movie purchased in VUDU @ 4K and then played through iTunes vs purchased in iTunes @4K displays differently ?

That's what I would have thought too. Apple had been automatically giving us 4K/HDR if you purchased HD or had a disc code as they said they would. So either this is a bug or there was some behind the scenes policy issue with Apple, studios, and MA partners that aren't allowing 4K. I hope it's the former but I have a feeling it's the latter.

Yes it seems 4K Vudu movies will indeed stream at 4K on apple tv. It's HD Vudu movies that don't seem to be streaming at full 4k resolution but HDR is being used.

Interesting. So what about comparing the SAME VUDU HD Movie upgraded to 4K in iTunes vs HD Movie bought in iTunes upgraded to 4K ? Are they different. Is it possible that Apple is downgrading slightly HD->4K movies vs 4K movies purchased, across the board? Or possibly downgrading for certain movie studios ?!?

Thanks mate. And does Movies Anywhere allow Vudu purchases to transfer across to your iTunes account for you to keep?

Yes, if the movie is generally from Disney, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. You can check movies on Vudu to see if it has the MA logo.

Thanks again. One last question - will the films show on my mac, iphone and iPad?

So any title that is Movies Anywhere can port to Vudu, iTunes, Google, Amazon. You can link all.

When a title ports, it will show up in each retailer account.

There is also a Movies Anywhere app:

Links to apps:

iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1245330908
Google: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...esanywhere.goo
Roku: https://channelstore.roku.com/detail...ovies-anywhere

Anyone know how long newly purchased movies take to sync? Just bought a movie on Google Play and another on Amazon Video to see how long and none have come over yet.

The reason I think it’s a bug is because it’s actually streaming above normal HD resolution. The Lego Movie in iTunes HD is 1920x800, but the Apple TV 4K will stream it in 2228x928. So it’s in this weird place of above HD but not close to 4K

Some are like that. But others are not.

Lego Batman: 1486x618
Lego Move: 1484x618
CHiPs: 1920x1080
The Accountant: 1920x800
Miss Peregrine: 1920x1038
Life of Pi: 1958x1058

EDIT: Ok I can get The Lego Movie to get to that higher 2228x928. It still shows HD when swiping down to get info.

The fact that we’re even getting drastically different resolutions leads me to believe even further that it’s a bug

I can get the Lego Batman up to 1918x798.

These are all maxing at 15Mbps still, whereas the real 4K ones hit 30Mbps no problem.

A quick guide to getting this working in the UK (and probably other non-US areas). I only have films in US iTunes and UltraViolet - none in Amazon or Google Play so I can't comment on those. Hope this helps!

You will need: A US iTunes account (see here) and a VPN or location selection service (I recommend TunnelBear - very easy to use and you get 500 MB free each month which is more than enough to set this up)

On a computer
  • Open iTunes and ensure you are logged in to your US iTunes account
  • launch your VPN/location service to make it look like you are in the US
  • If you have UV titles (and don't have a VUDU account) go to www.vudu.com and create an account. Then link this account to your UV account to enable your UV titles to show up in VUDU
  • Go to www.moviesanywhere.com and create an account - if you already have a Disney Movies Anywhere account I suggest you use the same e-mail address and the DMA account will be connected automatically (don't worry, you still get your free films)
  • Connect your VUDU account to the MA account (it will take you to the VUDU site to confirm)
  • Connect your iTunes account to the MA account (it will open iTunes to confirm - this is why you needed to be logged in to your US account in step 1)
  • Your libraries will now merge - for me this took <5 minutes for 60-70 films - you should also find the free 5 films adde to your account if you linked two or more services to Movies Anywhere
If you want access on iPhone, iPad or Apple TV
  • Ensure you are logged into the App/iTunes Store using your US account details (the option above 'aeroplane mode' in Settings on iPhone/iPad and Accounts in Settings on the Apple TV
  • Open the App store and download the Movies Anywhere App (there is no geolocation requirement so no need for a VPN on your device)
  • Once the App is installed open it - a code will be displayed on the screen (there is no geolocation requirement for running the app, but you will need your VPN/location service to link it to your account in the next step)
  • Go to www.moviesanywhere.com/link and follow the instructions (you should still be connected to your VPN/location service)
  • Once the code has been entered, the App should move forward to your library
  • You can now disconnect your VPN/location service
Using the Apple TV as an example - the Movies app should now have iTunes versions (incl UHD HDR) of all your digital movies harvested from UV, iTunes (US) and DMA (and any other store you linked). If you need to set your App/iTunes account back to your UK one (e.g. iPhone or iPad) then the Movies app will contain any UK account films you have bought and the Movies Anywhere app will contain all you UV and US-bought iTunes films (probably not UHD/HDR though - I don't have the quipment to check). The Movies Anywhere app does not need any geolocation trickery once linked. I am in the UK and am quite happily accessing my films via both the Movies App (US iTunes account signed in) and the Movies Anywhere app on my AppleTV 4.
